Odd, beautiful, problematic, and romantic are just a few of the adjectives I can conjure up to describe George Miller’s curious new movie about a djinn, desire, and the power of story, THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING. In theaters tomorrow- my review: https://bit.ly/3dZrJAI

I was mixed on BODIES BODIES BODIES, a satire on Gen-Z shallowness wrapped up in a whodunnit, frequently funny and wild but perhaps not as biting as it could have been. But it also has Lee Pace popping champagne with a machete so, balance. My review: https://bit.ly/3bZ7zGd

This weekend, I was so excited to watch PREY, and then I realized: I've never seen a Predator movie! So I watched PREDATOR and then watched PREY and loved both. Wish I could've seen it in a theater. Amber Midthunder is a capital S Star. Read my review here.

I either enjoyed or hated BULLET TRAIN depending on which characters were on screen. But I mostly kinda liked it despite its obvious faults- what can I say, I think train movies are neat! Read my review here.

MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON is the cinematic equivalent of the 🥺 emoji and one of the most life-affirming films I've seen recently, with loveable characters and innovative stop-motion animation. Read my review here.

WHAT is going on and WHY is it so scary? Rebecca Hall once more proves she's better than us all in RESURRECTION, a solid thriller about a toxic relationship that goes in an unexpectedly weird direction. In theaters this Friday and VOD next week. Read my revew here.

Jordan Peele's third feature is also his messiest, but I like it the more I think about it. NOPE is sendup of alien movies that isn't so much about the fear of being watched as it is about those who thrive on it. Now playing in theaters- read my review here.

Out of all the bad movies that have already been made about covid, few have been as awkward and downright insensitive as ALONE TOGETHER, a lockdown rom-com which Katie Holmes writes, directs, and stars in. In theaters Friday, and VOD next week. My review: https://bit.ly/3yPn8YE

Chloé Mazlo's SKIES OF LEBANON is one of my favorite movies I've watched this year, a vibrant love story and a searing exploration of how conflict can tear that love apart. Perfectly melds animation w/live action too. Opens in NYC this Friday- read my review here.

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER presents some interesting concepts- shaken faith, absent gods, rediscovering love- but they are overwhelmed by a film that is otherwise messy, ugly, and confused, trying too hard to replicate the success of its predecessor. Now playing in theaters- read my review here.

Baz Luhrmann’s ELVIS is a delirious spectacle, and Austin Butler came close to fooling me with his spot-on portrayal of the King. But the film depicts Elvis as more of a vibe than a person. Read my review here.

Turns out when you take a character who has a conflict over not being a real person and make him a real person, he's...pretty boring. That's one of my problems with LIGHTYEAR, a film that hits its emotional high early but fast becomes a slog. Read my review here.

Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman’s Afrofuturist musical NEPTUNE FROST is both a powerful rallying cry and a mesmerizing testament to the boundlessness of the creators’ imagination. I wrote a tiny bit about it as it begins to expand to more theaters: https://bit.ly/3O5lxEj

I think I set my expectations for JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION so low it actually managed to exceed them, but any movie that makes Laura Dern's Ellie Sattler utter the phrase "slid into my DMs" is automatically cursed. Read my review here.

"Top Gun: Maverick” is the rare legacy sequel that actually works, nicely bridging the old and new and building its stunning, cheer-worthy action scenes on a strong emotional foundation. Read my review here.

CRIMES OF THE FUTURE is body horror king David Cronenberg’s first movie in a good minute, and while it’s as squirm-inducing as you’d expect, it’s vision of the future is also one of his strangest, funniest- and saddest. Read my review here.

In a broad sense, Chloe Okuno’s feature directorial debut WATCHER is a fairly standard voyeurism tale, but she and star Maika Monroe are doing some interesting work here that makes it compelling, dread-filled viewing. In theaters Friday- my review: https://bit.ly/3wPis3S
