Readerly Exploration
Due date: March 9th 2021
Title: Reading comprehension: Reader Factors
Big take aways:
A big take away that I have from this was the definition of comprehension. The definition is:
"A creative, multifaceted thinking process in which students engage with the text"
I did not think of comprehension as a creative way. I thought that it was a way that was creative. I thought it was more of a uniform term!
Nugget:
My nugget for this article is the triple-entry journal that Ms. Ali uses in her classroom. I think that it is such a great way for the students to keep all of their thoughts on the same page. The triple-entry journal has three columns for the students to use. The first column is them taking a quote or something that happened in the text. The second column is for them to explain their thinking. The third column is for the students to identify the strategy that they used to explain their thinking.
Readerly Exploration:
The task that I picked was making a t-chart. the first thing I did when engaging in this task was construct my chart and label it struggles and successes. the next thing I did was read the article and anything that I was struggling to understand or had me asking a question, I wrote that down as a struggle and anything that I completely understood or have practiced before I put them in the successes. The next thing I did was connect with classmate and compared my successes and struggles with them. Most of them were pretty similar. Somethings that I thought were challenging was finding things that I struggled to understand. it felt that I needed to have a struggle when reading this article, but I did not have many! The easy part was being able to understand what the author was saying about comprehension and the different strategies that were mentioned. Engaging in this readerly exploration allowed me to better understand the article because now that I have them written down, I can come back to those notes in the future. by taking these notes it will allow me to help my students who do struggle with comprehension. Another difficulty I had with this readerly exploration was making a concept map. I did not understand how to make it with my struggles because I did not have many! My drawing is a person in the middle with the title of comprehension and it has bubbles all around the person with the different strategies that I learned throughout the reading.

Readerly Exploration #1
Due Date: February 8th 2021
Titles: The Reading and Writing Processes Tompkins CH.2 and Developing Fluent Readers Tompkins CH. 6
Ch 2: The reading process was a big take away for me. No one has ever shown me that or have i ever learned about it. The reading process is pre-reading, reading, responding, exploring and applying.
Ch 6: I know we talk about it a lot in class but one big take away for me is Reading Fluency. Reading Fluency i was thought was just being able to read the words and understand their meaning. This entails more than that. It entails automaticity, speed and prosody.
Nuggets:
CH 2: One big nugget from chapter 2 would definitely be the information about the Dysfluent students. This entailed that by their 4th grade year they are passing the word by word reading and being able to read more. Some of those readers almost forget how to read and this can translate over to their writing and cause them to have a delay of writing.
CH 6: A nugget in this chapter is the Lexile Framework. It is a process where they use this system to match books with readers levels of readings. They use word formality and sentence complexity to help determine what the level of difficulty that they give their students.
I chose to “read texts deeply in order to interpret, critique, and analyze the various layers of meaning a text might offer a reader”. I have read about Gail Tompkins and there is not much about her on the web. What I did learn was that she was a college professor in California. She worked with Kindergarten- Eighth grade teachers. There is also a letter in the beginning that tells us about her. Throughout the chapters, I could not help but notice the amount of detail within them. After reading her letter, she says, “I try to anticipate the questions you might ask and provide that information so that you'll become an effective teacher”. The amount of detail that she puts into each chapter leaves me with all of my answers. In doing this exploration, I first said, “wow this is a lot of reading” but now I know why. She is very thorough with her information. The second thing I did was read her letter, which answered my question on why is there so many pages in each chapter. I loved reading these chapters because I was able to gain more insight on how to properly make my students better readers and betters writers.
