Atonement
Dolios broke the surface of the water with choked gasps as he struggled to stay afloat for a second. Between the sharp coldness of the water and holding his breath for so long, he was disoriented for just a moment.  His body ached from the attacks of the golems, but he pushed himself to swim. Desperately looking around for land, he swam towards the shore once he saw it was a few feet away from him. With each stroke, his arms and legs felt like lead, but he kept trying.  A sigh of relief slipped his lips when he felt his boots touch rocks as he kept pushing himself onto the shore. With his legs giving out from underneath him, he began to crawl onto the muddy shore.  Pressing his face against the cold moss and mud while he lay there.
“By the Gods, why was the underground tunnel so long?” he said between gasps. Upon eavesdropping on the conversation with Lord Ephiriem and his mother, he found that she was hiding a time shard. An object that he believed to be nothing but a myth alone. But wasn’t until recently that he found that Keziah stored the fragment in a secure elvan chamber underground. Therefore, she was desperate to get the band that Sammael placed on her finger removed. Because if that band wasn’t removed, she couldn’t protect the time shard fully away from the dark elf or Sammael. But it wasn’t as if she could do much anyway with a child on the way she was having in secret. Having the shard fall into the grasp of Sammael would not only dislodge her as head sorceress involved with the great vampire family but allow distrust to grow with allies. Dolios aimed to fix this for his mother even if she didn’t ask for help, he would do it for her. His goal was to use the time shard by going back in time to the fae village that was attacked, pulling his mother out of there before she allowed herself to be captured. This would prevent her from providing information about the time shards during her captivity.
That was the plan when he found the obscure cavern near the forests of orcs’ allies, and still, the plan when he realized that his mother designed the room to where only she could touch the shard without activating the stone golems that guard the caverns. Once he gathered the time shard, the exit was sealed off and every golem in that cavern aimed to pummel him.  And if he managed to golems long enough, the old elven statues in that cavern were suited with binding spells.  Dolios did not escape the room unscathed, merely dodging the wide brute swings and charges from the golem as best he could. With the main exit sealed, he found the bridge that led to the entrance did have an opening of water. With water pooling in the cavern, there had to be another opening that led to another room or bigger body of water. It was either this way or staying and being smashed to death by golems.  The light from the elven cavern disappeared, Dolios swam in darkness for a few minutes until he saw light above him. Using that final kick to push to the surface.  He believed that he was further in orc territory but when Dolios finally looked up. Something felt off to him which caused him to stand slowly. He reached into the folds of his jacket, to touch the golden elven vial that held the crystal. The orcs were very good about catching foreigners on their lands, so when he wasn’t greeted with a spear to his face he was surprised.
The young vampire moved forward into the grass plains glancing back at the body of water he came from. The water was certainly a lake that had a creek feeding in it, leading further into the forest.  Usually, life gathered around water so if he kept following the creek, then surely, he could figure out just where he was at now. But upon not seeing any life instead of some type of pavement and the creek being built underneath it. Dolios stopped as he looked around once more.  He almost walked onto the pavement until he saw something red but massive moving towards him with red and blue lights while honking a very loud horn. Cringing some, he stayed out of its way but watched until it sped down the road out of sight.  Deciding to follow it but staying off the pavement, he ran through the woodlands easily catching up to the loud object. It was only until a large clearing came up and he saw the loud object pull up to a building that was on fire that he stopped.
He didn’t go near the group of people who were gathered in the front of the building, though he could hear someone shouting. Someone pleading, that there was still someone trapped in there and they needed help. Dolios saw the man behind held back to be prevented from running back into the burning building.  Even as he stood a few feet away from the building, the heat from the fire radiated to him. The smoke was burning his eyes and yet he wanted to look to see if he could find a survivor. This wasn’t his business but perhaps the helping nature of Daffryd and Eldrian were rubbing off on him.  Finding a broken window on the side of the building, he crept in and stayed low trying to see through the smoke.  The fire had blocked most rooms off and, in the corridor, the smoke was thicker than in the room he came from.
Dolios almost turned back around until he felt it, that faint pull of life to his senses from the thickness of the smoke. That faint smell of blood that came putting his vampiric senses into overdrive. With a spell uttered, he casted an ice spell to rid the doorway of the fire and along with parts of the room. Temporary aid to get him to the wounded person that was in this grand one trapped. In the center of the room was a crumpled body on their side, trying to crawl away from the fires for safety. But with the amount of blood and just how thick the fires were, he would have doubted this person would have made it to safety anyway. With one bloody hand cradling their wound another reached for Dolios.
“Help me.” He heard the soft voice say to him while reaching for him.
“Please.”
The mortal gurgled out before lying face down for they were struggling to move now and stay awake. Familiarity filled Dolios, he didn’t know if it was their face or their blood, but he acted quickly. Gathering the fragile mortal into his arms just as he heard the voices approaching. When the firefighters opened the entrance to the building, the heat among the fires increased and what ice spells he conjured melted quickly. He made a move to dash out of the grand room when debris that was on fire collapsed in the doorway he came.
“I think I see someone in there!” A voice yelled from the doorway that was now blocked. Dolios glanced back at them before looking to the mortal.
“Hold on,” He muttered while casting another spell to create a brief rip to pass through.
A loud crackle rippled through the room, in the portal the forest area where Dolios arrived earlier could be seen.  The vacuum-like pull of the portal slowly pulled him and the mortal in gently. With another loud pop sound, the portal was gone just as the firefighters cleared the debris from the doorway.  Dolios held onto the mortal as tightly as he could, but the landing was hard against his back for he made contact with some sort of metal instead of grassy plains. The area smelled of rotten food and other items he dared not think about. A dark alley of sorts where people dumped unwanted things like trash from what he gathered.
“I am sorry. I aimed for a clearing of fields of the sort, but I am not sure what is going on. -“Dolios growled while he straightened before jogging out of the alleyway. Buildings of all different designs could be seen, along with smaller entrapments similar to the ones at the building that was on fire.  People that walked the streets veered out of their way, seemingly because Dolios was covered in mud and reeked of smoke. Holding someone who was halfway conscious while covered in blood did not help the matter. No one wanted to listen to him or give him any type of attention. Frustrated, Dolios ran into the nearest building, seemingly bumping into another mortal on their way out.
“Excuse me, if you please help me. This person is bleeding and I need help.”
Sammy gave a surprised look before fury, took over her features seeing Kari being held by a stranger.  Luckily there was no one in the café anymore an with the blinds down, she locked the door before addressing Dolios to put Kari down on the nearby plush booth. “What happened to Kari? And who are you and where is Angelo? I am calling the cops.” she demanded. Dolios head was spinning, he has heard that name before and usually, another descendant wasn’t far behind him. “I am familiar with that name, but I don’t know what he looks like. But please, these questions are wasting my time and this mortal’s. I do not know what cops are but please-! “He said shaking his head. Dolios kneeled by the mortal, pulling his shirt up to reveal the gaping hole in his stomach that perhaps showing the woman would get her to listen.
“I can heal this but you will need to hold him and maybe have bandages to keep it clean,” Dolios said after a moment.
Sammy had stilled herself with the phone in her hand but said nothing while she looked to Dolios. The young male was dressed weirdly and caring for a beloved friend of hers, she sighed softly knowing the choice she made now could be a disaster.  “If there is any funny business, I will call them next but if we can stop the bleeding then that can help until medics come,” Sammy said softly.
Dolios nodded, “More healers then? Fine,” he said while reaching into his pocket to pull out a vial filled with red contents. Pouring the vial directly on the wound caused the area to bubble immediately, Dolios placed his hand over the wound while muttering incantation to speed up the healing of the wound. Sammy flinched when hearing Kari whimper, the color that was once drained from his face was restored. The extraction of the bullet caused Kari to squirm and cry underneath Dolios grasp, which as just the young boy who was getting ready to ask for Sammy’s help. Slender hands came reaching to grab hold of Kari’s hands while she studied Dolios.  As each minute ticked by, Kari showed discomfort from the extraction of the bullet by Dolios. The power within him vibrated each time Kari cried out.  Objects on the counter began to lunge forward falling to the ground and shattering, tables that usually needed two people to just move were scooting forward. Spider cracks began to form in the windows, each time Kari screamed the cracks spread more and more on the windows.
“Calm them! I am almost done.” Dolios ordered.
Sammy moved to touch Kari’s face, pushing the damp strands out of his face.  The cries were reduced to whimpers when Sammy spoke to Kari while Dolios still worked to extract the foreign metal and close the wound as best he could.  Once he felt the metal touch his palm, he placed the bloody bullet on the table before casting a heat spell to sear the wound close. A choked sob escaped Kari’s lips as he shook from the process until he fainted.
“I am done. “Dolios said breathlessly.
“Forgive me for not numbing this area but I don’t have much with me.  But he will not die from his wound. He just needs rest and a good bandage now.” he said softly.
Though Dolios hands remained stained with blood, the large wound had closed up the area was still red and bruised though the wound had closed into a faint line.  Sammy gasped softly, her lips parted as tried to get out wave of questions she held for the boy.
“Who? Or what are you?”
“I am Dolios Mortiem son of the great sorceress Keziah.”
