The way I have come to describe it is that Colour photography engages the viewer, whereas Black and White releases the viewer.
Colour is glorious. It is highly stimulating and grabs all our attention. The brain is fully engaged with it’s enticement and we can almost taste and smell the image. We are transported into the photograph and we are there.
Whereas B&W does not do that. We can step back and are released from the grip of stimulation. It allows a quiet appreciation for shape, light and shadow, something we do not objectively discern in colour. We have to use our imagination more and emotions in a different way. We see with a different perspective.
But like everything, there is a need for balance; ying and yang, warmth and cool, sweet and savoury. We are fortunate to be able to experience both.

This was my first day of practicing photography. Late september, early sunday morning, quiet foggy day in my small town. This eldetly couple came out of nowhere, walking at a fast pace, him with a lovely handcrafted tobacco pipe. Nikon 50mm lens.
I wanted them leaving the frame and thus leaving red made sense (danger?). Plus I love B&W but I want to blur the line between B&W versus color.
