one weird thing about ninninger is that kinji is like the best character, of course, but his focus episodes always try to push the idea that his issue is being indecisive when that's like, never the root cause of things. its usually more bc he overthinks things & has low self confidence & trust issues/doesnt trust his friends to help & not to turn their backs on him. anyway like half of his problems & issues episodes would be solved if grandpa didnt take out his issues on young adults who look up to him

New Ryusoulger scans. Introducing Gold

I seriously want to write Ryusoulger/Zyuranger crossover fic where it turns out the Ryusoulgers came from the same civilization as the Zyurangers, they just kept progressing in hiding while the Zyuranger heroes were in suspended animation.  The Zyurangers never knew the dinosaurs survived for millions of more years or that their people still exist until the Ryusoulgers make themselves known in the world.

We all know the Zyurangers were the Princes and Princess of Tribes that existed millions of years ago.  I’d like to think the Ryusoulgers are the descendants of the knights that served those Tribes.  They just found a different enemy to fight after the fall of Bandora and the banishment of Dai Satan.

I don’t write a lot of fic but this gives me so many ideas!

Things I Enjoyed About The Least-Successful Super Sentai Series In 15 Years

Shuriken Sentai Ninninger wrapped up last week and looks to be the worst-earning Super Sentai series in almost 15 years. That’s a drop of over two billion yen earned compared to last year’s ToQger, which itself was a two billion drop from the year before that. (Note that this chart includes the projected spike from the first month and a half of the next season, Zyuohger.)

So what happened? Ninninger was supposed to be a softball, a fallback. Trains, ninjas and dinosaurs are three proven commodities in Japan, and Ninninger went all-in on Japanese culture. I’ve seen people call it boring, or accuse the show of making its Red Ranger too special, or (conversely) argue that Red was too bland. Critics who were vocal in their dislike for the show for its entire run are taking this as proof they were right all along, though few will admit that it’s too easy to dismiss something when you’re not that interested to begin with.

The most convincing argument I’ve seen for the poor toy sales has nothing to do with character or story: namely, the toyline was ill-conceived. There is one thing a shuriken is designed to do- to be thrown- and you can’t even do that with the toys because they are chunky and have electronics in them. Without that, all you have are a bunch of boring discs that don’t really do anything on their own, and a sword with a whole three buttons. It’s a chicken-and-egg situation: the show promotes toys, the toys reinforce interest in the show through pretend play. Baron from Kamen Rider Gaim was the most popular “secondary” Kamen Rider in years, and his toy-set came bundled as standard with the main character’s toy.

The thing is, I enjoyed Ninninger. It’s hard to argue that it wasn’t a flop in a financial sense, but I was still thoroughly entertained despite that. Rather than try to make a cohesive argument as to why I feel this way despite its flaws, or convince you otherwise if you really hated it, here’s a big list of things I either enjoyed or think Ninninger did really well. It’s not an exhaustive list of every single little thing, but the main ones that came to mind while writing this article (and are relatively non-spoilery).

Den-O rewatch, episode one! in this episode: a very unlucky boy gets stuck in a tree, is given coffee by a woman in a magic train, accidentally makes a contract with a demon by riding his bike over it, and is unwillingly conscripted into becoming a time-traveling superhero. it’s a very action-packed 23 minutes!

ugggh there’s so much I wanted to draw for this episode, I couldn’t decide. it’s a solid opening that does a great job of immediately establishing the characters with all these wonderful moments of interaction, and it’s all so good! Ryoutarou is somehow even more pathetically adorable than I remember, which I didn’t think was possible. (that poor boy, just…just let him be happy for once.) I’m definitely gonna have to draw more for this episode, something with Hana at least! I have…a lot of feelings about Hana.

I’ll try not to always be tl;dr but I’m excited to get the ball rolling, and this episode gave me lots of happy nostalgic feelings. C: it’s nice to immediately start off remembering why I loved this ridiculous show in the first place.

also: Ryoutarou’s first fight was so appropriately dorky that it was kind of incredible??
