Superhero au! Fic snippet
Happy holidays everyone! As decided, here’s a teaser for the superhero au. I decided to go with a part of a Snow and Merlin scene (feat Regina and Snows dad), which is roughy 1500 words. This one’s from chapter 2. Then as a small bonus at the end I added a roughly 400 words of Arthur and Edda (Edthur? Artda?) stuff from chapter 3, because I can’t stop myself. Please remember that this in mostly unedited (so there is a likelyhood of weird wording and grammar mistakes) and will be subject to change.
Here’s to hoping I’ll actually finish this fic next year.
Tw! Coma (Snows dad being in one)
~~~~~~
“We’re here,” Merlin announced as he pulled in the car into the parking lot outside of the hospital.
They walked through the large sliding doors (Merlin making a small wave with his hands with an “open sesame!” as they did, which despite everything Snow could not help finding a little bit cute), and took the elevator up to the ward where her father was resting.
“Do you want me to wait outside when we get there?” Merlin asked, leaning against the wall of the elevator.
“What do you mean?”
“It’s a pretty private situation is it not?” He answered, for the first time in a while locking eyes with her, “I wouldn’t want to butt in on that.” He paused for a moment, glancing away before once more meeting her eyes, “unless you’d like company that is.” He shot her a smile, before shaking his head and holding up his hands, “still, it’s all up to you.”
Honestly? Part of her wouldn’t mind to have him in there with him, part of her wanted to tell him about her worries about his health, tell him about what ha great man he really was despite what Regina was now doing with his companies. She missed talking to, well, the both of them. Really talking to them. Still though…
“I think I want some privacy this time,” she said, and then despite her better judgement added “maybe next time.”
Once more his cheeks flushed and his eyes flashed with that frustrating confusion, but as the elevator pinged and the doors opened he seemed to get a grip over himself and shot her a flirty smile.
“As you wish,” he gestured her out of the elevator, “if something happens, shout for me and I’ll be there in a flash.”
“I will,” she could not help but return the smile, and nodded at him as she walked up to the room her father rested in and walked inside.
Once more his cheeks flushed and his eyes flashed with that frustrating confusion, but as the elevator pinged and the doors opened he seemed to get a grip over himself and shot her a flirty smile.
The room was set up for multiple patients, each bed separated by large dark blue curtains, but was currently only housing her father who was resting furthest back by the window. She’d asked for that spot specifically, even if she had to walk farther to reach him, because she’d hoped the first thing he’d see waking up would be the beautiful view into the small but well cared for hospital garden. Well, okay, most of all she hoped she’d be there to greet him when he came back, but she could not put her entire life on pause to be with him every waking moment to ensure that, she had to be realistic. It was hard though, after mom died he was all she had, and the fact that she was not able to house him with her like they’d been able to do with mom hurt.
She steadied herself halfway though the room, taking a deep breath.
“You’re doing your best, and that’s all everyone can ask of you.” She could hear his voice echoing though her head, and sure, that had been him trying to help her through her math homework, but it still helped ease her mind a little bit and with a new wind she begun walking again.
“Hey, dad how-“ she froze in her track as she passed the final curtain, and saw that she and her dad wasn’t as alone in the room as she’d thought.
Because leaning over her dad, with a hand cradling his cheek, was Regina.
“Oh, it’s you Snow.” Regina said calmly, “I wasn’t sure if you were going to come by today as well, but good. I need you to tell whoever is in charge of this place to not place him in such a tucked away part of the hospital, was nearly impossible to find him.” She shook her head, “why isn’t he placed in his own room anyway? The last hospital had him in such a nice room, I really can’t see what you like with this place if this is the treatment he gets.”
“What are you doing here?” Her mouth almost felt dry as she talked, her heart beating fast, but she tried to square her shoulders as she took a step closer to to her.
“Come on Snow,” Regina sighed exasperatedly, Snow suspected that the only reason she wasn’t smoking a cigarette was because of the hospitals no smoking rule (then again, she was beginning to suspect Regina wasn’t one for following rules)“He’s still my husband. Just because you’ve decided to get a lawyer and a whole team of heroes involved doesn’t mean I’m just going to stop visiting him.”
“You’re the one’s who’s breaking the law,” Snow replied, forcing her voice to be as cold and calm as possible and holding back the other accusations she had in the back of her mind.
“Bah, breaking the law,” Regina waved her hand at Snow, “don’t be so dramatic, we haven’t even gone before the jury yet. Besides,” she added leaning back into the plastic chair beside the bed squinting her eyes at Snow “don’t act as if you’re innocent here.”
“What are you talking about?”
Regina took one more moment to regard Mr White, before standing up to properly face Snow, looking down at her with an aura of pure motherly disappointment.
“You are the one who contacted the hero’s, right?” She huffed sardonically, “you can’t expect me to not think that there might be a chance you also got that, that,” she made a vague gesture into the air “person, to break into the labs, finally giving your little hero’s the perfect excuse to go in and raid the place.” She took a step closer to Snow, and it took all of her will not to take a step away from her. She practically radiated malice.
“Who knows,” Regina said with a sense of false levity, “maybe your little friend planted some fun evidence for your little heroes to pick up.”
“I-“ Snow began, a bit shaken by the accusation, as if she’d wanted that horrid person to break in and put all of her co-workers in danger. “No! I don’t even know who they are!” She looked up at Regina with as much defiance as she could muster.
“Hmm,” Regina pursed her lips a little bit, “I guess we’ll just have to see in court I suppose, looks like your guard dog is here.”
As if right on cue Merlin rushed though the door.
“Snow what’s- you!” He rushed up to them and slid in between Regina and Snow, glaring up at the older woman, one of his arms outstretched as if shielding Snow. “Just what are you doing here?”
“Oh god forbid a woman visit her husband!” Regina threw her hands up in exasperation.
“I though we made it clear that you aren’t supposed to involve yourself with Snow or her father during the trial,” Merlin shot back.
“Or you’ll what? Throw another lawsuit my way? Please.”she rubbed the bridge of her nose, as she begun walking past the two of them “I was right not to want your group involved before, look at this mess you’ve made, really,” she made eye contain with Snow “what would your father think if he was here right now? Getting people in trouble, first people in his own company and now the people who gave you work after you discarded his company to the wayside” She shook her head disapprovingly and reached for the door handle “we certainly won’t know for a while if this keeps up.”
“Is that a threat?” Snow saw Merlins fingers twitch just a little bit.
Regina just shot the two of them a sardonic smile.
“Oh, you would think that wouldn’t you.” She opened the door and left with a short regal wave “I’ll see you in court.”
The sound of the door closing seemed to echo across the walls of the room.
Snow watched the door for what felt like a full minute, before rushing up to her fathers side to check if he was okay. Despite everything she’d been unable to confirm that Regina had something to do with her fathers condition, but that didn’t ease her worry. Thankfully nothing seemed amiss, though at the same time it seemed like nothing had changed since she’d last seen him. He looked almost like a corpse with how still he seemed to be, it had been only thanks to the medical professionals that they’d been able to see that he was still, despite everything, alive.
His hand was limp in hers. She tried not to think about it as she listened to the beeping of the heart monitor.
A warm hand touched her shoulder.
“Do, do you want me to go to the other side of the room?” Merlin asked, his voice gentle.
She considered it. Considered the hand on her shoulder.
Then she gestured him to the chair on the other side of the bed.
She appreciated the thought, but after that run in, she vastly preferred him behind close at hand.
———
“Is there a mirror in the sun visor?” Doctor Andersdotter asked abruptly, pulling him out of his thoughts as they stopped by a red light.
“Of course, what car doesn’t have that?” He asked sparing a glance over at her as she pushed the visor down, and saw the white fabric around her neck. For a moment he thought it was some shawl, but as he turned his head slightly he realised it was a brown cravat.
The light switched to green before he got the time to look at it any closer, forcing his gaze back to the road.
“…skit.” She grumbled to herself.
“Something wrong?”
“Forgot to pack the cravat pin,” she sighed, “right when I thought I would get a chance to use it too, figures.”
“I should have a tie pin somewhere in the glove compartment, if you think that would work?” Arthur suggested.
“Aren’t those usually more hair pin shaped?” She wondered, yet he still heard the sound of the glove compartment opening, “why do you keep a tie pin in the glove box?”
“Dunno, just ended up there one day.” he shrugged, slowing down as they found themselves in front of yet another red light, a sign that they where reaching the central part of the city. “Don’t really use them so much myself. Jack got me it for my birthday a few years ago.”
Doctor Andersdotter suddenly let out a sharp bark of laughter.
“Hah, yeah I can see why he got you this. Fit’s your whole theme doesn’t it.”
He glanced over at her and saw her grinning at him, dangling the little sword shaped pin in her hand. The huff of laughter came out of him before he got a chance to think about it.
“Yeah, suppose so,” he turned his eyes back to the road, just catching the light shift to green, “don’t really wear ties that often though.”
“A shame,” The doctor hummed, “the blue details matches your eyes pretty well.” She said simply, and after a beat of silence continued with a flat but slightly apologetic tone. “Don’t think it would work for me though, blue is not really my colour.”
The glove compartment closed with a click and they both fell into silence once more, Arthur was just about start a new conversation, but Doctor Andersdotter was quicker then him.
“Oh, thanks for offering though.”
“Eh, no problem doc.”
This is one of the reasons why I love this world
Has so much potential
remember when i said i think about fairytale island a lot? well, i still do, and i'd love to hear some opinions on a few ideas i have.
on fairytale island, there are two kinds of beings: humans and monsters. "monster" is basically an umbrella term for all the non-human creatures on the island, most of whom find the term very insulting.
witches land somewhere in the middle of this line; they're not human but they don't really blend in with monsters, either. however, i like to think that monsters can tell the difference between a human and a witch (or any non-human creature that looks like a human). because of this, witches are accepted in monster communities. combine this with the fact that witches can use magic without any kind of conduit (notice how merlin couldn't use any magic without his talismans whereas regina is never seen with a wand, staff, talismans, or any sort of magical tool) and you have humans being distrustful and fearful of witches.
i also desperately want gods to exist in this world. i never watched the season, i had stopped watching bc the "frozen" arc was just too dumb, but a few greek gods plus hercules show up in "once upon a time". i just really need arthur and herc trying outdo each other... and then little red riding hood outdoing them both.
y'know. good ol' werewolf strength.
