H: we went to rhee's with yas to get our minds off everything which feels like a joke now.
H: went home earlier though
H: i don't know. nightrest is my home, got to watch my little brother grow up here, but at what point is enough enough? is it when half the town is dead?
H: i don't want anything to happen with yas or emine, don't think i'd be able to take another breath if something happens to them. or you... or anyone anymore.
H: we can't escape death, and people move on, but so many deaths in the spawn of what? three months?
K: I'm glad that you were left then.
K: I understand how you feel. My family has been in this town for generations. I don't know any other place to be home. It was hard enough leaving for college and starting anew, but to do it again? It's unthinkable.
K: At this point I'm ready to go get weapons for my own safety. I am not big on guns, but if it's the difference between my life and death. I'm willing to go for it.
K: It's been like 10 if I remember correctly. All so young. All whom I went to school with, or knew in one way or another. Monty for god's sake!

H: as alright and safe as anyone can be i guess
H: trying to wrap my head around it. wondering if we should be leaving nightrest before it's too late.
H: how are you?
K: Evacuate the entire town? I think the police need to learn to ask for help and get some FBI or even the state troopers involved cause they can't seem to get this shit under wraps.
K: Are you thinking about leaving?
K: I'm doing alright. Just angry mostly. I didn't show up til around the time the police got there. I didn't want to be too early to the party and whatever other dumb shit I was thinking about.
K: Were you there?

Kahlan felt like she was in a movie. Having been gone from this town for a decade to come back to murder scene after murder scene. It was overwhelming and she couldn’t help but feel anger. This was her home town. She had been born and raised within the zip codes of this small community and nothing had ever been this way. Why, or rather who was behind this? Who could hate this town to this extent that the residents lives mean nothing to them? These were all people she knew. People she had shared moments of laughter, and moment of sorrow with now gone. Their last moments on this planet plagued by the presence of this murderer.
“Why doesn’t anybody do anything!” She spoke in anger. The police had been nothing but useless with this killer from the jump. They had all of the crime scenes, they had phones, and bodies and yet nobody can figure out who’s behind this? How did it make any sense. “How many more people need to die for them to do their jobs.” She stopped walking noticing a male in front of her. “Are you alright?” She rushed on over, hoping that he hadn’t been attacked as well.

The red and blue lights of the police cars outside of Rhee's Bar and Grill cast a dim glow over the parking lot as Dae-eun stood numbly near the front of the restaurant. He'd felt from the moment he set foot in the building that the gathering was a bad idea, but it had promised joy, and that was something that was becoming ever harder to find in this town—evidenced by the events of that very night. Somehow, he hadn't expected it to get this bad. Five deaths—the words could barely process in his mind. Too many known faces, too many bright lights snuffed out all too quickly.
Brooks and Sita. Dae's hands shook as the names came flooding back to him once more; he'd just talked to the other man earlier that night. And Sita... He blinked a few times, hot tears falling onto the ground below as he shuddered. His car still sat on the curb nearby, and his heart panged at the reminder. With a shaky breath, he glanced away, eyes unfocused somewhere in the near distance.

Kahlan shrugged as she grabbed and pulled the plate of fries closer to her. "Sharing is caring." She quoted her childhood favorite dinosaur. "I didn't really thought that I missed this place up until I made the decision to move back." She said as she glanced around the diner. She barely remembered people's names, let alone think that she'd ever be back in Nightrest. "Do you ever think about leaving, and different out there could be? Not that you should, but you know."
"I tried to, but you kept me distracted!" She continued to take a couple that fell from his plate onto the table. "And I know because it has been so every time I've done it." A lie all together, but true enough because she knew she wouldn't actually order her own as she'd never finish them. That and her personal trainer would have a field day. "See! You're over here being selfish when you ain't even going to finish them." She stuck her tongue out at him again, "You big meanie!"

He laughed, ducking his head in embarrassment. "I don't have it on me right now—it's in my notebook back at the house—but another time, for sure," he promised, nodding. He swatted at her hand again, rolling his eyes as she successfully evaded the attack. "You didn't even order them, so how would you know?" He poked her arm, chuckling. "It's fine, I wasn't going to finish them anyway."

"Don't be modest with me, Pierce!" She knew well how much time and effort he put into his music, and she made sure to give him honest feedback whenever she did get the chance to read or listen to him, "When you get the chance, I would love to hear it. Or read it. Whatever makes you more comfortable." Laughing she stole three to four fries before pulling her hand away ignoring his swatting. "I forgot to order some." She whines sticking them into her mouth, "but yours definitely taste better than mine would have."
Pierce rolled his eyes, unable to wipe the grin from his face as he chuckled. With a shake of his head, he responded. "I think so?" he admitted, uncertain. "Feels weird to say that about my own music, but...this might be the one." Saying the words aloud felt like a weight lifted from his chest, and he sighed, glancing down to see her fingers in his fries. "Hey!" He smacked them lightly. "Get your own!"

“Oh nothing to me darling. I’m simply stating facts.” She spoke waving her right index finger before tapping his nose with it lightly. “I would apologize but then that might give you the idea that it’s ok.” Kahlan picked at his fried since she had forgotten to order any of her own. “Now tell me about this new song you’ve been writing? Is it as good as the last one?”
He rolled his eyes, a smile splitting his face. "What have nerds ever done to you? What's so bad about it, really?" he chuckled, shaking his head. "Besides, I never had that high school personality arc. Consider me 'fashionably late.'" Throwing a hand across his chest, he continued dramatically. "You wound me, woman. How dare you."

“I most certainly will not!” Kahlan said, turning back towards him and sticking her tongue in his direction. “That personality was meant to stay way back in high school. Some of us did some growing up.” She made herself sound so snarky while a wide smile adorned her face.

"Hey, don't judge me!" Pierce grinned, mock hurt crossing his features. "Sometimes being a nerd can come in handy, okay? Who knows when I might need to use that knowledge! Maybe even for you—you'd better apologize then."

lukaplan:
“Forget about you? Never,” Lu said, smiling widely as she opened the door so Kahlan could come in. “Sorry, I’m kind of multi-tasking today. Been sleeping over next door every night, so I haven’t had a chance to clean so I’m doing that now while the muffins are in the oven,” she said, wiping the back of her hand against her forehead before patting the back of the couch. “But I’m due for a well-deserved break anyway. I’d hug you but I’m all sweaty,” Lu said, crinkling her nose up. “Have a seat, have a seat. I think we have about…” she paused as she checked the clock on the wall. “Six more minutes until the muffins are done but anyway, what have you been up to lately? Tell me everything I missed and I mean everything.”
Grinning widely, Kahlan made her way into the home as if she had been going there for a lifetime. “Next door?” Her head tilted slightly and she turned to face her friend with a slight smirk. “Who lives next door?” She tried very hard to think back but after ten years she was lucky enough to remember her own parents address let alone someone else. “I mean,” Kahlan grabbed the first stool near her and sat, “There’s not really much to tell really. College was amazing out of this town. Met some really cool people, but I’m satisfied with my exploration. I don’t think I really found a place to call home, so I started to miss this forsaken place. Can you believe that?!”

josie: WHAT!? josie: i'm glad you found the cat and that your parents weren't there, but why'd you even go there now? josie: what if something happened to you???

jieunparks:
“No.” The fact that Kahlan had the nerve to even ask her that made the brunette want to laugh. Ten years and now she wanted to know how Jieun was? Please. She wasn’t in the mood for causalities nor did she feel like she was willing to tolerate a conversation that wasn’t what she sat down for. She wanted to hear Kahlan’s attempt at any apology. To laugh in her face by the end and walk away as if the woman was nothing to her. Which, at this moment, she truly wasn’t anything more than a rotten memory. Jieun listened, blank eyes staring at the other while her arms remained crossed over her chest — refusing to allow a single emotion to seep through any of her cracks. Kahlan didn’t deserve it and she damn sure wasn’t going to get the opportunity to think there was any left to give. None aside from the rage that coursed through Jieun’s blood. “You gave me nothing while we were together. Just a decent fuck and a dirty little secret,” A single brow now perking up, “And that’s all your sorry about? Hurting my feelings?”
Kahlan’s heart ached. It throbbed, and churned in a way that she hadn’t thought possible. She knew she had a lot to work on, knew that it had taken her what most would consider an abnormal amount of time to really find herself and the courage to go up against what her parents believed. Yet, all the words that came out of Jieun’s mouth made her wonder whether she had really been that bad of a person. Had wanting to please her parents made her such a pariah in the other’s eyes? “I let you know from the beginning that I was not out of the closet Jieun. I never lied to you about anything regarding my feelings and how things would be with me.” She had been the first real relationship that Kahlan had with a female, and truly Jieun had been the first person that Kahlan had loved. “I will not apologize for having been clear with you from the jump, and I don’t believe that those four years that you were with me were all that miserable. I understand you wanted publicity and we never got to that point, but I was a child and I was scared. I didn’t have the social awakening that you did, nor the mental capacity to come out to the world and accept the outcome.” She honestly didn’t know what else the other wanted her to apologize for. What else had she done other than kept her a secret throughout their relationship. “I don’t know what else to say.”

her smile quickly widens, thrilled to see her friend after so many years, though there’s a small part of her that wishes kahlan had stayed gone. if she had, at least she’d be able to tell herself that the elder was safe. josie happily returns the hug, offering a soft chuckle in her ear, ❝ you mean on top of everything else? i’m not sure i wanna know—just kidding! i’m me, of course i do. ❞ the youngest allows herself to soften at the comment, her hand refusing to drop from kahlan entirely, as if she’d disappear if josie wasn’t holding on. ❝ nah, i don’t think you missed me nearly as much as i missed you, and don’t fight me on that. you know i’ll win. ❞ hands eventually release so she can use them to express herself, ❝ now seriously… tell me everything! every. minute. detail. ❞
