thinking about hyouka and how she really doesn’t give the impression that she knows how to do much aside from fight, nor that she’d be very good at handling civilians. her excitement around other slayers and dedication to her swordsmanship is very much in the forefront when she’s home/at the butterfly mansion, which is mostly bc it’s the one place she can just be :’ )) a teenager :’ )) she tends to be a lot less “ professional ” bc for the most part, it’s not necessary to keep a lid on her personality when she’s there.

but hyouka is surprisingly good at handling people, able to appeal/understand their feelings to an extent — she’s still unable to understand certain ways of thinking without explanation. but people who are afraid? upset kids? hyouka can handle them no problem.

her skill set also goes beyond flame breathing. she was a kakushi for a good while and a farmer before that, so basic first aid, sewing, cooking, and a plethora of other odd skills come relatively easy, like riding a bike. overall, she’s much more capable than people may initially give her credit for.

she watches him squirm ( literally ), stumbling through his words in the same manner hyouka once did when satsuki would catch her sneaking out of their shared room at night. he's really bad at this, she thinks with some pity in her eyes. even she, as bad as she is about believing people at face value, can tell he's uncomfortable, hiding something... but then he mentions only wanting somewhere to sleep, and hyouka softens.

oh. her shoulders relax, and her expression becomes less suspicious and more sympathetic. that makes a lot more sense than a high-level demon pretending to be some random, very conspicuous boy.

the slayer, now at ease, takes a few steps forward with new purpose and kinder eyes. " if you need somewhere to sleep, i can rent you a room. this place really isn't safe. " or rather, she can give him the room she's renting. she's unlikely to use it much, and she's perfectly fine sleeping under the stars if need be. he just really can't be here right now. " there's been sightings of a winged creature, and i've been finding feathers everywhere. you really should go. "

--- ah . ( don't scream ! don't scream ... !! ) he's no less tense in front of her , his back wriggling with hidden wings , her figure clear as day even in the deep dark of a moonlit night . the sudden appearance of a seemingly ordinary person in tandem with the obvious weapon at their side was only bad news for someone like him , but maybe --- somehow , he could make it out of this without needing to run for his life , or leaping right back into the painting behind him ?!

one finger lifts to point at the other --- ' i could ask the same about you ... ! ' he was sure this place was abandoned ! whatever story the dilapidated building might have once told had been cleaned up by the black bird and great phantom thief that had taken to nesting within it . he couldn't exactly call it his own , but it made for a good safehouse and gateway , didn't it ?! at least up until now !

' v-village ? ' right , the nearby village he's been stealing from . even if he's been snatching up a few necessities every once in a while , he still didn't think that someone would be sent out to investigate so soon . ' i , uh --- y-you ... have the wrong house --- ? there's nothing in here ... ! ' but him , really ! ' i just wanted a place to sleep --- ! '

he wants to eat his lunch in peace -- away from the other teen currently recovering at the butterfly mansion. yet kaigaku finds himself begrudgingly sat across from tanjiro while aoi and the other three girls ( he can't remember their names and doesn't care to ) prepare food for the slayers too ill to leave their rooms. he feels incredibly awkward and undoubtedly annoyed to be there and tries to keep his eyes on his meal; he'll be damned before he makes conversation with someone that weakling calls friend. the only reason he's here is because the insect hashira, despite being smaller than him, is surprisingly... persuasive.

kaigaku chances a glance at tanjiro only to meet his eyes. shit. he scowls.

" are you alright to continue, shinazugawa? " the flame hashira breathes just as heavily as his comrade but still stands at the ready. it is only because sanemi pauses after they break apart that kyojuro asks, wondering if he's growing tired. after all, they have been at it for about an hour now. the blonde's smile is kind as he suggests, " we can take a break if you want! "

blood drips down kaigaku's temple, falling against the black of his uniform as his opponent turns to ash in front of him. he believes it's just a minor wound, yet his head spins as he whirls around. it's fine. he's stronger than a blow to the head. he's suffered worse.

his harsh, teal gaze finds the other, and kaigaku all but snarls at him, " why didn't you run away, idiot? that thing could have killed you! "

hyouka blinks at the boy standing before her, feeling a little unsettled, on edge. she checked this room once already while searching for the demon that she was sent to kill, and while she can't sense anything wrong about this stranger, she certainly can't say this isn't weird. he's appeared as if out of thin air. hyouka supposes there's a possibility he's the demon, even if he looks human. there are those strong enough to conceal their presence, fool even a hashira.

if that's the case here, hyouka just might be in over her head.

" where did you come from? " the kanoe asks, brow furrowed and muscles taut. " and why're you here? there's a reason the village boarded this place up, y'know. " before she broke in, of course.

" you sit on the edge of your own cot, legs crossed and hands keeping busy with your poor, battered haori. there's a tear in the sleeve that you're sewing up, and your stitches are surprisingly neat despite the fact that your eyes no longer watch your work. you're too busy studying the newest addition to the infirmary and one of the few hashira you aren't familiar with. he joined their ranks after you left the kakushi -- or maybe around the same time. you aren't sure.

" you seem pretty young, " you muse aloud, and your smile grows with your excitement. " you must be really strong! "

you want to shove the blonde away from you as a mixture of pride and disgust bubbles in your belly, but your body is too weak. you're hurt, and it is only with zenitsu's help that you can stand. you hate it. you hate him. even after witnessing the truth -- how he changes once he's passed out, how he's perfected lightning breathing's first form -- you still hate him. maybe you respect him a little more, now, or maybe you will. you don't want to. even if he isn't aware of it, though, he isn't weak. it's infuriating to realize.

it's infuriating to have his help.

" just set me down for a minute, " you bark. your leg is on fire, and you can feel the blood soaking the hasty bandages you wrapped around it earlier. though you aren't far from the doctor your crow advised you to go to, you need a moment to breathe. apart from zenitsu. " you're walking too damn fast. "

it goes to show that you shouldn't try to write when you're sleepy bc last night i was struggling, but this morning i got through 7 starters pretty easily. i gotta start sleeping better asdf

a few notable changes about hyouka since i last wrote her!

i'm leaning into the fact that her decision to become a slayer was indeed selfish. she didn't want to be scared anymore and never wanted to be in a situation in which her loved ones were in trouble and she'd be powerless to help. yes, she fights to protect others and thinks of her family, but her decision was ultimately fueled by her own fears rather than a pure need to protect her family. satsuki was doing enough to keep them safe; it wasn't necessary for hyouka to become a slayer.

though hyouka will be known to be loud and a lil annoying, i'm doing away with the idea that she tends to come off rude by addressing others familiarly from the get-go and whatnot. satsuki drilled it into her when to be polite and mind her manners. hyouka will occasionally get caught up in her excitement when meeting new people, especially any hashira, but the minute she's corrected, she'll try to manage that excitement.

she's definitely impatient, but i'm not letting that affect her training. i don't think it's realistic that her teacher would have let her get away with anything less than perfect before sending her to final selection, and i think i made that decision before out of fear of making her too strong. does she still try to get out of the butterfly mansion early?? yeah bc she hates sitting still. but hyouka trained diligently and it shows!

" his voice booms with energy, though this is the norm; none of the kakushi rushing about the halls pay them any mind, much too concerned with their own duties. it is a stressful matter for them when the hashira commune twice a year like this, which is why kyojuro carries a stack of bowls in his arms. he's trying to be helpful. it's his mess, after all, and what kind of man would he be if he allowed another to tidy it?
