Blog 9: Directing a feature film
The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind
youtube
Recently I had the pleasure of watching a wonderful movie based on a true story.
‘The boy who harnessed the wind’ is a touching and inspiring movie set in Malawi it focuses on a young boy living in rural Malawi who's father is a farmer.
The young boy dreams of going to school and is able to attend until a terrible drought falls over the country and sees a great famine.
William, the main actor, along with his family have to deal with life during the drought however with will and determination William is able to help save his homeland.
The movie uses beautiful  scenic shots and incorporates the Malawian culture very well. The film touches on life in a politically unstable country and shows that despite the stereotype of ‘rural Africa’ the people and the communities are cultured, educated and peaceful.
The movie progresses as the drought worsens, Williams will to solve the issue is contagious.
An absolutely fantastic movie that highlights the incredible skill and ingenuity of a Malawian boy.

Blog 8: Visual Media Cultures and Representation
Tumblr media
Leading up until the last few years, media culture and the representation of diversity and equality has been very rare especially in media industries like film.
Woman have often been objectified, often apart of the male gaze and men have been placed into a certain category of identity where they are often supposed to meet at certain criteria looks wise and career wise.
The importance of culture diversity and representation not only benefits many other societies and cultures, along with helping rid stereotypical ideas of other people but it also benefits the industry in general.
If more films are being made to bigger audiences and new target audiences are reached, the chances of higher financial gains are likely to occur.
In recent, social changes such as the MeToo movement have opened up debate for the role woman play in film.
How can woman be viewed as equal to men in the media as opposed to the old and outdated view of them being seen as sexual objects.

Above are two articles that look at the understanding of cultural representation in the media and talk about their importance.

Blog 7: Interactive Media Industries Part 2
In this lecture Nick Irons returned to speak about the impact the gaming world has on the creative industry and how different styles of games are used to keep people ‘addicted’ or have them stay loyal to a game.
A succesful game should consist of a straight forward user interface with a captivating storyline. It should appeal to a large group of people and be accessible of platforms most target audience members would already have.
The Hooked Theory teaches a system that allows developers to create their own products that form habits with their customers and allows them to continue to stay apart of the brand.
https://medium.com/@skueong/hooked-how-to-build-habit-forming-products-book-notes-a59d30fc4f9b (Hooked Theory)
The idea for our interactive game consists of working with schools and children. The game, in the form of an app or website will be a system that works on a point system.
The children will be able to complete assignments/ tasks and their results will total up into an overall amount that at the end of the school term or at the end of any time frame the school/ teacher chooses will then go towards their school grades.
The app will have mile stones that students can work towards as well and over all have a system of rewards.

Blog 6: A Career in the Creative Economies
Tumblr media
Professor Miller spoke to us today about the world of AI and AR. He talked about how being in the creative industry was one of the most booming businesses to be involved in and exciting for that matter.
Our seminar task was to come up with a futuristic interactive dating app that incorporated AI and AR.
I envisioned a platform where dates would be able to take place completely in the comfort of ones home with no actual interaction with people. Dates can be pre recorded and sent off to prospective condors.
Aside from having a look at how the advances of technology have come so far and plan on going even further the current state of AI is just as exciting as it’s futuristic counter part.
The gaming world is one of the most developed and invested industries. From PC to console, video games have continued to develop and grow on massive scales with audiences of all kinds.
The Playstation group apart of Sony came out with their own VR headset. The company created the device that works in part with the hand held knujmchucks. This device allows players to immerse themselves fully within a game, lost as if they're really there.
The technology on AI is still new and developing and Playstation have spoken about improving the device for future games.
The idea of escaping from reality fora few hours a day sounds fantastic, you could be a deep sea diver or Superman however with new technologies like this how will big corporations like Sony be able to ensure that children and adults a like are safe and not too detached from reality.

Blog 4: Interactive Media Industries Part 1
In the lecture we focused on the usability of apps and websites, we looked at all the components that allow for them to work effectively and efficiently.
We were then tasked with coming up with an app idea that would ensure its usability was friendly and original.
I thought of the idea to incorporate Shazam, an app that finds music for you, into the system of other apps people often use of a daily basis. For example Instagram and Snapchat both have video features in their app, mu idea was to allow Shazam to load while on the app incase a song you might like comes up.
This has happened to everyone at least once, you’re watching a video or looking at a friends “story” and a very appealing song come up for a bit but you have nothing to inform you of what it is. Shazam built into your social medial apps will now take care of this. Having been on the topic of social media platforms a great interactive site is Instagram.
The way the app allows people to communicate with friends and strangers but still obtain privacy is great.
The app is very straight forward, consisting of 5 main section at the bottom of the app.
Home, Search, Upload, Activity and Profile
It’s very straight forward, navigation is simple. You are able to comment on posts, like them, send them to others and save them in folders. You can choose to follow all sorts of accounts and have the option of picking who follows you.
Instagram as a whole is a transforming application that has not only provided people with the option for a new type career of but it’s a great tool for communication and instant interaction.
The app is definitely attractive and satisfaction is 10/10.

Blog 3: Multiculturalism and Diversity in the Media (TV)
For a very long time white people have dominated the mainstream media and when other ethnic groups have been represented, it’s usually in a negative or degrading way.
However, as the world is changing and diversity in the media is largely expanding, many fantastic pieces have been created that not only provide a true depiction of people from all different backgrounds but they instill a sense of belonging into many people who for so long have been underrepresented.
The TV series Black-ish and it’s equally great spin-off Grown-ish are two wonderful examples of new shows that provide a healthy amount of ethnic diversification that’s isn’t necessarily centered on cultural stereotypes or media stereotypes for that matter.
Black-ish sees a black upper middle class family go through the trials and tribulations of life. It focuses on things that every family experiences but it also brings in to education of black culture in American, often in the era of Trump, and other cultures too.
It’s informative but not negative and sad. The representation of black people is not “stereotypical” in any way. It’s just a representation of what it’s like to be a family in the 21st century.
The spin-off Grown-ish follows the shows oldest daughter, Zoey and her experiences while at university. It’s relatable and humorous but thought provoking and extremely informative.
There’s not just the stereotypical aspect of parties and rowdy college kids, there’s topics of depression, the influence social media has on the youth, sexual assault.
There’s also a vide and realistic range of students, from all ethnic backgrounds and who are all uniquely different. Its transgressive and a treasure that should be used as an example for future shows, not to mention the creator of the show is a black man.
This sort of content allows anyone and everyone to feel included and I hope to see future shows follow the same construction of equality throughout.

Blog 2: TV/Online news reporting
Tumblr media
With the advances of social media and technology, news and the way it is accessed has changed greatly.
Information is being spread instantaneously and consumed almost constantly, it is also being provided by all types of sources.
As the world of media is no longer solely in the hands of a select few elite powers, the concept of ‘news reporting’ can pretty much be achieved by anyone.
With a rapid influx in Fake News and often very bias opinionated articles/stories, being able to have a balanced and factual variety of news stories is something of a rarity nowadays.
The R Kelly documentary  “Surviving R Kelly” and the one released by BBC both follow the infamous singers life and involvement with sexual abuse.
The issue, when looking at documentaries that discuss the scandal and liability of celebrities being accused of heinous crimes, is rather difficult to address when famous people seem to be involved especially if they are not able to give their side of the story.
The R Kelly documentary focuses on everyone involved with the infamous singer, including his victims however Kelly himself is not present.
Without a date R Kelly is a sex offender and responsible for engaging in sexual relations with under aged children, there’s proof of that.
However evidence regarding supposed ‘sex cults’ is yet to exist.
The major issue here that can be looked at from both sides is the influence Kelly has on the scandal.
Being famous seems to create some sort of bubble of protection that allows people to over look or ‘justify’ Kelly’s crimes.
If Kelly was not famous, and his tape was released exposing him of being involved with young girls would the issue at hand been to blown up? Would it have been accepted at the time? and would there be justice for the victims?
Just because someone is famous, surly the law should not excuse their actions.
As human rights groups and society in general has become a lot more aware of social justice, it is fair to argue that the re-investigation into R Kelly and all his accusations held against him take place and that his role as a celebrity is kept out altogether.

Blog 1: Film Archiving
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Film archiving is a essential aspect of history, it is the preservation, recording, maintaining and storing of pieces of art, literature and important information. Because of film archiving historians and even everyday people are able to look back at history and access information in a way that books and pictures cannot offer. The storing of films from years ago allow people to have an understanding as to how society used to function as well how the lifestyle back then has influenced the world today. As there are hundreds and thousands of films available to study they are also available to edit and source. Movies that were filmed in the 50s and 60s in black and white can now be edited and restored allowing people to see them in colour. Thanks to the technical advances movies like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” staring Audrey Hepburn have recently been restored and re- released in colour.
“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a classic romance comedy movie released in 1961 based off of a book. The film won many awards and in 2012 was deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. King, Susan. "National Film Registry selects 25 films for preservation " Los Angeles Times (December 19, 2012) The film was restored by Paramount Archives, the original studio produces for the first movie. According to Andrea Kalas, the vice president of Paramount Archives the film was originally shot in “Eastman colour” and had faded over the years. With the use of modern technology the film was able to be edited with a 4k digital restoration that was taken from the original negative that the studio still had. (King, 2019, LATimes) According to Kalas there was a lot of “cleanup” that had to be done on the movie as over the years the studio had made lots of prints off of the original negative and it had become damaged. She also spoke about how the studio kept physical film archives such as props from the movies and outfits. Kalas stated that these also helped with the restoration. (King, 2019, LATimes)
The restoration of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” can be seen in a positive and negative way. The benefits of the restoration allow for the current generation to enjoy the film in a way that they are used to, coloured movies. However the negative side to the restoration is that a sense of the “art” is taken away from the original movie. It was filmed and viewed in black and white originally and the restoration had edited that history of the movie.
In the seminar we discussed the concept of archiving a “season in our life”. We looked at the movies and shows that had a major impact of us as children and talked about how they mainly seemed to be romance comedies during the early 2000s. Movies like “She’s the Man”, “Mean Girls” and many more, had a major influence on us and were a big part of our childhood memories. We discussed how some of these movies still contribute to society and meme culture and how we often reflect of how life was so different then compared to now.

Cinema Management

The Three films above, Dreamgirls, Burlesque and Justin Bieber’s Believe Movie all share a similar background.
They have famous singers in them and are considered to be Musicals.
Dreamgirls, a fictional story set in the era of the Motown scene includes celebrities such as Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson.
The movie includes amazing songs and show sets as well as an incredible performance by an all black cast. The film has won many awards and is considered a musical masterpiece.
With regards to the movie festival theme, Dreamgirls sets the tone for Drama, comedy, romance and a captivating story with catchy songs to go along with it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyML3Kd5wXs
The musical movie Burlesque follows a similar style to that of dream girls, it has a story of a protagonist trying to make it big who also comes from nothing.
This movie has celebrities such as Christina Aguilera and Cher. It has  a great sound track and vibrant dancing much like Dreamgirls.
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ4y7czmOdQ
The Justin Bieber Believe movie, although not fictional follows the musicians rise to fame, his conflict along the way and incredible success.
This movie is considered to be a musical documentary as there are live performances by the singer as well as clips into his everyday life.
This movie fits perfectly with the others as it is in the musical group but adds a touch of real life to the mix.
In the lecture we learnt the importance of keeping cinema viewing alive and how certain cinemas cater to niche groups. There’s definitely a certain excitement that comes about from watching a movie in the cinema, especially when the entire audience is fixated onto the viewing and reacts along with everyone else.

The BBFC
Tumblr media
“The British Board of Film Censors was set up in 1912 by the film industry as an independent body to bring a degree of uniformity to the classification of film nationally. Statutory powers on film remain with the local councils, which may overrule any of the BBFC’s decisions, passing films we reject, banning films we have passed, and even waiving cuts, instituting new ones, or altering categories for films exhibited under their own licensing jurisdiction.”
As the advances of technology progress so does the media available to us.
The BBFC, over the years have taken a more objectified stance on certain material that may fall within the raider of “questionable content”. The organization has created ratings that any film or tv show can be allocated and therefore given an age limit to as well as content label so people are aware of what the film/ show is like.
A very controversial movie that at one stage was banned by the BBFC, was The Human Centipede  2. According to reviews people found the movie so repulsing they were “throwing up” into buckets during certain scenes.
As media nowadays has a right to be accessed by anyone, surprisingly The Human Centipede 2 was not shown in cinemas Nor DVD. “In June 2011, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) refused to classify The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) for a direct-to-video release, effectively meaning that the film could not legally be supplied in any format in the UK. The BBFC had given the preceding First Sequence title an 18 certificate.’
Tumblr media
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=VRTFsLFzDrE
Having scenes cut out from a movie is one thing but banning the whole film is another.
The director of the movie even stated “Thank you BBFC for putting spoilers of my movie on your website and thank you for banning my film in this exceptional way. Apparently I made an horrific horror-film, but shouldn’t a good horror film be horrific? My dear people it is a f***ing MOVIE.”
Heres an article to why the movie was banned:

TV Scripting
The film industry holds many different categories where work and creative output is welcomed. The production industry for TV shows and movies is definitely a more creative field that requires multiple people in order to see the continuation of a show succeed. Below are some of the job titles found within the production industry:
First there is the film director, this position requires many responsibilities such as-
reading scripts
work with writers and provide feedback on the further development of scripts
select actors - sometimes working with casting directors and producers during this selection process
monitor rehearsals
direct actors during the filming
select locations for filming
hold meetings with key departments such as camera, art department and costume during the planning stages and throughout the filming
agree the budget and schedule of the film with the producer
be responsible for staying on budget and schedule
supervise all creative aspects of the production
work with the editor to present the final version of the film
select music for the final film and/or work with a composer to decide on the musical score
build and develop a network of contacts including writers, producers, film festivals and public funding bodies
maintain contemporary technical skills
have an awareness and knowledge of emerging industry trends.( 1)
Location manager-
assessing and interpreting scripts or story boards to get an understanding of the location required
meeting with the director and designer to discuss projects and working to their creative vision
collating ideas and undertaking research using resources such as the internet, specialist location libraries, local and regional film commissions and agencies
visiting and photographing locations appropriate to budget in order to assess their suitability
making preliminary enquiries regarding access, parking and location use
collating practical information on potential locations, such as hotels for accommodating the crew and cast and in the case of photography shoots, often booking the hotel and making travel arrangements
liaising with key members of the production team to assess visual and technical specifications
ensuring no disruptive noises or events are likely to occur during the shoot
negotiating access and drawing up a contract with location owners
organising permissions for access, for example, with local authorities and the police
scheduling crew arrival dates and times and keeping all parties informed on site
ensuring the technical specifications for equipment, power sources and crew accommodation on site are met(2)
 Film/ Video editor-
receiving a brief, and maybe an outline of footage and/or a shot list, script, or screenplay
assembling all raw footage, with camera shots either recorded or transferred onto video tape in preparation for inputting into the computer
inputting uncut rushes and sound, and synchronising and storing them into files on the computer
digitally cutting files to put together the sequence of the film and deciding what's usable
creating a 'rough cut' (or assembly edit) of the programme/film and determining the exact cutting for the next and final stages
reordering and fine-tuning the content to ensure the logical sequencing and smooth running of the film/video.(3)
In the seminar lecture we were tasked with creating a potential TV show that could be presented to a TV network.
The group that I was in decided to focus on a TV comedy show that bordered a more mature line of entertainment. The idea we came up with was a show where Jesus has returned to earth to warn humanity that dark times are on the horizon unless they get their act together. The should would simultaneously deal with political issues, and social injustices.
We pictured a very humorous man playing the position of Jesus. Possibly a Kevin Hart-type comedian that would go again all stereotypes of Jesus as well as bring light to many social micro-aggressions taking place in society.
Tumblr media
In the lecture in was also brought up that a script writer along with an editor would need to work creatively hand in hand to ensure the idea of a show is seen through and that anyone funding it, will be on board.

A Look At Advertising
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Advertising plays such a vital role in the enhancement of a product or service.
Being able to captivate an audience, obtain a new market or simply convince people to buy into your idea is definitely a skill many would love to have. Over the past two lectures the idea of a “bad advert campaign” was brought up.
Despite the concept of all media and awareness being good, regardless of its content this doesn't necessarily always apply to the advertising world.  Dr Paul Booth talked a lot about the advertising industry and the importance of meeting “your clients needs”, he mentioned the severity of knowing your audience and appealing to their desires. This concept falls into the group of mass market research that can either be conducted by surveys or group reviews. knowing the demographic of a country is also essential as peoples views differ and are influenced why where they are situated.
With that being said in the above two adverts one is considered to be a really good advert print while the other one is not. The first picture is so captivating because it latches onto one market immediately. The ad is for watching movies on your phone. It could be said that this image attaches itself to a younger generation as the image shows a text message with two emojis. The text is hinting at the movie ‘Finding Nemo’ as it is a film targeted at children and thus easily understood. It can also be said that the simplicity of the text shows the ease and simple use of the application being marketed.
The second advert is not a good example. The comparison of smoking to terrorism as represented but the tragic events of 9/11 are not a clever idea at all. The idea is distasteful and offensive to many people who where involved in the event. The advert is also attaching a negative stigma to people who smoke and could very well be mislabelling people.
Tumblr media
Here is a link to some more examples of good and bad adverts:
https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/best-advertisements
http://uk.businessinsider.com/worst-ads-of-the-year-2017-12/#1-pepsis-kendall-jenner-protest-ad-grade-f--10
As we were tasked with coming up with our own advert campaign, myself and the group I was apart of chose to look at the Lego concept of advertising  towards parents.
We drafted the idea of a child hypnotized and caught within a stimulation of technology. The child is then gifted with a lego toy and his whole world is shifted to a more objective view. The setting of the room is no longer dark and grim, the child is able to be creative and is no longer influenced but technology.
The second idea we came up with focused on a child wearing a virtual reality head set, he/she wonders outside the front door, unaware of their surroundings, and trips over a lego block just before stumbling onto the road where a bus or oncoming is. This advert plays on the dangers of tech as well as the benefits that Lego have towards children. It shows that the toy will keep children aware of whats around them, unlike technology, and will allow for creativity.
Advertising is a crucial part of getting a product/ service out into the world and the different approaches of it allow for ideas to be put out and niche audiences to latch onto something that suits them best.
Below are a list of some of the qualities found in advertising:

Working in the Film Industry
Having someone come and share their first hand experiences of what it’s like to work is the film industry can only been described as exciting.
As any other adolescent, it’s pretty fair to say that I have a very undecided idea of what I would like to do once I graduate university.
The film industry has always been so awe-inspiring to me because it mixes in the field of creativity and fame. Not to say that those are the only two captivating qualities of the industry but they are synonymous for being associated with it.
Having really listened to what Teresa, an assistance director, had to say about the industry I've gathered that 1.) nothing really happens overnight- there’s a lot of movie magic involved. and 2.) the industry is A LOT of hard, dedicated and time consuming work. - A personal life isn't really an option.
I’d like to imagine that if I were to ever venture deeper within the film industry, I’d be involved with the creative side of things. From coming up with new ideas for movies and TV shows or maybe even possibly finding myself on the directors cut edition.

To be able to create is a gift like no other, but to be able to create and share your work with the world, especially for the better, well that’s the ultimate gift.
some work positions within the industry:
Film Director- being able to over see the creative process.
Hair/ Makeup artist- providing a crucial visual aspect to any film.
Location Manager- overseeing the sets, places of interest to film and most importantly ensuring the smooth running of location sets throughout the films production.
Director of photography- Also known as a cinematographer, very important with arranging images in place.
The industry is so broad and wide, it offers many different job opportunities that appeal to many of my interests.
I definitely have a great appreciation and respect for anyone dedicating their time and effort to the field and I am excited to learn more about the creative complexities behind each Hollywood Box Office Hit!
