Artist Wall (studio 4)
I focused on experimenting with my style and choice of medium for this project. When I hear the word portrait I don’t just think of people, I thought of style and personalised thats something I really wanted to show in my work. I think colour and humour are two major parts of my personality so I made that a main part of my artwork. I did self portrait for the majority of my work as I have easy access to my own brain and personality so that seemed to me the best option available.
I used marker, acrylic paint, oil pastels and gauche in this pieces. This is unseal for me as I mainly stick to one medium and rarely stray. I found this project as an opportunity to challenge that and I’m happy with my final pieces.

Mind map / Collage I made for the portrait project.
I tried to include everything I think is a major factor in my being. The music and films I enjoy, to the food I eat and even my childhood.
This helped me to get inspired and excited about creating.

Artist Research:
Elizabeth Peyton
I really enjoy Peyton’s work. She creates beautiful paintings from subject matter she enjoys, such as celebrities and films. They’re lighthearted and fun. There something romantic about them, the way she uses colour and her blending. The cherry red lips that often appear on her subject matter. I particularly like the image she painted from twilight.
I tried to take some of this into my own work and involve the media I enjoy in my art.

I did a sketch of myself (again , I know I need to get a grip)
and then printed that onto a piece a plastic and used the projector to make it bigger. I then traced over that in marker and used colour to transform the piece.

Finished piece
I am far happier with this painting now than i was originally. I really like the background and the colour scheme. I chose to do this painting of a mirror selfie because I found it funny, it’s just a silly picture. I’m making a face and wearing a twilight t shirt. I’m in the bathroom of my limerick home (digs).
I think my self image and personality show through in this.

Artist research:
Mel Bocher
Bocher is an artist who uses a lot of text in his work. I usually enjoy this kind of art however I am not a fan of Bocher’s work.
I find that his work is hard to read . It almost gives me a headache. I like the texture but that’s about it.

Artist research :
David Shrigley
I looked into some of shrigleys work as a source of inspiration for humour in my own art.
I find his art very amusing. I like how he doesn’t take himself or his work too seriously. It’s refreshing to see artwork as something other than deep and serious. I took a book of his from the library “Fully coherent plan , for a new and better society” and found myself intrigued and by how effective his drawings and humour work together. Simple black and white illustrations, sometimes with text. Very lighthearted and silly.
Here are some of my favourite pages from his book.

Impasto self portrait.
I found this quite difficult at first. It’s very hard to create lines or fine detail. However I really enjoyed working with the painting and moving it around trying to create this piece . I like how the hair and easel look the best.

This is a mixed media piece I made.
I had recently had a campfire with my friends and that was in my mind. I combined a portrait I made from oil pastels of a selfie I took and an impasto painting of the campfire. This is a reference to a meme of a young girl smiling in-front of a fire. This later led to an edited image of musician Lana del Rey smiling in-front of a fire. Another common meme surround Lana Del Rey is “this is so lana del rey vinyl”. I thought it would be funny to make reference to this in my own work.

Unfinished piece.
I am not happy with how this portrait is going at the moment. I’m taking a break from it but okay in finishing it.

10 minute drawings.
20 minutes spent in each pose. We drew it twice, I think I really improved the second time around.
