Project statement
When we were given this project initially I wanted to go with my own personal movement, I decided against the idea as it was too broad
chose to do movement of line as lines are everywhere in every day life and there are so many different types of line weather it be photography, painting or in animation.
I found that this worked well for me and I enjoyed exploring and experimenting with the electives.

Animation Task 1
Cut-Out Animation
Cut out animation is a form of stop motion animation. To create a cut out animation, the artist must use paper cutouts of characters that are superimposed on animated environments. This animation style is similar to shadow puppets however, with modern technology, these paper cutouts can be scanned into a streamline process. Cut-out animation is most commonly used for cartoons and youtube storytelling/ explanation videos. I like this technique because it feels organic to me and the process is interesting to me. An example of cutout animation is a childhood favourite of mine, Charlie and Lola

Stop motion Animation
Stop motion animations are created using a series of pictures/photographs with small tweaks and adjustments i between. Motion is created by moving still objects gradually, bit by bit. Eventually this is processed and turned into a video which is a much quicker watch than the actual process. Fantastic Mr.Fox is an example of stop motion animation.

Motion Graphics Animation
Motion Graphics is a type of digital animation where footage is used to create the illusion of motion or rotation, it is usually combined with multimedia projects and audio sounds. Some examples of this is animated graphic loops, animated typography, animated logos and product animations. Here is a Motion Graphic example by TO-FU. I like this style because it is interactive and informative.

Clay Painting- mirror piece

Throughout my project I’ve looked at movement of line- to see any time of movement we use our eyes- for this piece the focus is eye movement, I took a more imaginative approach to get out some creativity
I used clay to create the surface around the mirror and I painted layers and layers of paint until I was happy with the final piece

Painting

Initial layers on glass

Combining photography and painting- When looking at movement in photography I loved the look of long exposure shots, from this sprouted inspiration to paint this piece to demonstrate this movement in a different medium.
I used acrylic paint and dabbed the paint on, I also used a palette knife for the clothing.

Pinhole Camera: Assembling/Photography/Editing/placement
Final Product:
12&15 second exposure

Developed paper prior to inversion:

Assembling:
I used an empty film canister to create the pinhole camera.

Editing:
I edited the inverted image as the photography paper is black and white and I wanted to experiment with vibrancy/colour/tones. I was surprised to find that in doing this, the appearance changed in the background and the overall image, making each one unique.

Placement/what I was taking a picture of:
I chose this placement for two reasons. The first being that there are a lot of leading lines in this composition which shows movement of line through a visual aspect. The second reason being that this is one of the entrances to the college so in a literal sense there is constant movement here as people come in and out of the car park for college daily (including myself).

Animation task 3

I decided to draw this character to better understand my style. I used no reference pictures intentionally to try and see where my art took me, this approach made me more analytical with my choices and my work and I was very pleased with the outcome

Movement of Line

I was in a friend’s house today and noticed that she had a stained glass window. I decided to photograph it and upload it to my tumblr because the movement of the lines on the window are relevant to my project.

I liked the way the lines were curved, there is no set or clear image, in comparison to traditional stained glass windows. The colours were cast onto the sofa which also shows movement through light from one place to another.

Throughout the day as the sun began to set, the colored lines moved across to the other side of the room, again displaying movement.

Painting with coffee on cardboard

The circle painted with a thick flat brush and was created in one swift movement. The circle is an enlarged coffee stain (which would be made by a takeaway coffee cup) the thick to thin line displays movement of the brush going around, losing its saturation towards the end.
Movement of line is shown by the coffee spill, moving the eyes towards the circle

The three faces were created using coffee. Once I dipped my brush in the coffee, I didn’t lift my brush from the page, making it a line drawing/painting. The drips were accidental however they show movement by dripping down.

I then decided that I didn’t like the look of my piece so a painted a different composition and made my own recreation of the hands of God and Adam.

Scanography
I found using the scanner at night with no light was the most effective way to scan, as you can see with the lighter below.

Gestural Life Drawing Workshop (Painting/charcoal)

30 second studies:

5 minute studies:

10 minute studies:

The model did multiple poses to allow the class to practice gestural drawing- I found the life drawing very fast paced which helped me move away from perfectionism and more towards drawing what I saw in front of me. It was a great opportunity to strengthen my skills and I enjoyed the process of the workshop immensely.

Movement of Line: Train & Triangles

I found that a 45 degree angle gave the best appearance of depth when using line as a medium to show movement. Leading lines are the primary type of line I too chose to focus on when taking these pictures. I experimented with different settings, different compositions and different angles.

Hiroshi Sugimoto
Photography research

Movement of Line: Organic line// Photography
Hiroshi Sugimoto is a Japanese photographer. He created these abstract images using photographic paper and electrical charges, creating an image of electricity, and organic line. To achieve this, he used a 400,000 volt electrode which etches the sparks directly onto the film.
The organic nature of the line displays movement of the electrical current across the photographic paper. I find this to be a very unique way of showing movement in photography as no two images come out the same.
