PROJECT STATEMENT
• The direction I decided to take from the brief ‘Story’ was in relation to the poem ‘The Wild Swans of Coole by WB Yeats. I have always loved this poem as the setting holds many fond memories of my childhood. I focused on the lines “all suddenly mount, And scatter wheeling in great broken rings, Upon their clamorous wings” as I could clearly visualise these actions playing out and the beat of the wings echoing through the wood. I took these memories and explored different concepts and ideas that could develop further into a final poster or book cover.
•From the beginning of this project I was constantly developing my ideas and never stuck to one approach. I enjoyed exploring different aspects of design and researching different artists/designers as a source of inspiration to create a piece that best fit the message I was trying to portray.
•I believe my final poster captures the appreciation I have for Coole Park and the swans that reside there, as well as successfully merging the old style of the times in which the poem was written, along with my more modern style.

FINAL POSTER

This is the final design of my poster. I found the darker colour of the background works best, as the lighter one made the swan seem out of place. The also think the mix between the old and the modern type compliments the theme of my project well. Overall I’m happy with how it turned out.

FINALISING DRAFTS

After the tutorial today I decided on the third layout and edited certain parts of it like the text and the rings. I also tested out different colour schemes to see what would work best.

LAYOUT 3
process -

testing type -

final draft -

I think this draft is my favourite mainly due to the use of different typefaces for the title. I experimented again with different text and also the scale of the swan shape.

LAYOUT 2
process + testing type -

final draft -

This is my second layout draft. I decided to mix up the colours and see what effect that would give. Not fully sure which version of the type works best but I like the simplicity of the last one.

LAYOUT 1
process -

testing type -

final draft -

Experimenting with Adobe Illustrator. The progress was slow as I was figuring out how to use it, but I’m happy with the first finished layout draft. I like the shape of the swans head and how the ripple pattern merges with the curve of the swans neck on the left. Will finalise my poster after the group tutorial tomorrow.

TYPE
As I’m making a poster I am focusing on clear and simple type. I am experimenting with different typefaces and effects they can give that would work best for my poster, especially the mix of the old and more modern aspects.

ARTIST RESEARCH

- mid century graphic design

- minimal film poster design
I’m using these two styles of design as inspiration for my project as I enjoy their simplicity and find them appealing to the eye, whilst also working well with my concept.

Using the ripples that can be created as a swan leaves or returns to water as a source of inspiration for this project. I have decided to use the repeated circle that the ripples create to form a new shape and pattern for my poster.

TUESDAY 13th APRIL 2021
On our call today with Lorraine she told us about the site 100 archive to use as a source of inspiration for our projects. After the call I researched different typography styles that I would work well with my poster/book cover idea.

TUESDAY 13th APRIL 2021
Some more development of my poster/book cover idea. Focusing more on the shape of the swans head more than the entire body and using mid century graphic design as my source of inspiration to create a modern piece.

MONDAY 12th APRIL 2021
After getting back from the Easter I decided to use Mary van de Wiel’s approach that she told us about on how to get back into art. I got a black permanent marker and sketched out a scene from down my road, not trying to make it perfect just focusing on shape and I found this really helped.

FRIDAY 26th MARCH 2021
Today I created moodboards to represent the direction I would like to take for my poster or book cover. I made one into my sketchbook using photos from the internet, magazine cut outs and my own experimentations. I also made two digital ones, all focusing on an orange toned colour scheme, bold/modern typography and interesting use of shape and patterns.
