the thing about me as a birder is that i don't care about seeing rare birds. i dont give a fuck about seeing rare birds. northern cardinals and tufted titmice are my ride or dies. i will fuck with american robins until my final breath. i fear not the birder who has seen 10,000 birds one time, but one bird 10,000 times

My aunt and uncle who live in the Bay Area sent me these pics of this female hummingbird that's been nesting on a vine on their porch. Cautiously IDing as Anna's hummingbirds, but I'm from the Midwest and don't know my hummingbird species well. The chicks, once eggs smaller than a dime, are all grown up! I cannot emphasize enough that I would literally die for them.

Hello! Long time, no update.
Since my last post in January, a lot has happened in my life. I graduated* college and now work full-time. I'll also be moving to New York City in a few short months, once my organization returns to in-person work Having grown up in the Midwest and having lived in a small town in SE Pennsylvania for the past four years, this is a big move. I am apprehensive, mostly about the cost of living in NYC on my okay-but-not-amazing salary. I am, however, thrilled about my prospective access to places that sell dumplings. 🥟😋🍽
Perhaps more importantly for this blog, my DSLR broke and I have not had a chance to either fix it or purchase a better camera. I purchased my Nikon Coolpix B500 in 2017 for $350 in anticipation of a trip to France. I have often felt skeptical of wildlife photography as a hobby given that it's like 10% skill, 10% luck, and 80% being able to afford a $6000 camera setup; nevertheless, my beloved Coolpix was my faithful companion through five years and thousands of bird photos, some of which were pretty damn good! Like this female mallard I caught on the partially-frozen Huron River in Ann Arbor in January 2021:

This is all to say that I traveled to NYC this past weekend to get a better feel for the city and insisted on going to the Central Park Reservoir to see some cool ducks. I did see some cool ducks, and did my best to get some decent shots my angling my phone through my birding binoculars. Please enjoy these shots of a male gadwall and male wood duck!

I am back from hiatus! Here is a female northern saw-whet owl I got to hold at a research station in southeastern PA back in November. Northern saw-whets are the smallest owls in Eastern North America and are just as soft as they look 💕
