Song Joong-Ki x GQ Korea
“If I had to explain what kind of a person Katy is, I can tell you lots of stories about what a nice person she is. But since today’s interview is limited in time and space, I won’t be able to tell you everything. Simply put, she is a friend who gives me trust in many aspects. For example, there are thoughts and philosophies that I usually have, and she is a woman who reconvinces me that they are correct. [She is] a friend who often tells me, ‘That sounds like you.‘”
“At first, I was fine. It was an everyday occurrence for us, and even if many people know about it, our love wouldn’t change. But then, when the nonsensical stories kept growing, I got angry honestly. Except for the name of the university that she attended (Milan Bocconi University), none of the rumors were true.”
“When my anger was growing, Katy told me, ‘You don’t have to be angry with these people.’ I can’t say much about it here, but she is that kind of a person. She guides me toward a positive direction and balances me out.”
“That day, I registered our marriage and went straight to the script reading and gosa (a traditional Korean ritual to pray for good luck when starting a big event) site for the film ‘My Name is Loh Kiwan.’ Katy and I had a late dinner together after finishing work. That day was really hectic.”

Vincenzo is two years old now and I obviously didn't watch it when it was airing but looking at the instagram posts and Twitter edits, let me tell you, the nostalgia is so real.

I'm kind of upset that Innocent Man didn't get any love. Its honestly a brilliant drama though I think since it's a bit old people might not have watched it. But the chemistry between MCW and SJK is phenomenal and so is the overall acting of everyone. And there's also LKS which is just hilarious.
Also I need people to love Chul-soo more. The cutest werewolf I ever saw. And I never cry in movies but the ending in this got me so bad. Though the CGI is a bit tacky, the movie in general is wonderful. And he has got one dialogue. One! But it's so soulful that it moves you so much.
And I want to know about the one person who voted for other, what did you like?
Let's go! Others include Battleship Island, Obs & Gynae (I still didn't manage to learn the name lol), Penny Pinchers, Deep Rooted Tree, Will it snow for Christmas and Triple.
I might be missing some, I'm not sure.
THIS IS A VERY VERY IMPORTANT POLL FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES. WE ARE SPREADING SJK LOVE HERE.

THIS! THIS IS EVERYTHING THAT I LOVE! SONG JOONG KI IS A GEM AND I NEED SO MUCH MORE OF HIM!
There was the video dissecting the expressions of SJK that @luna-rainbow had posted and that post and this post is just everything I needed. The acting in Reborn Rich and the brilliant scenes with LSM are so so good.
Also, OP, please please give Vincenzo a try. Stick it out till the 3rd episode ending and you won't ever regret it, I swear. The whole drama is an ode to SJK. And the acting. THE ACTING IS JUST🤌🏼
This will be a Song Joong ki appreciation post.
Reborn Rich is the first show I've seen Song Joong ki in. I tried to watch Vincenzo, but either I didn't know how to watch kdramas that weren't romances yet or it just wasn't to my taste. So this is the first time I've had the opportunity to be completely blown away by the love affair this man has with cameras.
Dear.
Lord.
Look, I have a diagnosed inability to read faces and understand emotional subtext based on body language, but I can understand Song Joong ki's freaking microexpressions, the small movements around his eyes and mouth that I've always been told convey so much but never really understood. And I'm pretty sure that what he's doing is soft and subtle, the kind of thing you can only get away with on camera. But GOD. DAMN. This man can convey so much with a shift of his shoulders.
In Ep 10, when he leaned over his aunt and said that she taught him how to make this type of play, I could *see* every second that his mother had been humiliated. I could SEE him drop the polite veneer he maintains around his father's family and SEE him just sink into the burning hatred he has for every member of the Soonyang group.
HOLY CRAP.
Reborn Rich has *so* much to say about poverty and inequality, and it's destroying me so hard. Back to back with Little Women, I find myself wondering who is going so hard on this and why. It's SHOCKING. I'm devastated. Give me so much more.
I know I'm late on the Song Joong ki is a god on screen train, so please forgive me. I promise to retry Vincenzo in the new year. I promise to spend every moment I can enjoying the luscious way he just knows the camera is capturing every nuance of his performance and the unadulterated trust he must have in his audience to understand what he is doing and saying.
I'm ready for Ep 11 now, please. Thank you.

YES YES! I AGREE! 100%!
Though I don't think HCY was there when the SJK gif happened. It's from when he met the homeless guy as far as I remember. But he 100% did it in private with HCY and HCY copied him!
But you know what would be even better? HCY did it first and Vin copied it because that'd be just so cute. Vin inculcating HCY into his life because he's just so enamoured by her and him getting that soppy smile whenever he looks at her (Ah my Chayenzo heart).
I also like the idea of Vin being influenced by HCY as much as HCY was influenced by him. And also the fact that everyone else is copying Vin and here is puppy-eyed heart-on-sleeve-for-hcy Vin copying HCY because he's just so in love with her.
Just the family trying to be more like Vincenzo.

Underrated moments. And I know the one with Jang Han seo is pretty famous but the other two especially the first one is so underrated. Comedy gold right there.

YES! YES TO ALL OF THIS! The point is the entire drama is supposed to be subtle Do Jun. He wants to be in control and not show his feelings to succeed. The very few times we see him vulnerable is during the elevator scene and the hospital scene is Min-yeong as far as I can remember and of course the video message by Yang-cheol. He needs to be in control of the way he is leading the conversation where he wants it to go. I agree with you saying about the "innocent grandchild" persona but I also think somewhere he also needed to be the adult 40 year old YHW that he is to make his stand. To show his grandfather that he is not kidding around. And he is hiding it being the 20 year old innocent persona but you can see it in SJK's smiles and his eyes. The pent-up anger, some frustration but a whole lot of determination. I also like to think JDJ is super nervous and scared when going into the conversation because he was well hidden behind Oh Se-Hyeon until then. And this is his first direct power play and there's some places where you can see he's scared. And it's phenomenally portrayed.
I might get some flak for this but all the other characters had the liberty to be expressive- to hit, to rage, to show they're scared or disturbed or frustrated and all the other emotions. JDJ is the only one who doesn't allow himself to show it ever and it's in the little twitches of the eye and the finger and jaw tightenings. It's very subtle but it's not as if it's inapparent. You'll see it only if you bother to notice. Of course I spend all my time staring at SJK when he is on screen so it's completely possible I pick up more of it, but the point stands.
Editing to add, there was also that scene where YHW's mum dies where he shows brilliant acting and also also that scene where JDJ sees YHW on the road, where there's that amazing scene of light and dark to show the difference. Also, now, retrospectively thinking, I can't explain it but there's two different people in my head JDJ and YHW and YHW even in the flashbacks showed immense range of emotions. Which shows some great acting chops there as well.
Also, I don't know which news sites you read and I may not be right but there's a very specific sect criticising SJK's acting because as far as I've read or heard, people are all praises. Of course, there's comparisons with LSM and that man shined but SJK very well held his own throughout.
I need to stop looking at Chinese news site because there are so many articles just shitting on Song Joongki. One of the new accusations is that his acting was the worst out of Reborn Rich.
Like yes, most of the other actors were fantastic, but SJK completely held his own. If anything, I thought his acting was better in Reborn Rich than it was in Vincenzo. Most of the other characters had far more emotional scenes, and they were allowed to be hysterical and hyperbolic. For example, the scene which Chinese watchers called fantastic acting was Hwayoung screeching as she stamped the contract with Dojun...to me that scene was overwrought with theatrical exaggeration. I much preferred the scene where she was worried about Yangchul's health and then realised he didn't even want to tell them he was fine...the indignation and the betrayal in that scene had so much more teeth in it than her screeching like a kettle.
SJK had the opposite task. Dojun is a very reserved character, but SJK conveyed so much through his microexpressions. (I got annoyed enough to make an entire video.)
youtube
This scene takes place in episode 5, where Miracle Investment (with Dojun behind the scenes) competed with Soonyang to purchase a motor company and one of the contentious requests was to for Soonyang to retain the original labourers. It's one of my favourite scenes because of the script, but it's also one of the best acting scenes from him. You can see the full range of emotions Dojun is going through as Yangchul attacks something deeply personal to him, even if his expressions remain restrained.
It's ironic that people say that the scene in the elevator (where he shouts at Yangchul to hide his accident) is the "first time they felt he could act". That is literally the point of spending 12 episodes with a character who resolutely refused to let himself be emotional. The first time he broke character was to protect the dignity of his opponent. That scene wouldn't have been meaningful if the show didn't establish Dojun's character as reserved and unflappable. I don't know if this is because of Cdramas or what, but good acting isn't defined by being able to scream loudly!! Nor is it defined by how aggressive or domineering you are. The face offs between Yangchul and Dojun are fascinating to watch because Dojun provides the perfect poised counterpoint to Yangchul's strident aggression. One is overwhelming and blistering, the other one is calm and unyielding, and that contrast is exactly what two well-matched opponents would be. People complaining that he looked "too unfazed" in the showdowns missed the whole point.

I love the video so much. And I do agree that his acting is underrated in the drama but I also heard people say that the scenes with LSM and SJK were the most impactful and powerful. So I think people do know he's acting well. It's just LSM and the entire cast had the liberty to 'show' their expressions while SJK didn't because of his character. And I think the acting and his expression changes are much more apparent and appreciable when you rewatch a scene. The entire cast was pretty great in the drama. I also love the scene where Yang-cheol finds out that Do Jun is the one who is actually behind Miracle and not Oh Se-Hyeon. The chills. I was so scared for SJK lol.
The microexpressions dissected in the video are so so good!

Justice is weak and empty.
One cannot win against villains with justice alone.
If merciless justice exists, I'm willing to yield to it.
Even villains long to live in a peaceful world.
However, since that's impossible, I've taken up a new hobby.
Getting rid of garbage.
If I don't do that, people will die, buried underneath the garbage.
There's one last thing I'd like to say from a villain's perspective.
Evil is prevalent and vehement.
- Vincenzo Cassano (Episode 20)

I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS SHOW.
If it hasn't been apparent enough, I adore this show. From the first episode to the last, everything works for me. The casting. The cinematography. The dialogues. The ost. Every single thing hits right. It includes almost all of the tropes I like. The humour is just right for me. And same goes for the dark scenes. I cannot coherently explain how much I love this show. And I've watched plenty of dramas but this will probably remain the best drama I've ever watched. I also love the parallels the show draws. And I also love that it didn't end the usual way and left Vin to be the amazing villain he is and HCY to be the badass lawyer she is. Hands down, the best drama I've ever watched.
AHHHHHH.

While I'm at it, I'd also like to say that Episode 16 is my absolute favorite of Vincenzo (and perhaps of all the dramas I've ever watched). The acting range. The funny moments interspersed with the darkness. The emotions. Everything. It all came so beautifully together. And it might as well be the most heartbreaking episode and I have also cried loads but there was ultimately nothing more perfect than this episode.

The intimacy of Cha-young and Vincenzo lies in this moment for me. They're not even on the screen together but it's so perfect. Vin says he's going to the hospital without any prompting and CY just listens and is just so understanding of Vin. And there are multiple moments throughout the series where the chemistry between the two characters shines through but the level of chemistry they manage to show when they're not even together on the screen is so remarkable.
Tumblr media
And this. This entire sequence where CY knows how Vin is going to react and what he needs at the moment is so so brilliant to me. I know it's been said before but it's worth saying again. This is the mature relationship that's needed. Vin and CY respect each other and know what the other can handle. They are aware of when the other needs a push and when the other needs a supporting hand. And more importantly, they are brilliant individually but together, they shine. They enable and support each other. They bounce ideas off of each other. They just work together. And that's another reason why I love the ending as well. They don't need to be close to be intimate or to make it work. And they would never pull each other down or stop the other from doing what they love or what needs to be done. They are always standing right there cheering the other on. And that's just perfect to me🤌🏼

So I didn't see Vincenzo when it was airing. Saw it at the end of last year and loved it. And I was rewatching it and I started reading the episode discussions on reddit and it's like a treasure. Because now I know what's going to happen and these people don't but some of the theories were so outlandish while some were so on point. And it's so hilarious to see perception of some characters being changed after every few episodes because of the storyline. And it's like I'm vibing with them because it's been so long and I have no one to talk to Vincenzo about. Reading these threads is my favorite pastime atm. And some of the threads are so good but.
