And none of them bat any eye about the possibility of hunting down dissidents. Real G-man material here
Wow, what a team… No, that’s not Espio. That’s Ken Penders’ legally distinct original character, Espio With A Hat

Tbf I think he was going more for those bogus "local weirdo gives out amphetamines to children as Halloween candy" stories which while still woefully inaccurate to how young people actually get addicted to drugs, I can't say they were substantially less realistic than normal D.A.R.E programmes
It’s been suggested that this issue might be some sort of anti-drug PSA thing. A Very Special Issue of Knuckles the Echidna, if you will. This is entirely possible. The “war on drugs” was big in the 90s, after all, and lots of children’s media attempted to tackle the issue
The problem is, the arc isn’t framed like that at all. It doesn’t have all the classic DARE-style warnings about the dangers of peer pressure. You know, the part where the cool kids convince an innocent tween to smoke a cigarette or something to fit in? Mello didn’t even know he was drugged. All of the victims in this story are getting drugged by eating food laced with LSD from an amusement park
It also doesn’t break character to tell the audience “winners don’t do drugs” or anything like that. In this issue at least, they never address the subject directly. And while the references to LSD are painfully obvious to adult readers, kids reading at the time might not have even picked up on the drug aspect because they avoided calling it a drug. They just kept saying the kids were “poisoned”
So if this is supposed to be some kind of anti-drug PSA arc, it’s not really doing its job. It does a better job convincing me not to buy food at a theme park

Apparently, Bollers was just following Gallagher's blueprint as evidenced by Mexico existing

okay now I see why Flynn head-canoned Max as being voiced by Tim Curry
So King Acorn is in charge because he was dipped in a magic pool of gold and then they used that gold to make him a sword and crown that allow him to talk to God, basically
Well, all right then
#StH 58#tkp post#archie sonic#ken penders#king Max#tim curry#I'm surprised nobody made an animatic of Max being voiced by Curry

the way Overlander is emphasised along with the state of Mobian-Overlander relations as revealed previously it seems like Sonic is preparing to drop the hardest nanti-human racial slur he knows
Is this really the best art Archie’s team could put out for this big crossover? The background is nice but look at Sally over there

No fucking way the comics tag line was introduced in the sonic x image comics crossover
It’s time
This is the second of four Sonic stories from the ‘90s that were never reprinted in another special or some sort of compilation volume. It’s a crossover with Image Comics, the publisher of series such as Spawn, The Darkness, Saga, Witchblade, and The Walking Dead, among others.
Yes, Spawn is in this
But this issue holds more significance to followers of Ken Penders’s work, as it introduced several characters that would later star in The Lost Ones, an original superhero comic created by Penders for Image Comics. He used this crossover as a chance to pitch that story
The Lost Ones lasted exactly one issue

The issue opens with a VERY interesting prologue taking place in the past. In it, we see a younger Dr. Robotnik, fleeing after betraying his own people, the Overlanders (humans). Sonic’s dad and Uncle Chuck take him to King Acorn, and Robotnik (then Julian Kintobor (ugh)) gives him some valuable tactical information
Yes, there are more humans than just Robotnik and Snively on Mobius, and they’ve been at war with the Mobians for a very long time

Tbh as a comic enthusiast all of this is fucking priceless to me. On one hand, it's very obviously a 90s comic, back when Liefeld was still big, and everything was violent and edgy. On the other hand, unlike many comics of its era, this one still abided by Comics Code Authority. And on the completely completely other hand, it's Sonic freaking the Hedgehog. This is something absolutely unique and bizarre. You convinced me to read this series in its entirety, it's just too weird to pass up.
Yeah, the ‘90s Sonic comics are some of the most bizarre things to come out of an already weird decade for comics. They’re like an encapsulation of all the media at the time and I don’t think comics like these could’ve come out of any other decade

You know, I’m okay with the writers trying to take Sonic more seriously, but it’s kind of hard for the comic to get this heavy when two pages ago a character named Sleuth Doggy Dog made a wisecrack about chili dogs and Sonic just said his own name as a logo

you know having the James Bond parody prey on younger women is surprisingly in character
Oh god. Something was just brought to my attention and this is just the shit icing on the doodoo cake when it comes to Geoffrey St. John
In every story he’s appeared in, he’s made out with Sally, like so
Sally is around the same age as Sonic, so she’s 15 or 16 years old
But I hadn’t thought about Geoffrey’s age
And the wiki says
GROSS GROSS GROSS GROSS GROSS GET THIS FUCKING SKUNK OUT OF THIS COMIC
#Future Bobby is here with an edit in the tags to clarify this a bit:#Geoffrey's age on the wiki was extrapolated from a flashback where he may or may not have been drawn older than he should have been#so there's some debate about his age#but regardless Geoffrey is definitely in his 20s here. so uh. still very bad!!! that he's so intent on making a move on a 15-year-old!!!!!#StH 46#tkp post#Geoffery St. John#pedophilia mention ///#archie sonic#ken penders#james bond

maybe him discovering the knock off Batcave is meant to signify him realising that not all technology is evil thus pushing him to become an enlightened centrist?
“Some people aren’t happy that my family is forcing everyone to throw away their technology because my uncle got taken over by an ancient evil and tried to take over the world for like a day or two, but you know, we still kind of want everyone to do that, so we’re just gonna have to find a middle ground here so that everyone can be happy :-)”

Tbf I don't think he's meant to be well adjusted
The original leader of the Dark Legion is the son of Dimitri, the guy who absorbed the Chaos Emeralds and turned into an ancient demon named Enerjak. And he claims he’s trying to follow in his father’s footsteps. But before his father was possessed by that demon all he wanted to do was land Angel Island back on ground level where it originally was. And that’s still a pretty reasonable goal
But no I guess he thinks his father’s dream was to shoot the people who want everyone to abandon technology, even though that wasn’t even an idea anyone had in their head until Dimitri seemingly got killed and two dudes were like “man we should totally get rid of all our technology”
