What duties does a morale officer perform? My pet hypothesis is that it's somehow involved with psychotherapy, but I could be quite wrong.
“Psychotherapy is a rather… technical way of describing it.”
Tumblr media
“My duty is to make sure everyone is okay, Keda. That’s the easiest way to put it. Everyone comes with a story, especially the people on this ship, and everyone handles it all in different ways. I’m… like an outlet, kind of. I let people use me in order to release some of these pent up emotions. There really isn’t a trick or scientific way to it though. I just... help them talk.”

captainmarcuszeng:
“I trust that everything back in the ship is in working order?” Marcus asked as he watched the rest of the long boats carrying a few more crew members land. Of course the ship was probably fine, he had faith in the people that decided to stay behind enough to know that things would be in good hands. However, with unpredictability that was provided by Telvi’s wildlife, it didn’t hurt to ask. Marcus watched as Julian moved to steady a few of the long boats and followed suit before helping a few others out before grabbing several empty satchels inside the longboat “Follow me, we’ve found quite a few things and will need all hands on deck to help load up the long boats. Hope you lot brought lights and enjoy climbing,” Marcus said, the faintest chuckle leaving his lips as he remember the lengthy staircase he had to climb in order to get back up to the main chamber and back outside.
Tumblr media
“From all that I could tell, the ship will be back to working properly in no time. They all seemed pretty content with it before we left.” Julian would let the actual mechanics explain the in-depth contents towards the ship and it’s status. His attention is brought back to the Captain when he begun to speak once more, moving away from one of the mentioned long boats with a portable light now in hand and expectant look on his face. “I think I can handle the climb.” His legs were could handle a lot worse; and nothing truly tired him physically. Julian moves to follow Marcus now, eyes falling on the aftermath of everything, taking in the scenes as much as he can to put together his own scene of what had happened. “Do you know what they were?” Julian questions after a moment of silence, referring to the monsters that the crew were complaining about.

functionaledison:
Edison was in the middle of hauling what they had found inthe temple when they saw the long boats pull up at the entrance of the temple. They couldn’t help the resounding huff that echoed through them as they watchedthe others step off the boats and at their puzzled looks at the state of therest of the crew. It wasn’t their fault that the captain ordered them to staybehind, but it felt like it was to Edison. If they had been here then maybe, everything would have gone a lot smoother instead of the creatures ambushingthem and chasing them around like animals fit for the slaughter. “We got lucky, that’s what happened,” Edison said gruffly to the first person who had asked. It turned out to be Julian, who had joined around the same time as Edison. Thetwo of them didn’t speak much, not about anything outside what Julian needed todo his job properly, but even then, it was only a few hurried words. Edisondidn’t enjoy talking about their feelings. “We were chased around by monsterswhile everyone else got to enjoy themselves on the ship. That happened, too.”
Tumblr media
Edison’s gruff response was something that Julian had become rather accustomed to. The other never seemed very interested in striking up conversation with him, and whenever Julian tried to initiate it on his end -- he wasn’t met with much. It amused him more than frustrated him, the others stubbornness not something that he was surprised by. Feelings weren’t very fun for people with baggage - or for people who happened to have them, too. Julian wasn’t the biggest fan of talking about his own either, but he did have a job to do on the ship, and he’d continue to do it regardless of the reactions he got. Especially from Edison. “You lived though, yeah?” Julian replies easily, brow raising as a small smile quirks onto the edge of his lips. “And I wouldn’t say I enjoyed myself either.”
Julian moves to help bring some supplies forward to move onto the long boats, giving the other a curious expression as he does so. “What all was in there? I mean... besides the monsters.”

androidgen:
“It will be simple enough to repair,” she offered with a smile. Of course, that didn’t make it hurt an less in the meantime; but fortunately for her there was no risk of infection until her synthetic flesh could be patched.
Thoughts flashed back to the encounter with the creatures, the struggle to bring them down was far from a cake walk; but tough as they were to remove, extracting the jewels had been far less difficult in comparison. “Their hides were tough, but the removals seem to be going well enough. I think the current theory is that hopefully they will prevent the sirens from attacking us again, as evidence points to these creatures being what kept the sirens from coming too close to the island. Perhaps that’s why they worshipped them, now that I think about it. Most gods seem to have both a fearsome and benevolent side, so it would make sense.”
She paused realizing much was being said about what was going on in the temple, but not much about what had been going on with the Spectre. “And the ship? How did the repairs go?”
Tumblr media
He listens with interest to Genevieve’s explanation and analysis on what had happened -- he is also thankful he wasn’t there for the physical aspect of it all -- but the mentioning of worship and further history definitely peaked Julian’s interest. Enough so that he would definitely be taking a closer look at the creatures once he got the chance. “I hope that theory is true then.” He agrees with a small smile, honest in his words. The sirens were terrible; something he had never experienced before in his life and he would certainly help in any way he could to maintain distance between them. “I feel like everything looks to something as a greater power when it comes to nature. Not even physical power. Spiritual. Emotional. Just power. It’d make sense.”
Pausing at her questioning of the Spectre, Julian gave a sheepish expression, “Honestly? I have no idea what they did or how it went, but the ship seems to be doing better now. So I take that as a good sign.” The mechanics that had stayed behind were speaking a language that he could somewhat understand with his own personal knowledge, but when it came to advanced mechanical education regarding ships -- Julian was at a bit of a loss.
“I don’t think we will be stuck here.”

(From Edison) Do you think there is a difference between androids and cyborgs?
“Technically speaking… there is. Androids entire beings are made from machinery. Cyborgs are – well, they were human or alien. Their genetic makeup is still purely that, but with the help of that advanced technology, they aren’t entirely human or alien either. And when it comes to that sense, I like to think that they aren’t that different. They both aren’t entirely human, are they? Their lives and how they function depend on these mechanical enhancements that they both have. Androids just happen to have more than cyborgs. We’re... different. Yes. But at the same time, I’d like to think that we’re the only two that can truly understand eachother either, despite those differences.”

Do you feel as if the danger is worth being able to travel with the Spectre?
“I think that, although the Spectre is prone to seeking out danger because of what it is and the overall mutual goal that everyone seeks on here, that doesn’t necessarily make it a dangerous thing. Anything could be dangerous in certain circumstances, right? But that wasn’t your question. So – is it worth it all?”

“I guess I wouldn’t of joined and stuck around if it wasn’t.”

maxinenovak:
Unlike most of the expedition team, who milled silently about with exhaustion clearly in their limbs, Maxine was practically skipping about the expanse. She always rode a particular high after a fight, and today was no exception. She marched through the temple’s courtyard, chest puffed and grin wide with a beaming pride only she could hold, and gave the incoming longboats a wave in greeting as they arrived. Immediately, the crew got to work, loading gear and loot into the vessels– all except Maxine, of course, who was preoccupied with slapping the shoulders of her fellow mechanics and telling war stories to any nearby. Julian just so happened to be among these passerbys, and his question caused her to swivel on her heel and choose him as her new audience. Whether this was lucky or unfortunate was his to decide.
“Only one of the best battles we’ve seen in ages,” she replied as she sauntered up to his side, covered in blue blood and sand just like the rest of the temple raiders. She chucked her duffel bag onto the long boat he had arrived in, not even bothering to ask a proper place to put it, and gave his arm a few friendly claps, “It was glorious.”
Tumblr media
It didn’t surprise him when the blonde mechanic popped up into his field of vision with a pep in her step unlike the others. Where frowns and gruffs of exhaustion were passed around as everyone began to load their things into the long boats Julian just rode in on -- Maxine seem unaffected by whatever had happened. Despite the seriousness of the situation, Julian can’t help the small quirk of a smile that finds its way onto his mouth at her words. Although, he finds it hard to relate to, knowing he wouldn’t be mirroring Maxine’s own words and actions had he been apart of the crew that went into the temple. “I’m sure it was.” Julian agrees easily, humoring her and believing that she meant it wholeheartedly. She was always... a few steps in the other direction than everyone else. He had noticed it the moment he first met her. “You’re not hurt are you?” The blue blood coating her clothes made it hard to tell, and despite her positive attitude, he felt obligated to make sure.

“Monsters,” Genevieve explained, cutting right to the chase. “We were attacked while exploring a cavern beneath the temple, by creatures that might have once been worshiped by this culture.” A hand rose to a cut along her arm, as if presenting evidence and attempting to hold pain at bay all in the same gesture. “They gave up quite the fight, but I don’t believe there were any major injuries. Neither were our efforts fruitless, as there were jewels embedded in their chests. Of course the Captain has had us remove them to be taken to the ship. I’m not quite certain what their worth will be, but their rarity alone should fetch a pretty penny.”
Monster was never a word that settled well with him - and the emphasis on the ‘s’ at the end of it, hinting at more than one, only let the unease unfurl further in his stomach. Julian’s eyes fall to where Genevieve motions, taking in the injury on her arm with concern. Hopefully nothing about the monsters could effect them internally - simple cuts could turn severe depending on the creature. He knew of some whose saliva could kill you in seconds if you were bitten, and others whose claws held deadly poison that injected into it’s victims once attacked. “You need to have that looked at immediately once we get back.” He was sure it hurt; it looked painful. “Jewels, though? Embedded in their chests.” Julian begins after a moment, moving on from the conversation to comprehend everything else she had said. “Easy enough to get out?”

captainmarcuszeng:
Once Marcus had fired the flare and watch the red light shoot up into the Telvi night sky, he didn’t waste any time. He did a quick perimeter check to make sure that there were no plant creatures in the immediate area before briefly returning to check up on the rest of the crew in the cavern down below. From the looks of things, they had defeated the last of those creatures and no one was dead. There was an idle thought that he and his crew and managed to destroy what little of this civilization was left by destroying what they considered deities, judging from the carving he and Wren saw on the wall… Or at the very least the offspring of the original monster and he most certainly dwelled on it as he sat alone in that darkened courtyard. However, the thoughts were interrupted when the sound of small engines filled the air and the long boats he had called for, landed. “Mr. Sinclair, it’s good to see you,” Marcus said with a nod, momentarily forgetting the question and acting calm as ever even though there were splashes of blue blood splattered across his skin and red trench coat.
Tumblr media
The Captain is the first to respond to Julian’s voice -- and he can’t help but pause and take in the other’s state. The blue substance splattered across his being was blood. It causes a bit of unease, Julian wondering what the others could of been facing during their time within the temple. The lack of answer definitely hadn’t gone unnoticed either; Julian took that as a sign. Perhaps he didn’t need to know what happened just yet. Getting everyone together and safely back to the Spectre might be the better option for right now. “It’s good to see you too, Captain. “ Lips pressing together, he relents on the idea of repeating the question to the captain and instead, moves to help steady the long boats as they came in behind him, hand coming to hold them still as the others joined the rest of the crew. Turning to look once more towards Marcus, his brow raises in question. “What now, sir?”

Waiting was something that Julian had become more than accustomed to after joining the crew of the Spectre. Being their morale officer, he had to have the patience to wait in order to deal with them and actually do his job right. Although -- technically Julian wasn’t doing his job right in this moment. He hadn’t been since the Spectre took land and he was ordered to stay behind with the rest of the ship while a select group went ahead towards the temple. Minutes ticked by, quickly turning into an hour, and so forth. Julian was mentally counting the time, eyes not faltering from the skyline he had seen them disappear into until a bright flare is bursting across it. That was his queue. He joins the others in one of the long boats that take them to the other’s location near the temple, bright eyes staring carefully at the scenery around him before he’s stepping off the boat and onto the temple’s courtyard, a flash of concern morphing across his face at what he was seeing. “What happened?” He asks out loud.
