“Oh, absolutely,” he laughed with a wink. “I’m gonna crush the competition this year, I just know it.” He took another box out of the bag and strategically placed it next to the cash register. “I’ll give you both of these boxes for free if you leave that there and send everyone my way when they ask where you got them from. I got bills to pay, Jules.” His eyes went to the cardboard box of records curiously. “Is there anything good in there? Because if I lugged that all the way here just for it to be filled with shit I’m never doing this again.”
Tumblr media
Jules leaned against the counter, watching Levi slide the box of cookies next to the cash register with an amused shake of her head. The man never did stop the hustle, but she couldn’t blame him. It was hard to get out on top these days. “You know I don’t own the shop and my boss would probably kill me,” She laughed, sliding the box back toward Levi with a nudge of her fingers. Though she knew the box would most likely remain on the counter, playing the back-and-forth game was harmless entertainment that never ceased to brighten her day. Her attention quickly turned to the box of records, peeking in as she flipped through a few of the records. Jules hummed thoughtfully and offered, “Shit records don’t exist, just shit appreciation for them. Here, this one,” She pulled a Fleetwood Mac record from the box. “Overplayed, not hard to find, but always a good time.”

bradyemmerson‌:
It took Brady a few moments to right herself on the couch and get comfortable, by which point Jules was already pressing start on her controller. Tossing her snacks to the side, Brady rushed to get her controller into her hands, her kart taking off moments later. “You wait, one of these days I’m going to take on Mario Kart as my new competitive game and I’ll steal that title away from you,” she jokingly threatened, her body leaning in forward towards the television as the race carried on. It was hard for Brady not to get intensely competitive with games, her body language making her gravitate towards the screen as her eyes grew intense. There was a tension coursing through her arms as she gripped tightly to the controller, fingers gliding across the buttons with a practiced ease. Much to her dismay, racing games had never quite been her specialty. She wasn’t bad, but she could lose, and that never suited her well. “Fucker,” she grumbled as a shell took her kart out off an edge, feet tapping impatiently for it to reset her. “Why do I ever agree to play this garbage, I’m just embarrassing myself at this point.”
Tumblr media
Jules was always one of those players who would for sure be standing by the end of the race, tilting her remote in the direction the wanted to go as though that would help her steer, shrieking incoherently at the screen and there was no loss of that in the current moment. Although she hadn’t yet gotten to the standing part, noises that couldn’t quite me considered words were already loudly spilling out of her mouth, a loud cheer echoing through the room when a shell took Brady off of a cliff, giving her a chance to slide into second place. Jules was never able to sit still and focus, which was required in a lot of the games her sister played, so she was glad the woman indulged her in a little race every so often, even if the game was clearly below her usual standard. “Don’t be a sore loser, B,” She laughed, letting out a gasp which turned into a groan when her screen was splatter with ink. “Damn it!”

WHERE: Vinyl Frontier WHO: @julesxhensley
Levi pushed open the door with his hip and entered the shop with the large paper bag in his hand held up high. A cardboard box filled with records was tucked into his other arm. “Okay,  Jules, two things. I’ve got girl scout cookies for sale,” he called as he headed to the counter. He sat the bag down and shimmied the box out of his arm. “And a box of vinyls, but I don’t know if it’s any good or not. A buddy’s dad died and he wanted to get rid of them, so I thought you’d want to look through it to see if there’s something special.”
Tumblr media
The bell on the door chimed, catching Jules’ attention from her spot behind the counter where she had spent the last thirty minutes bouncing a rubber ball from the gumball machine against the window, her hands needing something to focus on after she had re-organized the records on the floor at least a solid eight times that week. Her mind already longed for the moment she was able to go home and sit behind her drumset when a man’s voice interrupted her thoughts. “Levi!” Jules grinned, eyes lighting up at the box of records her set down in front of her. But first, she turned her attention to the paper bag, opening it to sift through the contents. “Finally working on that Most Cookie Sales badge?” She teased, picking out a box of her favorites, Savannah Smiles, and deciding not to question where exactly Levi had gotten the cookies from. It wasn’t the most questionable exchange she has ever had, after all.

“Uh excuse me, can I speak to the manager?” Ángel spoke in his best “karen” voice as he stepped into the record shop and spotted his sister in one of the aisles, laughing as he held up a bag of food. “I brought you lunch, have you eaten today?” Every day he tried to see his siblings at least once to make sure they were doing alright and he enjoyed any time he got to see Jules at work and listen to whatever album she was obsessing over that week or that day. “I also lowkey need your help finding the right record for someone. Something that says, ‘I know you want to slap me but do you wanna go on a date?’ Think you got anything for that?” He set the food on the counter and opened his arms wide with an even wider smile. “Happy hump day, J. How’s your day going?”
Tumblr media
Jules loved her job, there was no doubt about it. Drumming was her true passion, but it didn’t hurt that was was able to snag first grabs at any rare classic rock albums that came through the doors. Sometimes, when the shop was empty, she was able to get lost in the aisles, restocking records that customers had misplaced, finding a bit of solace in the middle of her otherwise chaotically loud life. When a laugh rang through the store, Jules almost groaned in disappointment... that was until she recognized  Ángel’s voice. Her almost-groan turned into an amused grin. “How’d you know that’s exactly what I needed,” She teased, eyeing the bag of food he had brought with him. Of course, she hadn’t eaten yet. Her ability to function as an actual adult and pack a lunch was a concept she hadn’t managed to grasp. “Ah, yes, the ulterior motive. Jesus,  Ángel, what have you gotten yourself into now?” Jules threw a curious glance his way, setting the album she had been holding back into it’s rightful spot. “It’s a lot better now that my big bro’s here to save the day. Yours? Y’know, minus the whole... slapping date thing...?”

After running through the first bag of Doritos, Brady was searching through the cabinets in the kitchen for whatever hidden goodies she could find. No matter how old the siblings had gotten, their mothers still kept the pantry stocked with food for them to come home to, which they often did. It was a place where they all felt completely at ease, able to be themselves and not worry about the outside world. “Yeah, yeah, cheese puffs,” she called back out, grabbing the tub when she saw them. Her lips curled to a smile, shaking her head as she loaded up on several other snacks. “Go ahead, loser. I can catch up if you need yourself a headstart to win,” she teased, making her way back to the couch to toss all of the snacks between them. Plopping herself back down, Brady took one of the bags of chips for herself, tucking it next to her side for prime snacking position. She kicked her feet up onto the coffee table and grabbed her own Switch controller, snuggling back into the couch. “Alright, let’s go bitch. I need a win this week and kicking your ass at Mario Kart? Always a favorite.”
Tumblr media
Even with kids well into adulthood, their moms’ house always seemed to have a never-ending shelf full of snacks, one that was diminished more times than Jules could even remember when she had lived in the house. Doritos, cheese puffs, Corn Nuts, Sour Patch Kids, if it could give you a lifelong battle with your blood pressure and/or sugar levels, they ate it. Jules, especially, had been jokingly compared to a garbage disposal on more than one occasion by the members of the family. She felt the snacks being tossed on the couch beside her and she quickly sat up from the position she had been hanging in, fully interested in the selection that Brady had chosen. Surprisingly forgoing the cheese puffs for a pack of skittles instead, she snorted and looked toward her sister. “Oh please,” Jules laughed with a roll of her eyes, a common occurrence around the brunette. “We both know that I put all of my very small nerd allowance into being the best at Mario Kart, so I’m totally coming for you, you won’t even know what-,” She stopped short, pressing start on her controller as the bag of skittles lay forgotten beside her. “- hit you and go!”

emily-duncan‌:
A new shipment of dice had come in only an hour earlier and Emily had been like a kid in a candy store. It was no secret to her group and the viewers of the stream that she was a shameless dice hoarder so it was both a blessing and a curse when new sets came in. Like the true goblin she was, she sat behind the counter with the box in her lap, picking through the colors she liked best and setting them aside. She hadn’t even noticed the bell above the door to signal a customer. Even Halpert snoozed undisturbed at her feet.
It wasn’t until Jules was hopping up on the counter that Emily realized she wasn’t alone. She jumped, startled, and slipped the box off her lap in one swift movement as if she’d been caught doing something she shouldn’t. “You say that like it’s a bad thing,” she answered with a grin. Halpert was awake then, tail wagging as he came around the counter to greet Jules. Emily leaned against the counter Jules had made herself comfortable on and rested on her elbows. “Brady isn’t here, it’s just me and that slobbery lug. Sorry to disappoint you.”
Tumblr media
Jules instantly snorted at Emily’s defense, rolling her eyes as she always ended up doing shortly into any moment with the woman. Of course it wasn’t a bad thing, there was a reason she continued to come up with reasons to visit the shop, to hang out with her sister and her nerd friends. It was... kind of cute, the passion they had for their hobby, even if it was the most extreme amount of dorkiness Jules had ever seen in a room before. An amused smile graced her expression at Emily’s kid-caught-doing-something-they-shouldn’t moment. Nerd.
“Hal! The true reason I keep coming back here,” Jules teased, patting her thighs to encourage the dog meet her at her level, eager to give him the head scratches and attention he deserved. As much as she loved dogs, she long since realized owning a dog herself would go just as well as, if not worse than, the one time she owned a hamster when she was a teenager. Her life just wasn’t made for the sole responsibility of an animal - but, that was fine with her. All the more reason to find reasons to stop into Natural Twenty. “You say that as though I’m disappointed with what I see. You do have the cutest dog in town, after all.”

“Bring me the cheese puffs, loser!” Jules called from her position which was currently halfway upside down on the couch of their mothers’ house, Switch controller in hand as the MarioKart theme played on the tv in front of her. It wasn’t uncommon to find one or more fully grown Emmerson kid hanging at the house they found their home in, it was still a safe space after all, their mothers had made sure of that. Especially for Jules. She couldn’t recall a place she had felt safer in than that of Jan and Dawn Emmerson, women she eventually, as she reached adulthood herself, found comfort in calling mom. How could she not, when they had been there for her in every way, shape, and form that her own mother hadn’t? “I’m pressing start if you’re not back in ten... nine... eight...” Jules began counting down obnoxiously, although teasing nonetheless. Time with Brady was never unappreciated. Despite their very clear differences, they had always been close, and she never missed an opportunity to best her sister at the one and only game she was actually good at.

location: natural twenty status: closed for @emily-duncan
Jules often found herself wondering into Natural Twenty in search of her sister, a shop she would never set foot in otherwise. It lacked the edginess that she found herself drawn to, instead, everything in the shop seemed too detailed, too soft, too breakable. It was a hobby her sister had that she respected, but she couldn’t deny that it was a little bit on the nerdy side, and never missed an opportunity to tease Brady or her sister’s friends about it. Jules lifted her left hand out of the pocket of her black leather jacket and pressed on the door, the metal giving way to a shop full of... things Jules could find herself not caring less about. Give her a controller and a MarioKart tournament and she was more than willing to kick anyone’s ass, but any game that required more focus than that she was already checked out of.
Still, it was cute how her sister and her friends cared so much about their games, said friends were also kind of cute on their own, but she ignored that thought in favor of browsing over the shelves of the store. She saw the eyes Brady and Emily made at each other, whether they realized it or not, and she wasn’t about to interrupt whatever was going on there. Her own gaze recognized the woman by the counter, Emily of course, but her sister was nowhere in sight. Well, if her sister was too busy for her to bother, her sister’s bestie would have to do. “What’s up, nerd,” Jules loudly greeted, making her presence known as she pulled herself into a sitting position on the counter, leaning toward Emily with a grin.

Name: Jules Hensley Emmerson. Gender/Pronouns: Female, She/Her. Date of Birth: September 17th, 1993 Age: 26. Hometown: Portland, Oregon. Length of time in Redwood Bay: Thirteen Years. Neighborhood: McLoughlin Park. Occupation: Employee of The Vinyl Frontier/Drummer. Faceclaim: Melissa Roxburgh.
hello hello my fools, my clowns, my fello neighbors of Redwood Bay, it is i, the ultimate clown, back with a third lil bean?? i’m a sucker, who allowed me to have a computer. anyway, here’s your intro for the long-awaited jules, FAIR WARNING she does have some trigger warnings that i’m going to try to ungracefully gloss over, which go slightly more in depth in her bio which can be found HERE. and also, she’s got a nifty lil connections page HERE. pls love her or twas all for naught.
{trigger warning: slight mention of childhood sexual abuse which will be kept vague here and never, ever mentioned on the dash, alcoholism, death, prison)
Starting in the beginning of Jules’ life on an obnoxiously warm September night, born Julep Hensley Vause, to a mother, an older brother, and a step-father whom she inherited the last name from. Her mother was a single mother before she met the dude who became Jules’ step-father, going at it alone with just her son and another baby on the way. The slightly better trailer in the slightly better area of Portland caught Jules’ mom’s attention and she uhauled her way into this dude’s home.
Her step-father, Richie, wasn’t the best kind of dude. He did, after all, meet her mom in a bar, ordering his millionth mint julep despite his breath already reeking of alcohol. He only cared about a few things in his life; his recliner, his beers, and his three t-shirts. He was grimy, but he worked and he paid the bills and it was the relief that Jules’ mother needed.
This is where we insert the childhood sexual abuse trigger warning.
The inappropriate attention from her step-father began when Jules was three and lasted until she was seven, never passing the point of inappropriate touching, but it was something she struggled for years to understand.
When she was six, her mother went to the hospital and never came back. Jules would later find out that it was liver failure that did her in. Life was never the same after that and she found herself subjected to more boldness from her step-father, until he crossed paths with her older brother one night. A night which ended in both the teenager and their step-father being arrested for aggravated assault, the latter of which then was charged with possession of images he shouldn’t have been in possession of and sentenced to a time in prison that was cut short when he was murdered in the prison yard just a year later.
End CSA trigger warning.
Her older brother was dealt a bad hand, while what he did was in defense of Jules, he was sent to Juvie until he could be charged as an adult, and then was moved to prison himself for the assault. Just was then tossed into the foster care system.
She spent the next six years tossed through the system, discovering drumming as a way to release the built up anger that she struggled to contain over her past that hadn’t been in her control at all and exploring her sexuality and preteen rebellion until she landed on the doorstep of the Emmersons at the age of thirteen.
They ended up adopting Jules, who then dropped the last name she had inherited from her step-father so quickly in exchange for the last name of Emmerson, although she now just goes by her first and middle, liking the edginess of it.
She also currently works at The Vinyl Frontier as a day job to pay the bills while she knocks off with a garage band at night and on weekends, still finding the most joy while beating on a set of now-worn drums while blasting some old classic rock song much to the neighborhoods dismay.
