i love how castles are like, a fairytale staple and princesses live in them now. those were military installations do you think in 4000 years the irradiated mice that inherit our world will tell stories about princesses living on aircraft carriers

This is a very large prompt (it is an idea I had for a fic but never executed) (I think you would execute it better than I could)
A plot: Young hosts a party on Destiny and has to effectively socialise. Brody ends up giving him relationship advice.
B plot: Chloe gets drunk and Wray tries to take her back to her quarters, but they get lost
C: Rush eats an ungodly amount of tomatoes in the hydroponics bay and has to hide the evidence (Eli eventually becomes involved) (Rush is completely sober the entire time)
Bonus points if the plots comically intersect.
this is an EXCELLENT plot idea but can you send it over to main 😭 but i love this. the more ideas you throw in here the better

#idk if ai generated but it’s still cute ah well
it’s not at all!! these are the transparencies from the paint-over process layers - first the cutout of the rendered models (both of which I made by hand some months ago) and then the paintover copy of it which I had to do in clip studio to match the brushstroke style. the painted version of it then got put over the starry night pic!
“Beautiful night,” observed Crowley. “Very starry,” said Aziraphale, helpfully. “Get out of the way, you’re ruining my shot,” said Van Gogh.

nailed it re: lack of insight on why the characters are doing what they do; that’s why it failed to be compelling, despite what it was trying to accomplish. I personally feel that the whole framing for murder/leaving rush on the planet thing was horribly mishandled for a great number of reasons, and that starts with the fact that there’s a super obvious, super compelling reason that would’ve incited rush to do such a thing aside from the writers being like “he’s scheming... and maybe evil? so he should do something bad now!”. to me, the clear choice is that he felt young was irresponsible for mishandling spencer’s obvious withdrawal symptoms (which rush himself went through only a few episodes before!) and I think that would make him deeply resentful and question young’s leadership. but of course the show did not bother to think of this as far as I’m aware. the whole thing’s just kind of bad.
there were a couple of huge tonal shifts in SGU’s writing, imo, and the biggest one to me is 2x07. blessedly, in my opinion, they stuck with Reasonable Young really consistently following that episode. there’s a pretty great one coming up where he and rush agree to support and back each other up in a difficult situation where rush needs to address the rest of the destiny crew. there’s something so oddly soothing about the way they interact, with young being the stable grounding force that cancels out rush’s unreliably erratic nature. it makes the rest of young’s characterization feel wildly, incredibly unnecessary - the violence is just so antithetical to Young 2.0 - but you’re totally right that it’s OOC for Young 1.0. :\
as hard as it was to watch, I did really like the young and riley plot, as well as young’s entire battle with grief and depression and pulling himself out of that pit of misery with support and assistance. s2 did a much better job of handling and portraying everyone’s ethical struggles and quandaries, and s2 young is a better character in every imaginable respect. s1′s problem is that they didn’t bother to get into what any of this ACTUALLY MEANS, they just presented a new problem every week and were like “oh look at the drama! look at these people behaving badly!” and never bothered to truly dig deep into what they were feeling that made them act this way. I suspect it’s because the writers didn’t fucking know lol.
rush is a black box because he was written by a writer’s room split in different directions about him, i would stake my life on this. there was someone there who despised him and someone there who loved him and everyone else was probably just like ??? what do we do with this guy? and ultimately they picked ideas out of a hat.
unfortunately, i am very much like rush so i have a reasonable amount of insight into why he’s Like This. a lot of it has to do with his single-minded devotion to The Goal that he’s set his sights on accomplishing, which is usually something insane that nobody else would think of doing (mood!) and his frustration with how everybody else either doesn’t get it or actively tries to impede the goal (less of a mood, but has still happened!) so he just has this feeling of desperately soldiering through it all himself that manifests in a lot of bitterness towards everyone and everything else. as soon as a bit of kindness and care is extended towards him, this attitude lessens substantially and instead transforms into a more of an endearingly grumpy kind of default state, but he spends most of SGU as his worst self, unfortunately.
telford is the one I’ve always struggled with, although I did finally crack open what his whole deal is (I think). his absurdly inconsistent personality. is more interesting if it’s a genuine consequence of the brainwashing psychological trauma. this is the watsonian answer. the doylist answer is it’s because the writers fucking sucked shit lmao they did not know who that man is
Fucking mood
#full disclosure i JUST wrote a fic about the telford psychological trauma thing with rush so i have a lot of thoughts about him#i think he should get to heal and figure out who he is again#i don't like him but this premise is making me like him#sg talk#stargate#stargate universe#sgu#man this is a long post

judgeverse:
to be fair, I thought she did a pretty solid job BUT the bar is pretty low for SGU, out of necessity. I think it’s fair to expect women to be better at handling a lot of topics tbh – not necessarily that they’ll be better universally, but… there’s a certain sort of awareness that they’re likelier to have than male writers. I know there’s at least one other woman-written ep - I believe it’s the Camille and Greer one that’s somewhere down the line mid-s2. but overall, the writers room was notoriously light on women, and it shows
very true re: tok'ra as well. stargate liked to play fast and loose with basically all of these topics (also, it bothers me that we never got more exploration of consensual host and symbiote situations - there was untapped material there!) but I guess they think it’s different if you’re not IN the body… but also… everyone else still knows what happened :| it just feels very uncool, and yes, huge problems in SGU with insufficient examination of moral issues, especially for a show that seemed to pride itself on making the effort but kinda… didn’t?
I’m watching SGA for the first time right now!!! I’m pretty sure I watched todd’s first ep recently? (the one where kolya captures shepard, right?) so far feeling very positive about him but deeply disappointed to hear the show’s going to take that angle on him. one of my biggest impressions of atlantis is “more war crimes? REALLY?” so… I guess that’s just gonna keep getting worse, huh
I will admit I enjoyed some elements of the episode, mostly for rush murdering simeon via space dinosaur stampede (and scott making the effort to be kind to rush, but mostly also the space dinosaurs) but ginn and amanda were both DEEPLY WRONGED and it pisses me off. also, it’s going to get worse with amanda in 2x15 so be warned about that
Lmao murdering someone with a stampede is my favorite scene in The Jungle Book that they always leave out of every movie and I was literally thinking, If you give me this, I will forgive your many crimes… 🤣❤ I also loved Greer’s, “Can we BBQ it?” line, and just the hopeful yearning in his voice.
“More war crimes!!😃” Is very much the vibe of SGA, yes. That is Todd’s first episode! Sorry I thought you’d seen it so I’ll clarify: Todd is awesome in s4 through mid-s5, it’s not until late s5 where there’s a distinct lack of forward momentum as far as any development in his relationship with Atlantis that I personally find frustrating, but he has many awesome episodes before that.
lol, greer. god I love greer. he does get his bbq later (I think it’s The Hunt) and he damn well deserves it
I actually saw SGU BEFORE atlantis, I’ve watched all of SG1 and all of SGU exactly once lol (and for ironic reasons - I was concerned SGA would brainrot me, so opted for SGU first.... nope, so far nobody, but rush got me without any warning). slowly working my way through all of stargate one ep a day since last year. good times. so far SGA is, unfortunately, ranking 3 out of 3 in my favorites tier (sorry) but it kinda goes back and forth with SGU for the 2nd vs 3rd place, for what it’s worth. I really did like todd’s intro ep; I also am partial to michael, so i don’t know where they’re going with him, but I’m just a sucker for the “these are our bad guys... and then here’s one of them that’s Not Like The Others” trope (hello, ba’al). i’m a gullible sap for that type, in the worst way
Fucking mood
