Blackwaters Film Trailer from Chad Brown on Vimeo.
Blackwater encompasses the power of five Black men whose paths have been challenged with loss, defeat, fear, and pain by life’s ups and downs and social injustice challenges black men and black boys face every day. They have fallen into an “endangered species”, only surviving day to day. Through surviving life’s trials, each man has found grace and success in the outdoors, healed and mended by nature’s medicine to the soul, embracing the art of fly fishing and building brotherhood. Blackwater is an expedition of a journey in the Gates Of The Arctic Circle National Park, adventure, a vision quest, and a fly fishing adventure that surpasses the color of their own skin connecting to the fundamentals of nature’s, the poetry of life, and prosperous joy. Like indigenous communities, they find self-fulfillment in being outdoors. They find their own representation, and hold space for everyone, especially inspiring young Black boys. It is a dual survival between black boys who can not make the connection to a black man in the outdoors due to lack of representation and black men finding representation in wild spaces to call their own. Hopefully, these youths can see themselves, and be inspired to embark on their own journeys into the outdoors. The concept is a tactically crafted story in dialogue and adventure, with emphasis on dismantling the fear for BIPOC and inspiring BIPOC to pursue their journey in the outdoors and uplift black boys’ lives in green spaces. This story is told in 5 directions; 5 lives and 5 perspectives wrap into a heavy dialogue discussion in nature tackling the heavy topics of masculinity attempting to answer questions such as “ Where do I as a black man fit in nature?” and “ How do we hold space in nature as anglers paving the road for our next generation of young men so they could see us and know this space is for them just as much as for everyone?”

Episode 9: America’s Forests in the Arkansas Delta from America's Forests with Chuck on Vimeo.
On this episode of America’s Forests, join host Chuck Leavell for a special celebration of Black music in Helena, Arkansas, home of the Delta Blues. Chuck jams with local blues musicians before checking out the primordial swamps of tupelo and bald cypress of Arkansas’ Big Woods and the Ouachita National Forest, where red-cockaded woodpeckers are triumphantly returning.
America’s Forests captures the breadth of our nation’s woodlands – both public and private. We feature different stories that demonstrate how #forest habitats are to the well-being and economic health of communities across the country. In this series, we present individuals who embody this passion for the woods, from architects to artists, from climbers to carpenters, and from #foresters to #treefarmers.
We celebrate US forests and to advocate for their constructive management, we propose a communications campaign centered on a broadcast television documentary series for PBS and multi-faceted social media outreach.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH from Stan Evans Photography on Vimeo.
America continuously underestimates the determination and resilience of Black people. i.e. - If you want something done right do it yourself.
Outdoor marketing has been failing people of color for years and in the wake of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery I would say brands had an awakening (they aren’t quite woke yet) and just realized the danger and fears many people of color have just venturing into the outdoors. Everyone wants to solve the problem, instantaneously but it's been here for years and it’s not going to be solved overnight. But it's a problem I've been thinking about most of my life and last year pre Ahmaud, pre George, pre Breanna I went out and made my own video because sometimes when you are in it, you see things clearly that others can’t see. I made a video of an over the hill Black snowboard photographer that hadn’t ridden in 3 years (I wrecked my ankle in a moto accident and this was my first day back) on a borrowed board and bindings and cranked this content out in 2 days to show what some companies have such a hard time grasping…. Black people just want to see people that look like us in the outdoors. Videos, photos, concepts and creative direction - by us for us. (don’t worry you can enjoy it too just like rap music) It's time for Brands to be better. Respect the culture, respect the customer. Be curious. We aren’t just tokens, directives or press releases…. We’re human beings….

In My Mother's Memory
In My Mother’s Memory
Photo by Eric Larson After 5 days on the ice I discovered we had WiFi. Camped on the frozen expanse of Lake Winnipeg my tentmates and I sat eating dinner in the light of our headlamps. Comfortable in each other’s company we settled into the quiet routine of passing the time before bed reading or listening to music. With a steaming cup of rehydrated chili in one hand, I thumbed through a series of…

The Henson Obsession Project
Even after many years of adventure travel I still agonize over the purchase of a new piece of equipment. With my finger hovering over the “buy now” button at the Baffin.com web site, I weighed the prospects of full commitment to this latest project. The outlay of serious cash for a pair of three-pin ski boots was the first step in putting together an ambitious kit capable of withstanding the…

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, What you can do to help
There’s a moment in public speaking when you know you’ve got them. Someone in the back of the room shakes their head.  Tongues click with disgust. Oh the injustice! A sharp intake of breath from the third row sets the hook as others gasp, right on cue. A grown man wipes a tear from his eye.  Then, at the end, there’s the question I’m so often asked: “What can we do to help?” Over much of the last…

2017 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Tour Matted Photographs
The 2017 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree has arrived in Washington D.C.! After a long journey of more than 3,000 miles, this 79-foot Engelmann Spurce was delivered by members of the U.S. Forest Service to the grounds of the United States Capitol where it will be decorated and set alight on December 6, 2017. In partnership with the non-profit Choose Outdoors, photojournalist James Edward Mills of the…

Honor Thy Sawyer
By his own admission, Montana sawyer, Pete Tallmadge thought surely someone else would be a  better choice for the job. “When Kirsten Kaiser the 3 Rivers District Ranger called and asked if I would consider being the sawyer for the 2017 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, I just about said ‘no’,” he told a crowd of neighbors, friends and family near his home in Troy, Montana. “To tell you the truth, I…

Honor Thy Sawyer from The Joy Trip Project on Vimeo.
Very early in the 2017 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Tour our team paid a visit to Troy, Montana. There Three Rivers District Ranger Kirsten Kaiser greeted a large crowd with details on the 79-foot Engelmann Spruce that was harvested nearby in the Kootenai National Forest. She introduced Pete Tallmadge, a 5th generation Montana Sawyer who, felled the tree and offered a few humble yet inspiring words on what this tree means to him and his community. #CapitolChristmasTree

SHIFT: The Joyful Transfer of Power
SHIFT: The Joyful Transfer of Power
On the last night of the SHIFT Festival in Jackson, Wyoming the organizers hosted an after-party at the Organic Lotus Restaurant. By 1:AM a steady beat of house music still roused a group of at least 30 Millennials to dance away the night well into the morning. Damp with sweat I sidled over to the bar for a drink of water. Even after a double hip replacement it doesn’t take much to get this aging…

The Joyful Embarrassment of Excellent Choices
The Joyful Embarrassment of Excellent Choices
Much of the past weekend I spent happily lamenting an embarrassment of excellent choices. It seemed that the third week of October 2017 was an exceptionally good moment in time to explore, discuss and celebrate the emergence of diversity within the environmental conservation movement. There were at least four events across the country that brought together people of color to share their efforts…
