The Kermis (funfair), originated from the word kerKmis, used to be a religious celebration during the Middle Ages. Later, there were extra activities added to the celebration, such as a meat inspection (vleeskeuring) provided by the local butcher. Next to the actual meat tasting, most people would meet (or cheat on) their partners on the Kermis since it was the only place to go ‘out’ for poorer residents untill about 1900.
