“Pardon me…” Curie hoped she wasn’t being bothersome, sometimes people in bars wanted to be left alone after all. “I just received the most perplexing message on my mobile device, and I wonder if there is something I am missing? My colleague has asked me to, ‘Spill the tea on Taylor.’“ Curie turned her phone and held it out so they could get a good look at the message as well. “Why would they think I was capable of such cruelty? Surely that would burn her.”
Tumblr media
“Oh my.” He said with a frown as he looked at the rather strange message on her phone. “That is concerning. I’m afraid since I don’t know you, the sender, or Taylor I really wouldn’t know if you were missing something or not.” He said as he tilted his head slightly and then looked at the woman. “I would ignore it or block the number if I were you. No use for such malice.”

“i’ve found it’s been rather quiet recently, don’t you think? i find it odd. the summers are growing much nicer now, so you would think that you would see many people running and walking about.”
Tumblr media
“I agree, it is odd. It has been rather hot lately too that may be the reasoning. It can get unbearable, especially in the middle of the day.”

“ do you … “ they pause. “ do you smell that ? “ nose wrinkles. “ smells like somethin’ is burning. you’re not cooking something , are you ? “
“Yeah, I-I am . . . Gosh, I really should just give up.” He laughed as he turned off the stove and shook his head. “I’ve been trying to be a better cook and take on more complicated recipes but I’m really quite terrible.”

“Don’t worry about it, it’s not bad advice, but sometimes you’ve got a find a way to survive, even if it means eating off of the floor.” Her family has scoured for food before, they had to live somehow. “You’re good…right now, but you’re lucky that you get to so easily care for people, I once was told to close my heart, I didn’t listen and it didn’t end well.” Her tone is bitter as she thinks of Maven.
Tumblr media
He nodded, knowing that she was right. He was glad that he got to care for people. It wasn’t particularly easy but he knew that sometimes, such things could be luxuries. He tried his best to remain grateful for all he had and be respectful and kind to those he passed. “I’m sorry to hear that.” He said sincerely, hoping that he didn’t sound like he was pitying her. He wasn’t. He didn’t know what she was referring to but he could tell it was something painful based on her tone. “I don’t know what you’re referring to but I can understand in a small way. With my job I have to keep myself at a distance, people don’t survive in my field if they get attached to every patient they see. I’ve made the mistake a few times and it never ends well. Having said that, guarding your heart is a good thing but also incredibly lonely if it’s closed off to everyone, even good people in good circumstances. It’s safe sometimes to let that guard down.”

Diaval stopped what he was about to do, turning to look at the man who called out. Very slowly and pointedly, he took the chip he’d dropped and picked up again, and placed it in his mouth, not once breaking eye contact. He was a bird, all of his food came in contact with the ground at one point. He wasn’t afraid of a little dirt.
Tumblr media
Joly sighed softly and offered the gentleman a small, apologetic smile. He knew the other man had done it partially to spite him by his direct gaze but he also knew he had a tendency to be paranoid. "sorry."

“Ah. Yes.” he said, nodding. He did need to eat after all. And he supposed, since he was an angel inhabiting a human body, he could probably just eat what he wanted. But, like the Catholics, he did feel guilt. “It’s nice to meet you to, Joly. Are you some sort of medical professional?” he asked, taking out a tuna salad sandwich.
Tumblr media
“Oui, but I’m still an intern. Surgical.” He answered modestly as he adjusted his glasses. For somebody with such a fear of disease, it was truly an ironic profession for him to go into, but equally fitting. He was terrified of illness so for him, it made perfect sense to treat those unfortunate enough to be sick. “What do you do, if you don’t mind me asking?”

Looking down at the little grain that had fallen onto the pavement, Mare’s dark eyes glare over at the other as she blinks. “I mean, I wasn’t planning on eating it in the first place, but thanks for the advice.” Her tone is bitter as she turns back over to the duck, extending out her hand for the other to eat the rest of the grains. “Why do you worry about a stranger?”
Tumblr media
“Oh, right. My apologies. Sorry.” He said sincerely. Her question somewhat surprised him, although he understood not everyone felt the same impulses as he did. “Because I care about people. It makes me happy to help people, even if I sometimes only manage to annoy them.”

“I think it is true,” Katniss answered, humored by the man’s expression. He really was greatly concerned by things Katniss never gave much of any thought to. Growing up in the place she had likely was the cause of the difference between her and the man she was taunting and even as her smirk turned into a softer smile, she was already trying to think of something less mean spirited to say. “I think it’s a recommendation to wash the sanitizer off after every four applications, so it takes a while. That’s something positive!” At the man’s words that followed however, Katniss’ smile was replaced with a confused frown. “Yeah but… you’re out in nature now. The way you’re speaking, it’s as though being anywhere is going to be the very death of a person. I know things aren’t as advanced as they will be, but it’s not that bad, I promise. And you can trust my promise. I have lived through so many threats to my life you likely can’t imagine, otherwise, we wouldn’t be talking right now. A walking, talking promise that this world is safer than you think.” Not willing to accept any excuses, Katniss offered a compromise. “How about you start off with archery indoors? In a training facility. It’s cleaner, and you can get comfortable with the equipment. I guarantee you’ll want to try it outdoors in no time. It’s more freeing.”
Joly nodded as he thought it over, certain he washed his hands enough that it wouldn’t become a problem. He would still do some research later that night, he decided. For the time being, he wouldn’t use the hand sanitizer and would rather make more trips to the sink than usual, at least until he had a definitive answer on its effectiveness. “Yes, it is. Thank you.” He smiled at her and then shook his head. He knew that he was perhaps unreasonable in his anxieties, he knew logically that he was more careful than he needed to be, but logic didn’t bear much weight against the phobia he had. No, even with his extensive knowledge, his mind was wired towards unlikely what ifs, even if he was aware that they were indeed, unlikely. “I know it won’t be the death of me, I am a scientist so I can think rationally about these things.’
“I just . . . While I can see rationally that I will likely be fine, I can also see and have seen with my own eyes, in my field, that things that shouldn’t do happen, and that people do fall ill and die from things that could have been prevented that weren’t. I just know there are better things I could be doing, better risks are worth taking for me. I risk my health every day by going to work where disease is incredibly prevalent, it’s not uncommon for medical personnel to contract illnesses of their patients, it happens and it’s only a mistake away most of the time. Even excluding that, the hours I work are a health risk by themselves. But that’s a risk I’ve measured and contemplated, and I’ve decided it’s worth it. That risk holds value and it makes me a happier man because it helps others.”

“Until July eleventh.” he said with a sigh, but managed a smile, “But, I have been enjoying battered fish and fries on most days. There are also a lot of vegan foods I have been enjoying, although I’m not sure I could give up honey. I quite like bees.” Since the man hadn’t left him - Castiel was aware that some people found him odd - he extended his hand, “Castiel.” he said, introducing himself.
Tumblr media
He smiled as he listened, suddenly deciding that he wouldn’t mind some fish himself although he didn’t voice that revelation. “Well, that doesn’t sound too bad. Better than a complete fast, certainly. Fully fasting is quite bad for your health but it seems you’re being rather conscious of it, I’m glad.” He took the other mans hand and shook it politely. “Joly. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“No, thanks. I’ve heard germs can stick to the sanitizing liquid once it’s been applied. Wouldn’t want to risk any illnesses; you know how it is.” Now she was blatantly trying to egg him on. He did seem a nice enough person and while Katniss couldn’t hold back a genuine smile, she might have been enjoying this far too much. “I’m Katniss. It’s nice to meet you, too.” Likewise unable to hold back her opinion, she added, “You really need to get your hands in some dirt sometime though. It’s really not going to hurt you.” And she believed what she said, feeling she was living proof that dirt was the least of the world’s causes of illness. “You ever tried your hand at archery? It’s a great way to become acquainted with nature. I can’t promise it’ll be a slow introduction, but any start is better than none.”
Joly, paranoid as he was, suddenly appeared quite nervous over that. He used hand sanitizer all the time, it was everywhere in the hospital, could that be true? “I never heard that, that’s not true, right?” He asked worriedly. At her next suggestion, he made a face. Easy to say it couldn’t kill you if you didn’t know all the risks there were, he thought to himself. “N-no, I haven’t. Nature is lovely, don’t get me wrong it’s just . . . A very dirty place and lot’s of opportunity to get ill in it. I mean, there is a reason we don’t live in caves anymore!” He exclaimed. “You could get injured with no way to get quickly to a hospital, you could get a cut and it become infected, you could contract disease from pests, you could have an allergic reaction to a bug or a plant or any number of things, really. No, I like to remain in situations that can be more controlled than that, I’m afraid. I’m very susceptible to illness so I have to do my due diligence to avoid it.” He explained nervously. Of course, he was no more susceptible to illness than any other average person but he would not be convinced of that by anyone.

“Well, consider me not disappointed.” And she wasn’t. The reason he gave was actually rather interesting to the hunter, not to mention humorous. A person who saved others and a person who killed others meet. It almost sounded like one of those ‘walked into a bar’ jokes Katniss had heard far too many times since showing up in the past. “Are you sure you want to shake my hand,” Katniss added, moving her hand towards his almost tauntingly. “I did just touch food that had been on the ground.”
Joly seemed to seriously consider her question about whether or not he wanted to shake her hand. Truthfully, he didn’t like the idea but he thought it would be rude not to offer anyways, his manners often outweighing his anxieties, though not always. “Yeah, that’s fine.” He laughed and shook her hand politely, and quickly after, fished through his backpack and retrieved a travel sized hand sanitizer. He put some on his hands and began rubbing it in. “Oh, would you like some?” He offered.

“Why are you sorry? You’re just being honest. Can’t say that about most people so excuse me but I’m not accepting an apology from you about this.” Wiping her hands off on her jeans, she moved back over to the guy. “That’s because the mud is real. Nothing should go anywhere near the food in this place if they want to live. Just how into this microbe and germ stuff are you? I might be wrong but I’m getting the impression you must be one of the cleanest people in existence. I actually hope I don’t end up disappointed.”
“Oh!” He was relieved when he realized she wasn’t annoyed like he originally thought he had made her and laughed at the last thing she said. “Well, I have to scrub my hands several times a day for a full five minutes, legally.” He answered. “So rather interested. I’m a surgical intern.” He explained as he clasped his hands. Truthfully, Joly would scrub longer if it didn’t make his hands so raw for days after. “I’m Joly, by the way.” He introduced with an outstretched hand. “Since you won't accept apologies I’ll offer my thanks instead, for letting me lecture you.” He joked.

“I wasn’t going to eat it,” Katniss replied as she made her way past the guy that had gone into a rant of sorts about why eating what fell on the ground shouldn’t happen. “I was picking it up so I could throw it away. In this trash can. For public use. You don’t have to worry now. Unless you want to get into a debate about how that stuff is already on the food people eat and there’s really no reason to try and prevent what’s already done? Me? I’ve lived through worse. If eating some food is what kills me, well, there are worse ways to die.”
“I-I’m sorry.” He started, watching her with a worried gaze as she continued speaking. “Well, to some degree you’re right, it is, however; it’s also true that many more are on the ground because that is where we walk. You should look at some mud in a microscope sometime, it’s awful, and compare that to your food fresh out of the package, I can almost promise you there will be a drastic difference in the number of microbes you see in the mud.” He said before taking a deep breath. “Alas, you are likely right that it won’t kill you. I just would hate for anybody to catch a virus if I could have prevented it by saying something. It’s a common myth. Excuse me for making such a hasty assumption.”

“No, I wouldn’t mind at all. I’m actually headed to the elevator myself, you can follow me.” He offered with a welcoming smile. “You said you’re new here, when did you arrive?” He asked as he walked, making friendly conversation as he often did.

He laughed softly and nodded. “That’s good. Interesting pet to have, monsieur. I didn’t know coyotes could be tamed.”
