Filmmaking Principles in Instructional Design
8.2.2 Weeks 1-2 Project: Create an Instructional Video, Part 1
Create a Storyboard
The goal of this project was to create and work with a storyboard for an instructional video as a means of planning and communicating the compositions of shots, as well as the concepts, content, sequencing of information before beginning the process of the actual video production.
My Emily Wray RISE Model Self Evaluation:
REFLECT
I have to admit I am a novice when it comes to filmmaking, so knowing I had to create a storyboard first was a bit intimidating. A storyboard visually tells the story of what the film or video will be. Usually, storyboards are done in pencil, but I decided to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create the storyboard.
The instructor’s rubric explained clearly the expectations and with this project I learned some basic lighting principles as well as camera placement. I still have more to learn.
INQUIRE
To learn more about filmmaking principles and creating storyboards, I will use resources like Lynda.com and the internet to research the subject matter. I need to learn more about lighting, camera angles, and creating a story to portray on a video or a film.
SUGGEST
If I had more time I would try and create a somewhat professional storyboard with strategic camera angles and better lighting principles. I would also work on a better narration on my story and work on getting more shots for my video.
ELEVATE
Going forward I will learn more on creating storyboards, filmmaking principles and gathering the necessary equipment to complete the project. This experience has shown me I have a lot to learn and I need to be prepared, have enough time for camera shoots, and ensure I have the necessary equipment for the project. I also need to learn how to improvise when something goes wrong, as they say, the show must go on.
Final instructional video-based on this storyboard will be posted soon.

Mastery Journal Reflection - 6.2.2 Create an Interactive Quiz Project
Because I have already posted in my Tumblr journal my assignment from my prior class, I decided to post my project from my current class. This was last week’s assigned project.
6.2.2 Create an Interactive Quiz Project:
The goal of this project was to apply critical thinking and problem solving skills, while paying attention to details and demonstrating accuracy when coding using HTML, CSS, and AngularJS hooks.
These images are the end result of using HTML, CSS, and AngularJS hooks to create an interactive quiz.
The following is feedback I received from my instructor on my progress of using Adobe Dreamweaver to edit the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files to create an interactive quiz using Saturn as the subject matter:
6.2.2 Weeks 1–2 Mastery Learning Project: Create an Interactive Quiz
Hi Jose,
You provided some great reflections along the way! You have set a great example in what it means to persevere! Way to go! Your quiz works perfectly well, and you should be proud of how you worked out the bugs.
-Always proof before you post, looking for punctuation, grammatical and spelling errors; = -2pts;
Cheers,
Dr. Reo
6.2.2 Weeks 1–2 Mastery Learning Project
Hi Jose,
Your idea to "comment out" the unneeded part was brilliant thinking! That way, you still have the coding, but it won't affect what you are doing. Well said and well met! :-)
Cheers,
Dr. Reo
Coding is a new experience to me and this project has shown me that paying attention to detail and dedicating enough time is critical to the success of the end result of the project. I also learned that there are tools that can be used to test results throughout the project to ensure all of the coding done so far is working. I found Adobe Dreamweaver to be a great asset and user-friendly for a novice in HTML, CSS, and JacaScript coding like me.

Visual and Verbal Communication in Instructional Design Development Mastery Reflection Assignment
I am currently pursuing a Certificate in the Instructional Design and Technology Master’s program. My first of four courses for this certificate is Visual and Verbal Communication in Instructional Design.
The purpose of this course is to create effective and engaging instructional materials. And to accomplish this I must have a thorough understanding on visual and verbal communication skills by focusing on the subject matter, target audience, and using current technology. This course taught color, typography, and how using the right contrast type, and images can be a recipe for an engaging instructional design. Great information and techniques were provided by some designers via the Lynda.com tutorial. Designers like Ina Saltz, Mordy Golding, and Bill Shander.
The principles I learned in this course I will apply to my projects. One of my projects is a blog that focuses on sports, health, and fitness. Some of the visuals I will provide in my blog will be instructional videos and infographics. Techniques and lessons learned that I will apply to make a professional and engaging blog for my target audience to enjoy.
This course is part of my process in my quest to learn and master the art of an effective and engaging instructional designs. In Robert Greene’s book, Mastery, one of the strategies to attaining mastery is to transform myself though practice. The techniques I have learned so far in the Visual and Verbal Communication in Instructional Design class I will practice and put in place on future projects.
Here are some examples of images I had to create and/or modify as part of my assignments:
I designed the types on the Grand Canyon images. The Renewable Energy infographic was originally created by Mordy Golding; I made some modifications as part of my assignment.

Internet and The Law Mastery Reflection Assignment
The goals I have set for the Internet and the Law class was to understand the laws as it pertains to the Internet, trademarks, copyrights, intellectual property and to use this knowledge to protect my brand, blog, and any organization I am a part of.
The Internet and the Law class taught me the basic legal concepts such as jurisdiction and the limits of copyright law. I also learned how to create e-mail campaigns in accordance with the CAN-SPAM Act. I learned the importance of privacy policies and how to create these types of policies. The class also highlighted the importance of privacy rights and what challenged privacy rights have in this modern age and social media age we currently live in.
The Internet and the Law class taught me, as a blogger, the risks I take by not being careful on the contents of my blog. I learned about my rights and responsibilities as a blogger and the legal aspects of using another person’s image or likeness. I learned the importance of analyzing terms and agreements to better understand a website I am visiting or supporting.
A few strategies I mentioned I would execute to better understand the internet and the law was to research some case studies on how businesses and/or sports organizations deal with legal issues on protecting their intellectual property, copyrights, and trademarks. Another strategy is to better understand the CAN-SPAM Act in order for my email campaigns to be in compliance and effective.
On my journey to achieving mastery one of the strategies I must learn is to internalize the details. (Robert Greene, Mastery). It’s imperative that I pay attention to detail especially when it comes to the law and what are my rights. When it comes to anything that has to do with the internet and the law I must not only pay attention to details, but also understand the terms, contracts, and my rights as a blogger and also as an individual who uses social media and the internet for personal and business.

Mastery Reflection Assignment: New Media Marketing
My goals for the New Media Marketing class were to learn the new media platforms and understand which platform is applicable to my organization and most effective. I also wanted to understand how different personas, influencers, and fans can affect a marketing strategy in a positive manner. What would my business need to achieve marketing success: an influencer or a brand ambassador.
I also learned how to handle negative comments made to the business in a productive and effective manner. By providing an influencer program or a brand ambassador program I learned how to ensure these programs have incentives and how to measure the success of the programs to our marketing success. Goals set should be analyzed and needs to be adjusted as necessary, but for the most part I want to ensure we meet our goals by reaching our milestones and also celebrate when we meet our goals. I will also evaluate is an influencer or brand ambassador program would not only be a great fit for my business but would it take our business to the next level and assist on achieving some of our marketing goals.
In my journey to achieve mastery, according to Robert Greene in his book, Mastery, one of the steps to achieving mastery is to transform myself through practice. The New Media Marketing class was a great practice to learning all aspects of new media as it relates to the business and the success of the marketing campaigns.

Mastery Reflection Assignment: Web Design and Usability Class
My goal for the Web Design and Usability Class was to learn all aspects of Web designing, Web standards, Web interface, and Web usability.
With this class I learned how to analyze a business homepage and dissect the strengths and weaknesses and how to make improvements for a more effective website. I also learned how to create a usability test and observe how visitors navigate the website to validate if the website is used as intended. I learned how to devise strategies on correcting usability issues.
I also learned how critical is “findability” and the importance on search engine optimization. I learned how to analyze a business website to verify if crucial information on the website is easy to find by visitors. If a visitor is unable to locate important links, it can cause a loss of a potential customer.
The lessons learned from this class will help me take my business website to a higher level. I will generate usability tests as well as analyze any “findability” or SEO issues and create a strategy to correct any findings.
According to Steve Krug, in his book, Don’t Make Me Think, a website should be designed with the visitor in mind. Krug states that the majority of visitors usually scan through pages and not really read the pages.
Just as Krug states that we must test our web pages, in Ned Snell’s book, Teach Yourself to Create Web Pages, testing is a very crucial component. That said, I will put in practice testing our website for usability, “findability”, and how effective is our SEO. Credibility and trust is important to gain from our consumer. (P.B.Lowry, D.Wilson, W.Haig, 2014)
Robert Greene in his book, Mastery, states that one of the strategies to obtaining mastery is to widen your vision. With this class my vision is widened and I will continue in my pursuit towards achieving mastery.

Mastery Reflection Assignment: Internet Consumer Behavior and Analysis Class
My goal for the Internet Consumer Behavior and Analysis was to understand how to better analyze the behavior of consumers to effectively increase sales in our products and generate more traffic on our organization’s website and social media platforms.
What I learned from this course is the different levels of an online consumer decision-making process which are: unaware, aware of product need, supplier search, evaluate and select, purchase and post-purchase evaluation and feedback. I also learned how to define my target audience and evaluate the types of online consumer segmentation as it related to Internet Marketing applications. I learned the importance of user-generated content and how I can apply it to create effective online marketing campaigns.
I learned the benefits of tracking online consumers and I also learned how this strategy could be labeled as an invasion of privacy. The class also taught me how behavioral targeting can be an effective means to not only increase the conversion rate of a business but also create a personal connection with the consumer by tailoring a marketing strategy around the consumer’s interests.
The lessons learned is what I will apply to my current organization and any business I am associated with. Understanding our audiences behavior when they visit our website will help us create a more effective marketing campaign and help us increase our social media traffic and expand our reach in order to fulfill our businesses mission and vision.
Whatever marketing strategy we use we will ensure we monitor the Return On Investment (ROI) and understand whether it’s effective or if changes are necessary. According to Dan S. Kennedy’s book, The Ultimate Marketing Plan, the ROI should be constantly watched.
As Robert Greene states in his book, Mastery, one of the keys to achieving mastery is to widen our vision. With this course and future courses I will keep widening my vision on my path to achieving mastery.
