On September 12th, 1953, John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Jacqueline Lee Bouvier married at St Mary's Church in Newport, RI with the reception at the Hammersmith Farm, owned by Jackie's stepfather. The bridal party consisted of notable members such as the bride's sister, Lee as matron of honor, Jean Kennedy, and Ethel Kennedy. Groomsmen included both of John's brothers Ted and Bobby, the latter being his best man, brother-in-law Sargent Shriver, friends Lem Billings and Red Fay, and Charles Bartlett who introduced the couple. Archbishop Cushing presided over the ceremony which included a blessing from Pope Pius XII. Jacqueline was walked down the aisle by her stepfather, Hugh Auchincloss to a rendition of Ave Maria. People crowded outside the church to catch a glimpse of the young senator and his bride. The wedding was attended by senators, diplomats, and many members of the American high society at the time, the total number of attendants at the wedding surpassed 900. For their first dance as a married couple they chose “I Married An Angel” to be performed by the Meyer Davis Orchestra.
Happy Anniversary Jack and Jackie! ❤️
