I’ve been drawing Alma a lot lately, here’s two younger versions of her! Not sure what she’s doing in the first one, but it’s something dramatic. Didn’t really like how the middle section of her dress looked, so I drew it again in the third picture, you get the point. I was thinking of when she rescued Emma, so I did try to give her a more 40s looking dress but it came out more 50s :P anyways, the second picture is when she’s 12-ish? And still at the ymbryne academy

I work in an old folks home, with the memory care unit (dementia/Alzheimers/etc). Obviously can’t say people’s names, but the person I’m talking about here really likes birds, so we’ll call them Robin.

Robin likes to stay up late, much later than we keep the tv on, or basically any of the other residents are up. Robin is my little buddy and I’ll sit and talk to them if I have nothing else to do. Last night, I asked them if they like books, and if they like scary stores, and they said yes. So until they were ready to go to sleep, I read Hill House to them. Do they have any clue what’s going on? Loosely. They’re really stuck on the fact the Eleanor took the car without her sister’s permission.

Today I walked in and was checking on my group, including Robin, and they wouldn’t answer any of my questions, but they would repetitively ask me “when does the haunting start?”

I know what they’re asking, but it sounds very silly to me. Like, yes of course our regularly scheduled Haunting Hour starts at bedtime. When the ghosts come out.

Cannot impress upon y’all how how fuckin gay these two are. Obviously there’s gonna be more important things happening here, house haunted, etc etc, I really have no idea what this story is about cause the show is entirely different from this book, but! It really is so lovely how much Eleanor admires Theodora and how they get along with each other immediately and say weird shit and Theodora tries to encourage Eleanor. No idea what’s gonna happen, probably one of them will die or be irreparably changed, but in the meantime. They’re having a nice evening together, thinking about death, and exploring the garden

Outside of bemoaning Flanagan’s Hill House & thinking gay thoughts about Kate Siegel, I’m enjoying the book soooo much, it’s wonderfully written. I read a severely disappointing book just before this and I love Shirley Jackson so much, she can make a paragraph about a character standing quietly, alone in a room into an anxiety inducing experience and it’s fuckin great. And there’s parts that are both ominous and (unintentionally? Intentionally?) hysterical.

Yes of course Mike Flanagan butchered Haunting of Hill House but the real crime is that he didn’t have Kate Siegel openly talking about doing arson and trying to do vehicular manslaughter and calling people “poor baby” in a fake pity voice

it's always very entertaining when someone is so afraid of dying that they decide they're going to defeat death itself and in the process of pursuing this entirely reasonable and achievable goal end up inventing Death Two

Yeah it was one of us, no clue who though!

I do remember thinking about it being an extreme version of how Victorian people viewed servitude. Because the servants were always nearby, or even in the room with you, but they were only there to yknow, serve. They didn’t talk or move around really, unless it was part of them doing their job. Obviously Nim and Myron seem much more comfortable with each other than that (Myron telling him to sit down with the Emma & Jacob and listen to his story, etc), but that doesn’t mean that wherever he was before didn’t treat him like that. Also, I thought it would make it easier for him to get where he needed to in Myron’s big fuck off house without having to run everywhere. As we’ve seen, he needs some calisthenics, he’s not going up and down all those stairs in that house.

Another thing I thought about when we were deciding on that was that it would be a good way for him to feel more safe. He’s a nervous little guy, and maybe he wants to be able to disappear and not be found very quickly sometimes. This way, he can drop right out of someone’s grasp, if he wants to.

As Finn said, I do also think he uses it for eavesdropping and being nosey. I think both Nim and Sharon are keeping a very close eye on Myron’s house while he’s gone. Sharon with his rats and Panloopticon henchmen and whatever he means by “the walls have ears”, and Nim by hanging around in the shadows and listening in on people.

Hi! Nim’s peculiarity situation is so weird to me, do you think it’s just Looking Like That? Like that’s the whole thing? Like Claire has a Just Looking Like That peculiarity, or do you think he has some kind of powers to go with looking like that

I do think he has an additional ability! @jjackrabbitt and I came up with it (I don’t remember who of us did, I think it was you, Cal)

This is not at all related to Just Looking Like That though. We think he can travel through shadows? Like he can become one with the shadows and that way eavesdrop on and watch people without them knowing, or give people a little surprise or play poltergeist if he wants to.

I think it’s nice to give him a bit more depth, add some more to him, he deserves it ❤️
