I’ve been drawing Alma a lot lately, here’s two younger versions of her! Not sure what she’s doing in the first one, but it’s something dramatic. Didn’t really like how the middle section of her dress looked, so I drew it again in the third picture, you get the point. I was thinking of when she rescued Emma, so I did try to give her a more 40s looking dress but it came out more 50s :P anyways, the second picture is when she’s 12-ish? And still at the ymbryne academy

I work in an old folks home, with the memory care unit (dementia/Alzheimers/etc). Obviously can’t say people’s names, but the person I’m talking about here really likes birds, so we’ll call them Robin.

Robin likes to stay up late, much later than we keep the tv on, or basically any of the other residents are up. Robin is my little buddy and I’ll sit and talk to them if I have nothing else to do. Last night, I asked them if they like books, and if they like scary stores, and they said yes. So until they were ready to go to sleep, I read Hill House to them. Do they have any clue what’s going on? Loosely. They’re really stuck on the fact the Eleanor took the car without her sister’s permission.

Today I walked in and was checking on my group, including Robin, and they wouldn’t answer any of my questions, but they would repetitively ask me “when does the haunting start?”

I know what they’re asking, but it sounds very silly to me. Like, yes of course our regularly scheduled Haunting Hour starts at bedtime. When the ghosts come out.

Cannot impress upon y’all how how fuckin gay these two are. Obviously there’s gonna be more important things happening here, house haunted, etc etc, I really have no idea what this story is about cause the show is entirely different from this book, but! It really is so lovely how much Eleanor admires Theodora and how they get along with each other immediately and say weird shit and Theodora tries to encourage Eleanor. No idea what’s gonna happen, probably one of them will die or be irreparably changed, but in the meantime. They’re having a nice evening together, thinking about death, and exploring the garden

Outside of bemoaning Flanagan’s Hill House & thinking gay thoughts about Kate Siegel, I’m enjoying the book soooo much, it’s wonderfully written. I read a severely disappointing book just before this and I love Shirley Jackson so much, she can make a paragraph about a character standing quietly, alone in a room into an anxiety inducing experience and it’s fuckin great. And there’s parts that are both ominous and (unintentionally? Intentionally?) hysterical.
