If you're looking for a secular xmas playlist my partner made one on Spotify. She puts a ton of effort in to make sure the songs flow together from start to finish and that it has a good variety of vibes, but doesn't give genre whiplash. It's also 8 hours long which she did specifically so that people could put it on at the start of the night and by the time you reach the end you've forgotten that you've heard the songs before. It's very good, has some queer representation (there's really not a ton of queer Christmas songs, but they're in there) and 100% you will find an artist or two you've never heard before. Also if you have song suggestions that aren't on there feel free to message them to me!

I need you to understand.
In Canada, Friday September 20th 2024, there are nationwide protests against trans people under the dog whistle of "protecting youth". These people have been silent in their activism for the past year and the American political climate is always a catalyst for these things. No doubt the recent debate in the US has triggered this mobilization. As a trans person, one who is particularly non-passing and doesn't intend to pass, I am scared to hell. I don't feel particularly safe.
I need you to understand, if you choose to abstain from the election for the primary reason that you hate cops and think Harris is enough of a cop to warrant your hatred, you, in my opinion are choosing your personal identity over the safety of millions of queer kids and adults, not just in the US but in other countries as well. I need you to understand that if you are making this decision because your personal brand of leftist is so much more important than safety of queer folks and other marginalized groups, then you are weighing that personal sacrifice as more valuable than the lives of those at risk.
#election#lgbtq#trans#politics#and i want to stress:fuck kamala Harris#no doubt she will do nothing about the police brutality we just saw in ny#nothing beyond “its a terrible tragedy that cant happen... i wish somebody would stop this”#fuck kamala harris but not at the expense of trans people

"BREAKING: The Internet Archive has lost its appeal in Hachette v. Internet Archive, the long-running, closely watched copyright case over the scanning and lending of print library books. Full story to follow."
Internet Archive Responds to Appellate Opinion in Hachette v. Internet Archive
"We are disappointed in today’s opinion about the Internet Archive’s digital lending of books that are available electronically elsewhere. We are reviewing the court’s opinion and will continue to defend the rights of libraries to own, lend, and preserve books."
-Chris Freeland, director of library services
The Internet Archive has set up a petition to ask publishers to restore access to the 500,000+ books removed from their library.

we do need to revisit the wording of "you can't have your cake and eat it too" because i don't think it clearly enough conveys that it's more that you can't simultaneously retain a cake and also get to consume it (which would render you cakeless). for years i was like But why not....it's my cake....?
#One time I was answering some questions after a math lab I was TA-ing and#had just finished showing a few of my students how to solve some problem#and one goes “cool cool so what are your thoughts on the unabomber?”

Mathematicians be like:
Suppose we have a finite chess board embedded onto a n-dimensional non-orientable surface and some positive integer k. Is it possible to place k white queen's and k black queens such that no queen can take another queen of a different color? In this paper we show that any efficient algorithm that could compute this would break modern encryption.

I take some serious issue with some parts of this take. For one, the implication that people of the "vote blue no matter who" mindset are "scapegoating... an extreme minority of people". Scapegoating in the present or past tense requires that explicit intention. Like, it implies they are doing it as to have another group who can shoulder the blame. So it's ironic to call out someone for their **(obvious strawman)** [which actually it wasn't, it was a different fallacy but that's neither here nor there] whilst ignoring that your main argument as it reads is also just that.
There's a glaring irony in critiquing someone's poor communication strictly emphasizing their inability to be convincing in your eyes, without actually giving any meaningful argument as to why that communication style is ineffective -- and specifically why that is ineffective for at least most people, not just OP. A convincing argument shouldn't read as "you know that's a bad point right?" with no further elaboration. Yet that is the thesis, body and conclusion of the entire criticism of the text in the screenshot.
And without that meaningful reason for the criticism, this comes off in a tone-policing kind of way. Hell, you've stated that the style of writing that stresses urgency -- a voice that is used historically throughout many protest speeches -- is ineffectual as to motivate people to act. Of course, I can only assume that this is the part you've taken issue with, since you offer no insight into the specific problems beyond "demanding" (since smug and condescending are pretty loose and open to interpretation.)
And I agree with you on most of your actual points coming in the 3rd reblog.
☑️ Politicians aren't entitled to your vote (which is not what the screenshotted text is saying...)
☑️ Tumblr users in general are pretty small as a group, let alone tumblr users who would even consider voting dem, let alone tumblr users who are on the fence about if/who they'll vote for. Certainly the impact, even with a 100% success rate, is small because the target audience is small.
☑️ Democratic loss is definitely not due to any one, or any group of Tumblr users. (Which is not the claim of the screenshotted text, but *would be* the claim if you attribute to it that they are attempting to scapegoat Tumblr users........)
However, what I see is someone taking issue with another person trying to motivate their peers to do something. Yeah, sure, it's insignificant. But then, so would be trying to convince your main friend group to vote this year. Too often people choose inaction because the actions available are not grandiose. Too often to spirit of heroism and martyrdom breeds inaction. So what if it's a small, insignificant action? We are small, insignificant people faced with what could very well feel like an impending age of violence. God forbid that people *try* in the ways they feel they can, in the ways they feel are accessible to them. Maybe there are better, more impactful actions, but I don't think anyone gets to decide what is within that person's capacity. Who are you to say that they are purposeless in their efforts because they do not meet your standards of delivery?
I find it so infuriating, and regrettably see it far too often in the spaces I am in, that people try to stop people from thinking and acting politically, with no reason, no motivation, no insight beyond cynical "that isn't going to do anything", "that action is too small". An even smaller, more insignificant action is telling people to give up because it is not good enough. The reason people do these things, like pleading to Tumblr users to vote is because *it's achievable*. At least it is *something*. I'll take that over radio silence, thoughtless humans who wait until the fall before thinking about what *could have* been done.
Speculation (keep in mind, that's all this really is) might lead you to ask "what if it doesn't make a difference?" It's just as important to ask "what if it does?"
you guys do realize that you really suck at persuading people, right
#so yeah#i encourage you to vote if you can#every election is going to require that you choose which parts of your belief system you can part with#while it's fucking stupid and there are a billion better systems than this political circus#i do feel#and this is my opinion#and it goes against a lot of my personal opinions about the way we should participate in politics and things like strategic voting#this very well might be the time for you to put aside those parts of your identity#because as a trans person#even as a Canadian one#i fear so greatly not just for those like me#the consequences of this election#maybe I'll write a longer post on my thoughts on my neocities#you know - this post is kind of funny in that it's also just as useless as anything else in here#and I've arguably allocated the most time to writing it#OP's efforts are useless - my efforts are useless - what does any of this do?#at least i enjoyed it i guess. i can't help myself...#maybe i came off too critical idk#they're right in a lot of ways... but there's something here i just find awful#and sorry for long post#if I had more time i would've written a shorter letter#and proof read

Big Media’s lobbyists have been running a smear campaign trying to paint the Internet Archive as a greedy big tech operation bent on stealing books—which is totally absurd. If you’ve ever used the WayBack Machine, listened to their wonderful archives of live music, or checked out one of their 37 million texts, it’s time to speak up. On March 20, everyone is showing their support for the Internet Archive during oral arguments.
Here's how you can help:
The Internet Archive is our library, a massive collection of knowledge and culture accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Don't let greedy publishers burn down the next Library of Alexandria!
And if you're absolutely certain you don't use or need the Internet Archive, take a look at their projects first, you might be surprised. Those are all at risk too.
