I just want to trot along behind these Thedan Sherlock and Watson approximations and delight in their crime solving shenanigans. I have two hands. We can make this work.

I have to draw all my OTPs cuddling its a requirement. Anyway Emmrich was gonna read to Tea but then she knocked him right out with quality snuggles.

Let’s talk about Emmrich, specifically let’s talk about flirting with him after he first joins the team because I’m seeing a lot of discourse expressing frustration that he appears unmoved by your attempts to gain his attention, except, he knows what your doing. He’s holding back and let’s explore why -

Taking a step back, let’s look at who Emmrich is in terms of that public facing persona:

A Professor, who actively teaches.

An expert in his field who is prolific enough that Bellara, a Dalish elf living in relative isolation, knows who he is.

He written books, Davrin talks about this.

He’s wealthy, wealthy enough that Harding mistakes him for nobility.

All these factors have likely won him a lot of attention. Emmrich tells you in the romantic interest scene with the skull that if your interest ‘goes beyond charming flattery’ then he’s interested in exploring that as well.

This line tells me that flirting with him, at least at the start, is something he considers transactional. He gets it a lot when people around him might try and charm him for various reasons; could be students looking for better grades, or others studying his field of expertise attempting to gain recognition from him, even, perhaps, the odd person who might view Emmrich as a possible sugar daddy (you’re all thinking it).

So, Rook rocks up, shows interest in him and he’s seen it all before - until Emmrich realises that Rook means it, the interest is genuine, no subterfuge. We see that through the gradual reciprocation of flirting; that soft line about picking extraordinary moments for compliments, the relaxing into the flirtation during the first visit after bringing out tea, showing you his magic.

He knows you’re flirting, he’s just making sure it’s genuine first.

Okay I keep thinking about this

So in Emmrich’s banter with Lace Harding, she comments on how Rook and Emmrich are “moving kinda quickly” or whatever. Emmrich doesn’t contest this. I just… what does she MEAN by that?

Usually when people comment that a relationship is “moving quickly,” they mean that a week ago they started dating, this week they’re all over each other, a few days later they’re moving in with each other… like, it implies that things are hot and flashy and getting super involved and enmeshed over a short amount of time.

But we don’t really see this in game. If you want to, you can believe that the first time Emmrich and Rook kiss is on that graveyard stroll. You can easily believe that the first time they do it is in that coffin, right before the end of the game.

But I… don’t think so. Because that’s not what moving fast looks like.

This is a mess but I guess what I’m saying is I really, really wish BioWare would have shown us evidence of this supposed fast-moving romance. I have no idea what that would look like, but maybe… Emmrich’s stuff in Rook’s room, or Rook’s in his. Diary entries about the companions catching Emmrich and Rook making out like teenagers around the lighthouse, or just never seeing the two separate from each other . Cutscenes in which Emmrich gifts Rook with jewelry (because if anyone would shower their significant other in jewelry, it’s Emmrich. You can’t change my mind) and I mean EXPENSIVE jewelry. Not stuff you do with someone you just became exclusive with last Tuesday. Or at least stuff that you’d expect from young lovers, not Emmrich.

And yeah, maybe a codex entry mention about how Emmrich and Rook spend just. A lot of time alone together. And how if anyone asks them about it, Emmrich turns red and stammers about how it’s no business of theirs, thank you.

Emmrich can seem very cool and collected, and I think that’s a front, because he doesn’t want people to know how in deep he is, or how much he is loving the experience. He thinks it’s embarrassing at his age. He even says something along those lines in another banter, something about being scared of looking like a besotted fool.

Idk. I guess I just wish we got to see just how much of a besotted fool he is. Like at all.
