Media Use 1/11
4:30- Rise and grind. I awake to an alarm preset to play music from a playlist of filmscores downloaded to my phone. This week, it’s been the opening to “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. Very jarring. Quite effective. 4:40- While dressing, I view TikToks my friend, who works a night shift and apparently can use company time however he likes, sends me as I sleep. 4:50-I have a short commute to work…

Freedom to Hate
The conflation of trolling and free speech on social media platforms arises from a misunderstanding of the boundaries of free speech in online spaces. This misunderstanding can lead users to perceive the enforcement of platform-specific content guidelines as violations of their fundamental right to free expression, even though these platforms are private entities not governed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Some individuals, though they voluntarily agree to adhere to the platform's specific rules and guidelines, view their provocative and often offensive content as a means of expressing their opinions, despite the disruptive and harmful nature of their behavior. Complicating matters further is the ongoing debate surrounding content moderation on social media. Advocates for stricter moderation policies argue that such measures are necessary to combat trolling, hate speech, and other forms of online harassment, aiming to create safer and more respectful online environments. In contrast, proponents of a more permissive approach cite concerns about the potential suppression of diverse viewpoints in the name of free expression, leading to discussions about where the line between legitimate expression and harmful behavior should be drawn.

"Social media may have helped to give rise to movements such as Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter that aspire to “more liberty.” But it has also spawned countermovements that seek to disenfranchise minorities—including the one that propelled Donald Trump into the White House." - Yascha Mounk

Since Twitter's takeover, the Anti-Defamation League has seen "massive spikes in racist, antisemitic and homophobic content and harassment". Musk retaliates by liking posts of "raging antisemite" and creating a poll suggesting banning the Jewish civil rights group.
