Hazel was a weird kid growing up, there’s no getting around that. She’s always had a morbid fascination with death, and would often times speak about paying respect to any dead bird or squirrel that she stumbled across on the elementary school playground. Her biological parents died in a car accident when she was nine, and although she was sad over losing them, she believed them to be in a much better place. She was briefly placed into foster care after their death, but it wasn’t long until she made the acquaintance of the Cortez family. Hazel found herself easily fitting in, and soon enough, was made an official member of the family. She asked to keep her last name when she was adopted, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t become devoted to the Cortez’s through and through. The first eight years of Jackie’s life are something she tries not to think about; she considers her life as it is not to have started when she was adopted by the Hummels. Prior to that, she was raised in a physically and emotionally abusive environment by her biological parents, up until the point where her father attempted to murder her mother. Following the court trial that resulted in him being sent to prison, her mother put all the blame on Jackie for contacting the police and telling them the truth not only about the incident, but about the longterm abuse that preceded it. Pearl Vang signed away her parental rights, and Jackie found herself in the foster care system for a brief amount of time before being adopted by the Hummels. It took time for her to trust them, but eventually, Jackie began to question how she got so lucky as to be a part of their family. They truly are the most important part of her, even if she isn’t always the best as showing it. Because of her childhood, she has a lot of problems in regards to anxiety and fear, and was recently diagnosed with PTSD that she has yet to tell her family about. Jackie’s rightfully suspicious of most people she comes across outside of her family, which is something she knows she needs to work on but is struggling to. Mallory isn’t 100% sure how she managed to come to be given her family, but she’s also not the type to ruminate on it too much. She’s not the type to ruminate on anything too much. What she does know (and acknowledge) is that her mother’s control never fit with Mallory’s desire to be as free as a bird. Maybe it’s innate, maybe it’s a result of her upbringing. She loved her family, gymnastics, and exploring, the latter of which didn’t at all align with her mother. Dominique was adopted at a few months old, and has been a St. James in name and spirit ever since. Given all the horror stories she’s heard of children adopted into horrible families, she thinks she’s gotten pretty lucky in that she not only found a family that’s rich in money, but also love. Ever since she can remember, Dominique has had a love for words — she could spend hours curled up in a large arm chair, tearing through book after book. From as far back as she can remember, Shiloh was never a child to want for anything. Her mother was constantly working during Shiloh’s childhood, and she only saw her father on alternating weekends, so she considers herself to have been primarily raised by her older sister and their grandparents. Despite the slightly non-traditional family dynamic she grew up in, she was surrounded by people would made sure she had every opportunity she could ever want. She fell in love with language while learning Korean from her immigrant grandmother, and started learned more languages as she got older, eventually being hired by the county as an interpreter. Although she was always a very good student who could have excelled in anything she put her mind to, her experience growing up in a predominantly immigrant community has instilled a bit of a do-gooder mentality. At least in her professional life. In her personal life, she’s pretty much an idiot who never learned to process her emotions. Audrey was previously married to Miles McCarthy, who she was completely in love with. After suffering a miscarriage that strained their relationship though, Audrey cheated on Miles on impulse as a byproduct of not dealing with her grief. He found out and the two promptly divorced. Now Audrey is trying to restart her life from the ground up, and isn’t quite sure how she’s supposed to do that.
