I know we all love the idea of precious and innocent Lieutenant Mitaka who wouldn’t harm a fly and takes whatever he is dealt without question but consider:

A hard-working lieutenant that is competent in his job and dealings with other officers, who is intelligent and exceptional in his own way and hides it behind a demure facade.

Who is utterly dedicated to the First Order and respects his compatriots but won’t shy away from putting insubordinate officers in their place when they act out. 

Who completed the necessary level of combat training that most or all Academy students were given with high marks and a reputation for being an excellent tactician. Who wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger on a resistance fighter if necessary.

Who has a few dark secrets of his own, personal anxieties and traumatizing memories and other debilitating flaws, and has learned like most of his fellow officers to hold in and compartmentalize these troubling thoughts and emotions and confine them to the privacy of his personal quarters.

Who, being a fully grown man, has probably had at least a few sexual encounters within or outside of other officers in the First Order. Who knows his way around the female or male body - possibly both - and has grown a personal preference and a normal amount of confidence in his body.

Who is submissive to his superiors and those with obvious advantages over him as the need suits him, but has his own level of dominance when given the opportunity to take control.

Who is in fact innocent and shy at a first glance but upon inspection has his own unique set of strengths and weaknesses, interests and dislikes, dreams and fears that make him more than just another sweet-faced officer.
