I love Tk and his lil “nerdy” interests haha

- lizards (need I say more)

- gets offended over someone thinking Catan is boring (same level of offended-ness as his hubby stealing chocolate puddings)

- genuinely believing that his dad would be excited to assemble 1000 pieces of “dogs playing poker” puzzle (til this day I still laugh at how that was Carlos & TK choice of puzzle for owen, not some basic beautiful scenery but it has to be DOGS PLAYING POKER and the way they weren’t even trying to be comedic about it)

The idea of TK and Carlos doing puzzles together with coffee and blankets on a Sunday is too cute to stomach I actually might stop living. He’s so CUTE with all the unexpected things he’s passionate about 🥺

Can you recommend some Tarlos fics? I’m new to the fandom and need my fix!

hi! welcome to the fandom! <3 sorry this took a couple days, i was trying to scour my bookmarks and some rec blogs to ensure nothing was missed (though i’m sure some have accidentally slipped through the cracks, and i hope people will reply to this post with any fics/authors i might have forgotten).

the lone star fandom’s full of some wonderful authors, so there’s really a lot to choose from! i would firstly recommend blogs like @lonestardaily and @911lsficrecs for their roundups and rec lists.

Chapter Seven

When TK hears the words “we’re having a baby,” he honestly thinks he’s dreaming. Any moment now, he’s going to wake up beside Carlos. They’ll have a good laugh before Carlos pulls him close, and they’ll fall back to sleep.

As he’s waiting for it to happen, his mother leans forward and puts her hand on his knee.

“Sweetie,” she says, “did you hear us?”

“I heard you,” he says as he looks around the room. He’s not waking up. “I’m just….how?”

“Do you want the logistics?” his father asks, and TK quickly shakes his head.

“No, no, I don’t need that, but...you’re fifty-five years old,” he tells his mother, who sits back on the couch with a quiet “that’s rude.” TK turns to Owen. “And you have cancer. How is it even possible? What are the odds?”

“Never tell me the odds,” Owen says.

“Dad,” TK snaps, “not now. I don’t get it. Have you thought about this? Have you thought it through, at all?”

“Yes, actually,” his mother says, “we’ve given it a lot of thought. There are risks and it’s a little scary.” She reaches for Owen’s hand, and TK stares down at the way their fingers overlap. It’s been decades since he’s seen that. “But right now, the doctor says that everything is good. We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re getting there.”

“And what about the two of you? Are you…” He gestures down at their hands, then looks to Gwyn. “Mom, are you staying? Are you two getting back together? You know, it’s not fair to pull this on another kid, so if you’re undecided, I suggest you figure it out quick.”

His father holds up his free hand. “Easy there, kid. We’re together, I mean, we have been for a while, just unofficially. But now…” He gestures to Gwyn’s stomach. “This really sealed the deal.”

“A child isn’t a reason to be together,” TK tells them, “and it hasn’t been enough to stay together in the past, so why is this time different?”

“We’re different,” Gwyn says as she gets a tighter hold on Owen’s hand. “We’re older--.”

“I’ll say,” TK mumbles, and Gwyn gives him a deadly look.

“Mom.”

“Don’t mom me,” Andrea says as she climbs out of the car.

Carlos rolls his eyes. “But mom,” he says as he gestures to the overgrown front lawn, the crooked mailbox, and the way one of the shutters is hanging at a pitiful angle.

“Don’t judge a book by it’s cover,” Andrea tells him.

“The cover looks haunted,” Carlos shoots back as Debbie pulls up behind them and gets out of her car.

“Now this place is a real diamond in the rough,” she says, nearly tripping over a large crack in the driveway. “That’s an easy fix, don’t worry.” She dangles the keys in her hand and smiles wide. “Y’all wanna take a look inside?”

Carlos sighs and TK smiles tightly.

“That’s what we’re here for,” TK tells her and Debbie pats his arm.

“Now, I know how this place looks,” Debbie says as they follow her up the front path, “but the bones are good. The foundation is solid and the roof is in excellent condition.” She sticks the key in the lock and turns it as she leans all her weight on the door. “The electricity and plumbing all check out just fine. It’s just a little outdated...aesthetic wise….ah!” The door pops open and she smoothes a hand over her hair like she wasn’t just struggling to get it open. “Piece of cake.” She makes a sweeping gesture with her arm. “After you.”

Carlos steps cautiously inside and TK follows after, his hand wrapped around Carlos’ elbow like they’re getting ready to walk through a haunted house.

They only make it a handful of steps before they’re hit with a strong, sickeningly sweet odor.

“What the hell is that,” TK asks, composure slipping as he buries his nose in the crook of his elbow.

“There might be a slight rodent problem, nothing that a good exterminator couldn’t handle,” Debbie says, sounding completely unbothered as she throws open the long curtains that are hanging over the windows.

Clouds of dust are illuminated as the light pours in and TK sees for the first time what they’re really working with.

The house looks straight out of the seventies--thick, orange shag carpet beneath their feet and garish floral wallpaper on the walls.

The open floor plan offers a clear view from where they’re standing into the kitchen which is a decent size. It’s hard to get excited about it though, not with the dark cabinets, the faux brick vinyl flooring, and the sickly green backsplash.

“No,” Carlos says and Andrea steps in front of him, stopping him from running out the door.

“It’s three bedrooms, two baths,” Debbie tells them, still doing her best to put a good spin on the place. “There’s a beautiful backyard, it’s in a wonderful school district, and most importantly it’s well under your budget which means there’s plenty of wiggle room to make all the updates you two will need.”

“How far under our budget,” Carlos asks and TK wanders down the hall as they talk numbers.

The spare rooms are about equal in size with adequate closet space. There’s a full bath with a large linen closet between them and down the end of the hall is the master bedroom.

It’s larger than their old room with more windows to let in more light. They’d have to get black out curtains if they wanted to catch any sleep during the day but he has to admit, the thought of throwing them open and bathing Carlos in warm, early morning light is appealing.

The sliding door to the closet is off its hinges but there looks to be plenty of room behind it. He nearly gives himself a heart attack when he opens the door to the master bath and a mouse darts out and runs across his foot. He takes a deep breath to calm himself down then pokes his head into the bathroom. There’s a shower and a tub along with a double vanity and more of the same ugly wallpaper that’s hanging throughout the house.

“It’s always nice to have an extra bedroom,” he hears Debbie say as he steps back into the hallway. They’re standing at the door of the first spare room, Carlos with his arms crossed as Andrea nods along to everything Debbie is saying. “It could be a nice office or a cute little nursery...close enough to the bedroom that you’ll feel safe but far enough that you won’t hear every little thing. Plus it’s big enough to transition into a toddler’s room and beyond.”

Carlos catches TK’s eye down the hall and TK smiles.

“I’m gonna go check out the backyard,” he says, “do you want to come?”

Carlos nods and holds out his hand for TK to take.

The backyard is more overgrown than the front. It’s shaded by large trees on one side and clear and sunny on the other. A section of the tall, wooden fence is down on the left side and there’s a small tool shed in the back corner.

“This place is a mess,” Carlos says and TK nods as a breeze blows through. The leaves on the trees sway, creating a sun dappled look to the grass below and TK can suddenly see a tire swing hanging off one of the strong limbs. He can see a dog chasing a frisbee and a small garden on the sunny side with herbs for Carlos to cook with. They could put a picnic table on the slab of concrete they’re standing on and cover it with a pergola and then drape that with strings of lights.

They could host birthday parties, Thanksgivings, and Christmas’. It could be the spot for epic 126 hangs or a quiet night in for just the two of them to enjoy.

“We should get going,” Carlos says, “I think Debbie has a half a dozen other houses to show up.”

He starts to turn but Carlos grabs his wrist and pulls him back. “Stop,” TK says, “wait.” He looks out at the backyard. “Can’t you see it?”

Carlos’ face twists unpleasantly and TK squeezes his wrist before he lets him go and steps off into the grass. “We can fix the fence,” he says, “and there’s plenty of room for a dog to run around back here. We could put a table right there and some nice chairs. Maybe a hammock between the trees. We could plant a little garden right here with basil and oregano and cilantro because you feel the need to put it in everything.”

Carlos huffs a laugh. “Lavender, too.”

“Can you cook with lavender?”

Carlos shrugs. “Bees love it. I looked it up.”

TK feels his heart skip a beat in his chest as he steps back onto the concrete and leans in for a kiss.

“This place is going to take so much work,” Carlos tells him. “We won’t be able to do it all on our own.”

“I know.”

“There’s so much to do.”

“I know.”

“We won’t be able to move in until...god, I don’t even know when.”

“I know,” TK says, “I know, I know.”

“There’s probably a dead body in that shed and there’s definitely dead mice in the walls.”

TK snorts. “I’m from New York City. I’ve seen rats as big as dogs. Look, I know it’s going to take work but I think it’s worth it. We can really make this place our own. But maybe we can let your dad take care of the dead body.”

Carlos smiles but there’s tension behind it. “Oh god,” he says, “what are we getting ourselves into?”

“A home,” TK tells him. “We’re getting ourselves into a home.”
