Our next "Smaugust" Dragon is Jake Long, from American Dragon: Jake Long.
I only watched a few episodes in passing when I was younger, but I was astonished by the style change between seasons 1 and 2, haha.
I don't think Jake typically ran around on all-fours, but for the sake of him interacting with Haku, here he is in beast mode :p
Tomorrow's dragon is: a children's book character who lost his head! ...but only for a moment.

Our next "Smaugust Dragon" is Sisu from Raya and the Last Dragon!
She also has a super sleek animator's design that I really like.
The young Emily still buried deep inside me wanted to come out and hug this dragon and buy 800 toys of her
Tomorrow's dragon is also a long-styled dragon--one who is the spirit of a river.

Today's "Smaugust Dragon" is Elliot from Pete's Dragon!
I thought this movie was amaaazing as a kid. An animated dragon interacting with real people? Get outta here. Then to add nice music and Don Bluth--magic!
Who's Elliot shyly offering an apple to?
Tomorrow's dragon is a she-dragon who loves giving and receiving gifts, and is all about trust.

Our next "Smaugust" dragon is Ruth from the Dragonriders of Pern series!
Yes, I had to include a few book dragons. :3
I decided to include Ruth from all the dragon in the Pern series because I feel like he's the most unique and recognizable. And he's super interesting because he's the only white dragon--smaller than the others and sterile. He was even too weak to exit his own egg when he was born.
It's hard to find a unique series about dragons like Pern. Mostly because it's part scifi and somewhere between plot-driven and character-driven. :0
Plus the dragons can do weird things like teleport and talk telepathically.
Enough gushing over Pern! Our next dragon is a shy one who can turn invisible. And quite likes apples.

Our next "Smaugust" dragon is the Day Fury from How to Train your Dragon 3. I'm mostly trying to only include the main dragon from each dragon movie, but I really wanted to include the day fury so she could be interacting with our next dragon.
Speaking of which, some of you old school dragon fans miiiight know the next one. Our next dragon hails from a book! He is also a white dragon... one who assists his fellow dragons in fighting the Thread.

Our next "Smaugust Dragon" is Draco from Dragonheart!
A lot of people still have such fondness for this little movie from the '90s.
I have to say, he is one of my favorite dragon designs ever. Phil Tippet and Peter Konig worked real hard on this guy and it shows. They took inspiration from many animals for him including snakes, horses, lions, and gorillas.
So who is Draco looking at? Tomorrow's dragon is: a little guy who is friend of a barbarian with a talking sword.

Our next Smaugust Dragon is cute lil Spike from My Little Pony.
Here he is, having a spot of tea while watching the argument go down between Spyro and Charizard. :p
Tomorrow's dragon is: the dragon with the sexiest voice of all time. And I'm not talking about Benedict Cumberbatch.

Our next "Smaugust Dragon" Is the Reluctant Dragon, from the Disney movie!
So, he’s the one who will be holding Spyro by the tail once I put the final image together :3
I love that the Reluctant Dragon’s tail has a heart at the end!
Tomorrow's dragon is: another peaceful dragon, who hangs out with ponies all day. :0

Our next "Smaugust Dragon" is Spyro, from the Spyro the Dragon series of games.
I never got to play it as a kid, but man did I want to! Dragons were my thing. :3
I did finally get to play the first one when it came out on the Switch with the renewed graphics. I really liked it--young Emily would've been pleased.
Spyro is pretty spunky, but not annoyingly so, like some other '90s video games characters.
So Spyro here is mad that Charizard made a face at him, but what's up with the weird pose? Well, he's being held back by our next Smaugust dragon: A dragon more interested in picnics than fighting knights.

Our next "Smaugust" dragon is Charizard!
He is a very simple design, and he's all the better for it. Who doesn't recognize a Charizard when they see one? :3
And I gotta say, he has one of the more unique dragon tails: pure fire!
Now who is Charizard sticking his tongue out at?
Tomorrow's dragon is: A spunky little purple dude who is also from a video game.

Our next “Smaugust dragon” is Dojo from Xiaolin Showdown, which I guess was airing near the end of my childhood. (Yes, I'm old). Those were the days! I think it was coming out at the same time as Avatar: The Last Airbender--to be honest I liked Xiaolin Showdown more at the time because it was hilarious. :3 I don't know if my mind would change: I haven't watched either in a long time!
Dojo here helps the kidz in the series find mystical items called Shen Gong Wu (such as the Sword of the Storm in the picture), and he is capable of growing into a much larger size. Also, he's voiced by Wayne Knight, who is just hilarious.
I think the creators must have taken some inspiration from Mushu for him, and if so, they did it right, because Dojo is certainly his own thing.
Tomorrow's dragon is: an orange fiery dude who spends most of his time inside of a ball. :0

Our third dragon for "Smaugust" is Mushu from Mulan! Here he is with the Fa family sword.
I have nothing negative to say about Mushu's design--it's nice and sleek and simple. And somehow they still managed to caricature Eddie Murphy into a dragon.
Tomorrow's Dragon is: a fellow small dragon, holding a sword of his own... some sort of "shen gong wu"

I've been wanting to do this project for several years, and it's finally happening! I never participate in Inktober or Mermay, but I've been wanting to do a series of dragons, so I'm introducing Smaugust Dragons!
Every day this month I'll be submitting a picture of a dragon, culminating in a big mural with all of them.
Our first dragon is Toothless from How to Train your Dragon. I drew him once before, but man my skills have improved.
I've discovered, while drawing all these dragons, that there are three types of dragons: Fat dragons, long dragons, and cool lizard dragons, haha. And I have my favorite of each type. Toothless here counts as a cool lizard dragon.
And each dragon has an interesting thagomizer or end-of-tail design... usually. Some of them just have tails. Toothless definitely has one of the best tail designs because it's a huge plot point to the story and really well designed.
So who is Toothless growling at here?
Tomorrow's dragon is one a lot of you youngsters may not know. It's a dragon who once guarded the cave of a magician, and fought and defeated a cyclops.
