Week 17 - IT’S OVER. I’M DONE
Oh my gosh. The day has finally come. I never thought it would happen because when I’m animating, it feels like there’s no end to it. There’s always something to fix and improve on, no matter how much times I go over it. But I can officially say it: I’m finished with my animation! There were a lot of trials and tribulations that came when working on it. I’ve had to look over the different parts of my film several times wondering if it was good enough, if it was too fast, if it was smooth enough. And then there were the hectic moments where I felt I had too much to do and ended up pushing this film aside temporarily which was driving me insane because it always ended up being a lingering task that was in the back of my mind, bothering me that it wasn’t finished. There were also days where I just did so much stuff that wasn’t related to this film that I just wanted to relax and take a breather and not work on anything. Fortunately, there were days where I had a burst of motivation and actually got to work on my animation in large chunks, typically staying up the entire night until like 8am to finish the part I was working on. Overall, it was really fun near the end, watching everything come together.
Next time, I know the film won’t be as simple as I made this one because in retrospect, if I only focused on this film and had nothing else going on, I probably could have finished this film within a month with enough hard work and effort. And the drawings would probably look ten times better than it does now. So next time, I really need to learn to stick to the production schedule and keep myself on track. Either that or I need to be realistic about my own working habits and create the schedule according to when I actually think I will work on everything. During every step of the film, I needed more time to work on it which I would have had if I had stuck to the schedule, so I’ll need to keep that in mind. This was especially essential for using Adobe After Effects because I never used it before, but I’ve heard of so many good things that it can do and wanted to try it out. I just wanted some basic effects out of it and it would have been nicer if I gave myself more time to teach myself how to use it and explore the program a little more. But I essentially was able to do the two effects I really wanted in a few hours.
For future students, I highly recommend having a clear idea in your head and knowing how to execute exactly what you want to do with your film. Basically, plan it really well from the beginning and try not to deviate from your idea. You can change things, but then it’ll just delay you and take longer to finish. But if you’re able to finish it even with the changes then you can go for it. Having everything planned out and knowing what you are doing from the start will definitely help to keep you on track with your planned production schedule and probably give you less stress throughout the semester.

Week 16 - It’s Almost Over
Wow, my animation is almost complete. And just in time, too, since it’s almost due. I spent my whole night trying to fix the problem areas of my animation and adding the details I initially left out to do last. The main problem area was the running in the second sequence since it was so fast. I added another frame between every single frame of that sequence so I’m hoping that makes it slower and still look like a believable run. I also fixed the ending of the second sequence to make it longer and have the petals move outward in a more linear fashion. I was going to make a continuous loop of petals passing them by, but I figured it could just fall into emptiness at the end. It may still be a little fast, but I hope the transition I’m going to add in between the second and third sequence will hide that. I also added the growing cracks and the blood to the first sequence and last minute added blood to the second one. Since I ended up cutting out a shot of the second one that I just didn’t feel like drawing, I figured I could still incorporate one of the things that I wanted to be portrayed in that shot, in two of the shots in the sequence instead.
Now, I just need to put everything together, edit it, and add some sound and I’ll be done. I foresee another all-nighter in my future, but at least I’ll know that I’ll be finished at the end of it.
These two photos are poses I added to the running sequence to slow it down because after reviewing it, I realized there were relatively large gaps between the poses that could be easily filled.
This is blood I last minute added to the second sequence since I cut out a shot that originally was supposed to convey that they were tracking blood on the path which is supposed to indicate reality since there was also blood in the first sequence when they were in that cinderblock cell.
The rose petals are fewer and move in a much more organized direction. The coloring is also more consistent. I have no clue what happened the first time, but they were colored in pieces so it was difficult to make sure all the parts were still there when I moved them.
And finally, these are the little details I added to the first sequence that I waited until the last minute to draw in because it wouldn’t have taken too much time and I just didn’t feel like drawing them in when I was doing the lining and coloring the first time around.

Week 15 - P R O G R E S S, F I N A L L Y!
I am tired, but I am also about 95% finished with the animation part of my film. I actually feel like I was productive with my film for once. I just need to add in some details and fix certain things like how the drawings look or maybe make minor changes to the drawings themselves. Otherwise, I have finished lining and coloring what I have right now. Which is about where I wanted to be on my production schedule since I wanted the final animation to be done by around today and then spend the next couple of weeks, editing it. Which is basically what I’m going to do. I hope to finish up the little details and revisions of my animation this weekend and begin to play around with the film in editing and add sounds to it over the course of next week.
The following pictures are the ending shots of my 3 sequences that I finished up. Although, I still need to make some other decisions on them, like if I really want each of the sequences to end the way it looks in these images.
Maybe I should make the person make contact with the wall before it cuts to the next scene.
Maybe I should do the moving petals around their head differently, or completely change the visual I’m using to indicate that they are falling.
And I think I need to add in the line for the floor and this will probably not be the ending shot. I’ll probably end up reusing the punching motions from the first sequence and have it fade to black.

Week 14 - Uhhhhhh, It’s Been a Busy Week
I definitely did not get to do everything I wanted to this week. I’ve been distracted and preoccupied with this other large project that just popped up. So the most that I could get done for this week was figuring out how to get the lines for the paintbrush and pencil tools to come out smooth when I use them. And I actually did the final line art for a few different frames in the 3rd sequence. But since I’m only tracing and minimally adding things while doing the final line art, I hope to be able to color and line everything within this next week. It’d be really nice to keep up with my original production schedule where by the time May rolls around, I’d be working on editing the animation and adding sound to it. AND THAT’S LITERALLY A WEEK AWAY. Totally not freaking out at the moment. I have confidence that I will be able to work on my animation every single day from tomorrow and finish lining and coloring everything by the end of the month. It’s time to officially push aside these other assignments of mine for other classes that aren’t due until finals week and to finally place my complete focus on my animation.

Week 13 - Rough Animation Finished?
I first started off this week making some edits to my first sequence (most likely to put off drawing the running part) and fixed it up. I shortened some parts which took a while because I had to fix all the layers so that their visibility would match up with each other. And I also figured out how to move the camera as pictured right below.Â
Just as a reference, you insert a camera layer, add a peg which is a button on the same line as adding a layer, and press the icon on the right side of the screen that says KF+ on the frame that you want there to be a different camera angle.
And that means that my mistake when I first tried to do it is that I didn’t set a key frame on the previous frame in order to keep the camera position the same on all the previous frames. That was the reason why I thought I was doing it wrong and was avoiding trying to move the camera.Â
But since I have figured that out, I have finished editing my first sequence (aside from animating the blood trails on the wall when the pillow is thrown and the cracks that slowly start to appear as they punch the wall the second time), I had begun to do the running poses on my second sequence.
And pictured below is a screenshot of my second sequence while the character is running. I think it might be a little fast, however, I asked a friend for her opinion and she said it is a little fast but it’s not that noticeable. If it really starts to bug me at some point, I’ll probably try to add more frames and fix it.
If you want to check it out, this is a link to view the actual running as they’re running along this path.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tzvTpMbDDb_YFBF41k2m53U8TTYXxl6z/view?usp=sharing
And this screenshot is the ending of the second sequence which should signify that I am finished with my rough animation. It was a little tough trying to finish it up. I had to make some changes from my storyboard to make this simpler for me to animate. I think I got rid of the shot where they look down at the path and notice that the amount of roses they can run on is receding. Ideally, I would have the path moving along with their feet, but I’m running low on time (and getting a little tired) so I just decided to cut that part out. Plus, it wouldn’t make much sense to have their feet still moving if it’s just going to cut down to that angle and then cut back only to have them be in the same spot. Which is what I was originally going to do along with just having a still shot of them looking down at their feet, but that wouldn’t make sense either. So I just decided to take that part out altogether.Â
And then this ending part where they are falling. To make it actually look like they’re falling, I needed to make the things in the background move off the screen however, that took quite a bit of time, but I’m still not 100% sure I’m satisfied with it which is why I question if I’m truly done with rough animating my project. I think I’m just imagining there would be an endless amount of petals moving with them or that this last shot is too fast and too short. However, I am now rationalizing that the petals kind of “run out” the further they fall, so I think it’s okay on that note. Otherwise, I still think it could be looked at as too fast and too short, but if that also bothers me, I can always add some more frames when I’m doing the final animation where I draw the final lines and color which is what I intend to get to work on this coming week.Â
Hopefully, I’ll be able to get more down because now that the semester is winding down, I feel more overwhelmed than before despite me believing that the end of doing work for my other class was going to free up my time. I mean I guess it did in a way because I feel I’m sleeping more, but that’s also stressing me out because sleep is what I sacrifice in order to be productive. So, I guess over the next week, I’ll be able to make more sacrifices like that (lol).

Week 12 - A Month Left
Well, that wasn’t a very productive week. It was always after midnight where I’d have free time to work on my animation but I never felt the true motivation to do it, probably because I wasn’t in the mood to work on a background for the second sequence. But finally, the energy hit me on Wednesday and I at least completed the background for the first few shots of the sequence. But then I couldn’t pull an all-nighter like I was tempted to because I had a VERY long day on Thursday that started quite early. And by the end of Thursday, I was so tired that all I could do was finish up the first motion of the sequence.
It literally took me like 3 hours just to get this motion down correctly. Since I wanted to portray the character coughing and swishing their hand around as if there were dust clouds surrounding them.
In the end, I did not accomplish everything I wanted to do by today, but I am hoping to finish the rough animation of the entire second sequence by tomorrow because when I really think about it, there’s really not that much I need to do. As far as motions go, I just need to draw the lowering of the character’s arm, them getting up and beginning to run, them actually running, and running and looking down. So if I work really hard then I should be able to complete this within the next couple of days and then I hope to begin making my final lines on my rough animation while also adding in some of the camera movements to the first sequence because I did not do that yet as I wasn’t 100% sure how to do it and I wanted to put that off for later. And if I really put in the time for my animation, then I hope that I will definitely finish lining and coloring the animation within the next two weeks. Â

Week 11 - 2/3 of Part One of Three Completed
After pulling an all-nighter in an attempt to finish my entire 3rd sequence of my film (at least the rough animation of it), I need to look like my character as pictured below.
Now all I need to do is roughly animate the 2nd sequence which will require me to actually make a nice running cycle of my character which will definitely take the most time to do. But hopefully after that, it won’t take too long to do the 2nd sequence. I can already picture how much work it’ll take for me to do it after drawing out the running sequence. I’m excited to get to that part because it indicates that I’m a step closer to being done. Even though I also want to refine (fix the drawings and timings of previous rough animations). I am still behind schedule, but if I keep it up at this rate, I’ll probably be able to catch up.
The pictures below are screenshots of my 3rd sequence close to the beginning, middle and end, respectively. The first picture shows the action that took me the longest to do in the entire sequence.Â
This next picture also shows an action that took me a while to do but mostly because I was trying to fix the timing by drawing more frames since it was going by way too fast originally. This was also around in the middle of the sequence just to show my progression since I don’t feel like attempting to upload a video.
And finally, this last picture is the ending of the 3rd sequence and my entire film. It was pretty simple to draw and animate, but it’s here to document the ending of what would be the 3rd sequence had I decided to put it in video format.Â

Week 10 - A Little Behind
I feel like I got quite a bit of stuff done, but not enough that would satisfy me. I am totally falling behind schedule because I’m supposed to be finished with rough animating today, but I am completely not done. I’m like 80% done with rough animating the entire first sequence but that isn’t good enough. The image above kind of sums up how I’ve been feeling about this the entire week. Lying down because I’ve been feeling under the weather the past couple of days, but the stress of this animation has been keeping me awake.Â
To finish the first sequence, I just need to draw out the part where the character turns away from the wall and runs towards it to send a flying kick to break the wall open. I also want to add the camera movement to another part because I haven’t fully figured out how to move the camera without affecting the camera position for the other frames. And I need to refine the running clips because it doesn’t look like running and I was a little too anxious to move on at the time so I just kind of drew it however and had them moving across the screen.Â
After I finish the first sequence, I intend on finishing the third sequence. It’s a little out of order, but the third sequence should be very easy to draw and I want to feel like I’m making progress. The second sequence might be a little easier than the first but still more difficult than the third because I have to draw the running shots which I find to be very time-consuming because I have to figure out the positions of the character and the proper timing.Â
It might be impossible and probably not going to happen, but I hope to finish the rough animating by the end of this weekend, however, it might be more realistic to make it by next week Friday. Well, I hope I’ll be able to get something done by the time the weekend is over.

Week 9 - Spring “Break”
I can’t believe it’s nearly the end of spring break and I feel as if I have made a minimal amount of progress on my animation. Which is weird because I finished all of my projects for my other class on Tuesday and still haven’t been able to complete more than 40 frames of animation. I partly blame the fact that I lost the stylus for my computer when I was trying to work on stuff away from home and I didn’t have my tablet on me. I was originally going to work on it then but that just prevented me from getting anything done for FIVE HOURS. (The link below demonstrates my frustrations with this situation.)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tmJqE1gXrSLTvUDfC388gIcSSW9fPx8W/view?usp=sharing
However, the best progress that I feel that I have accomplished is that I was working on refining the shots that I have drawn out and was adding more to it to make it smoother and more complete. This part was that I was drawing the character turning around for him to begin punching the wall. That took some time to do as I had to shift over the frames that I had before this part and I had to act it out myself so I could visualize what the character’s body would look like when doing that. The following two links show what I came up with and the reference of what I saw when I was doing it myself.
The actual thing:Â
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oWipjrPmcsixF0rkbq5iaT30za8DSKad/view?usp=sharing
The reference: (Please ignore the fact that this is just a weird video of my legs moving lol)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D8vLrSVabJoHMCR1y81WnKTjtOeIGbwO/view?usp=sharing
And now I will attempt to set a more realistic goal for myself. Given that starting from today, I can do a little more animation every single day, then I hope to complete my entire rough animation by next Friday. Especially since I was looking at all my shots and they either could be cycled or held on the screen longer. I just need to get past the drawing of the body in every position. Now that I’ve gotten through the punching poses, I’m hoping to use that again in the 1st sequence when they’re breaking through the wall and I just have to really deal with the running poses since that takes up quite a bit of the 2nd sequence. Otherwise, I feel that with enough dedication and determination, I can finish my rough animation by the 26th just as I planned on my production schedule.Â

Week 8 - Finally, The Time Has Come
Finally, it’s almost spring break. By the start of the official day of spring break, I intend on seriously finishing up the rough animation of my film. This week, I have been mostly cranking out the finishing touches on projects for my other classes so that I could crank out everything for the rest of the semester for this film. And in this time of working on my other projects, the only progress I really had was that I refined the shots I already drew where the timing needed to be adjusted. As shown in the picture above, I took the time to space out the frames I initially drew and tried to add in more frames in between in order to slow down the punching action. Originally, the fist first hitting the wall was kind of slow and the punching the wall action was kind of fast. But I at least gave myself the time to fix that so that it’s not as fast or slow as before. Now, mark my words: I will finish the rough animation or most of it during spring break. I did not crank out my projects for my other class just to slack off on this film.

Week 7 - Busy Days (I need it to be spring break already)
I have overestimated how rough I was going to make the animation. It appears to me that, subconsciously, my intention was to draw a single line over the sketchy lines in my rough animation in the process of doing my final animation. And if I do that, then that means I need to make the rough animation look very similar to what the finished product is going to look like. Which means that I am taking way longer on the rough animation than I actually should be.
Last week, I said I wanted to complete my entire animation roughly, but now I can see that I will need much more time than that. I have just started on the animation this week and have barely scraped the surface of the 4th shot in the first sequence. It also does not help that I’m actually trying to finish up the bulk of my assignments for my other class so that I will eventually be able to put all of my focus into this animation. So at the moment, it really feels like I’m not getting much done. But once it’s spring break, I swear, I’m going to charge through everything and try to finish the entire rough animation and begin nicely lining all of my sketchy lines. That is the main goal. Plus, it will still keep me on track according to the overview of my production schedule. As much as I like planning things specifically and by a day-by-day basis, I knew that doing that for this animation with my workload would have stressed me out even more because I would not have been accomplishing everything I want in one day.
So next up, my more realistic goal for next week is to complete a rough animation of my first sequence.

Week 6 - Animating?
Man, it has been a LOOOOOOOONG time since I’ve had to use ToonBoom. I almost forgot how to import my background images. It took me some time to refamiliarize myself with the tools and features, but now, I’m ready to start on my really rough animation.
I would have and should have started earlier but this was a really hectic but not hectic week for me. My other classes were not that overwhelming, but I just felt too tired to work on anything up until now which was actually making me a little anxious because I really did want to get some stuff done and be productive. I’m just glad that I have redesigned my background images so that it kind of has the no-outline or barely-there-outline look that I was going for. I also did spend some time fixing up my animatic so that I would have a better idea of how all my drawings are going to look and how my backgrounds are going to look.
And while I am still unsure of what I want to do for my character to make them look more distinguishable, I plan to try to look into it more as I am animating and drawing rough figures. Hopefully, I’ll be able to complete a very rough animation of my entire film by next week.

Week 5 - Time Management
This week was probably the easiest week that I have experienced regarding the production of my film. But it also could be looked at as my least productive. Most of the things that I needed to complete by the end of the week, I had basically finished off last week like creating my shot breakdown list, asset list, animatic, script, and final visuals for the characters, props and backgrounds. This week, I tweaked my script a little by making very few changes to the wording, added sound to my animatic, and colored in all of the background, character and prop designs that I had. I kept the shot breakdown, asset list and production schedule mostly the same. I still couldn’t work up the motivation to meticulously go through the detailed production schedule because I feel like I will have a difficult time staying on task like that. I already currently try to plan out what day I’m going to work on which part of my assignments for all of my classes and half the time, I don’t even accomplish everything. So at least planning it on a weekly basis will put much less pressure on me. Overall, it wasn’t too difficult this week to finish my assignments since I dedicated time to it last week.
However, even though I only had to do this much to finish my final preproduction package, I did not get to start on the rough animation of the film. Even though it would be going ahead of my production schedule, it still is nice to get a head start so that I have more time to maintain the quality of the drawings. I’m hoping that by the time I get to doing the final animation part of my schedule, I will have more time to work on it since I am trying to do the bulk of my work for one of my other classes within the next month. And I can’t wait for that time.

Week 4 - Planning the Production
Thinking through how I’m going to tackle the objective of producing my film was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I think most of the difficulty came from figuring out how long it would take me to draw the whole thing because that means that I needed to make revisions to my animatic according to the feedback I received last week. And that was truly the most time consuming thing. I had to figure out the simplest way to draw the actions I was trying to convey while going through all of my panels again to figure out which areas needed improvement.Â
Once I fixed the timing on the animatic, then I could finally get to labeling every sequence and shot and using it that to plan out when I would work on which part and how long it would take me to work on it. After planning everything, I decided to play around with the colors for my animatic and came out with the bottom two pictures shown above. They show a basic representation of the lighting that I am going for throughout the film. The cinderblock prison room is supposed to be super dark where things are almost indiscernible except for the character and their actions and the outside is supposed to be covered in the golden sunlight since the sun is “setting”. The coloring may look slightly different when I am actually doing the production, but this is the overall look I am going for.

Week 3 - Storyboarding
This is a screenshot from my animatic, it’s one of the panels from my storyboard that I felt best matched my mood at the end of this week. I’m not depressed like that character is supposed to be, but I did feel like I was a little stressed and in a rush to draw my panels. I told myself that I should start it at the beginning of this week, but alas, working on other assignments throughout the weekend that I thought was due on Monday (one of them actually wasn’t but I got ahead), apparently requires sleeping and relaxing afterward in order to function better. I never would have thought of that (LOL).Â
But overall, I was able to finish a rough version of my animatic by the deadline. I’ll probably fix it up in the upcoming week because there are some panels that I am not satisfied with and I want it to look a little less messy and for the lines to be much cleaner and thicker in some places. I have also found that while drawing the animatic, that I was able to simplify the actions even more so I intend to edit my script to match the actions reflected in the animatic. But finishing up a rough version lifts a weight off my shoulders because I can then plan out how long it will take me to produce it into a nicer looking animation within this semester.

Week 2 The Script - Details, Details, Details
Link to View PDF of script:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/17yfpzU8q2J2_WdyCbqvf6KCatRSi3sOG/view?usp=sharing
Wow, where do I start? It’s the end of the third week of the semester already. That literally flew by. Which would put me in a panic even more considering that means time is ticking down towards when I have to start the actual production of this film I’m working on.
I have decided to pursue my newer idea (not the idea that I devised and storyboarded in ACM 321 last semester unfortunately) because despite not having an animatic of it, I think that it would be much simpler and faster to accomplish because it lacks a lot of things that make my first idea more complex (color, dialogue, multiple assets). However, this also means that I needed to write out a script of the events that happen in this film.
When putting together this idea last week, I already had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to happen, but to think of what specifically happens is much more difficult. I did write my two and a quarter page script fairly quickly, but this was after deliberating for a whole week on what events will happen in the story. On top of that, when taking the screenwriting class, I have discovered that one of my biggest challenges is word usage. Like many other people, I tend to use the same words over and over again which does not sound good, so I had to be careful not to do that when writing. And I am also the type of person, who if you actually had a full blown conversation with in real life, would eventually get to this point where I’m trying to describe something and then I stop and think or say out loud, “what was that word again?” So trying to come up with words that convey exactly what I mean is pretty hard for me, but I did the best I could. I tried my best to write this script that probably could have been succinctly told within half a page, but those details of each action of the character is important.
But I find the fact that I finished writing out the script exciting because now I actually have all these visual ideas of how the shots will be composed in the film running through my head and that will make it so much easier to produce when I get to it. I can’t wait to get the storyboarding stage so that I can get out all of the main shots that I’m thinking of. I would have drawn it out this week, but I had other time-consuming assignments to work on and I would have been doing it traditionally instead of digitally because I didn’t reacquire Storyboard Pro yet and I’d rather not draw those shots out two times.

Week 1 Story Pitch - The Ideas Behind the Ideas
I could be exaggerating, but I have never felt so stuck on ideas before in my life. It seems to be easier, but it is just really difficult to think of a simple but meaningful story idea that can be told within one to two minutes. Having taken storyboarding last semester, I already had one idea down, but to concoct a second one out of thin air was like asking me to devote a whole night to brainstorming ideas, which is essentially what I did.
Throughout the week where I had to create the two story pitches, I kept trying to decide what I wanted the second story to be about. It wasn’t until I went back to my reliable source of media: music. There’s been several times in the past where if I didn’t really know what to do, I just looked to the lyrics in some of my favorite songs that would create nice visuals in my head. This idea in particular was inspired by a mixture of songs from the same artist and album (All Time Low, Future Hearts). I recall using a couple of the same songs that inspired this idea to create a drawing that I made for ART 101 back in high school, so I know that the lyrics in those songs are really strong for me. In referring to the lyrics to some of these songs, I have also found that the meaning behind the story I created is actually reflective of some very deep and dark thoughts that I sometimes have when I’m feeling down. So not only did the songs inspire my story idea, but it also was able to evoke something personal and emotional to me which I find to be simply amazing.
After this basic, story idea came to me, then came the part where I had to flesh out some other basic details like some specific events and what the character is like. That took some time because I wanted to decide how this story would be instigated to begin with. I had the middle of the plot, the goal and the ending down, but how to start it off was not as obvious to me, so I had to decide for myself on how I wanted that to go. I had to scroll through the internet for pictures that help to convey the mood and tone of my story which is much more difficult than you think if you don’t have a specific thing to type into the search bar. And this part of my process of creating my pitch goes for both ideas since I didn’t have much good visual references for my first idea. Hint, hint, sometimes it’ll be easier to draw your own, but since I didn’t even have an idea of what I was looking for, I don’t know if I would have an idea of what to draw.
In the end, both of my story ideas have a certain meaning to me. The first one is my way of expressing my fashion design side and tapping into the girly and feminine part of my personality. The second idea kind of captures one aspect of the turmoil of thoughts that I have when I feel down and insecure and a little scared and worried of what’s to come in the future. They both mean something to me and I don’t know if I’d be able to decide which idea to stick with for the rest of this semester because while I was so sure that I would do the first idea, the new idea I came up with sounds pretty interesting for me to try and create.
(In case you wanted to know, because I was being kind of vague, the songs that inspired my second idea are called Runaways, Cinderblock Garden, and Bail Me Out.)
