Shit, our boy was hyperfixated. Does that count?
"I bet you can't sit quiet long enough to catch a fish" you are speaking to a man who sat smoking in silence staring at the tits of a dying stede bonnet for a full hour when he very much had other shit to do

Thank you @davidjenks and crew for doing so boldly what other tv shows don't have the courage to do. It means everything. Especially at a time when work isn't guaranteed or equitable. I really treasure this story. ♥️

I really dig that change is the main antagonist of season 2. We've got the golden age of piracy just starting to show the signs of waning. We've got 2 lovestruck tenderonis in the throes of self discovery with a gulf growing between them. Their self actualizations are at odds with each other because they have opposing relationships to pirating. Ed's eager to quit pirating while Stede is just ascending into it. Even though they adore each other, their goals don't match.
Ed's burnt out and traumatized from being Blackbeard. He got a taste of stability with Stede and wants to feel safe more than anything. Stede is traumatized from a lifetime of ridicule. He got a taste of validation from each adventure and welcomes more of it. They're growing in opposite directions.
David Jenkins said season 2 was gonna explore a more mature love. Like relationships in your 20s. The stakes are higher than infatuation. Sex can't mend everything. And what do you do when the love of your life has growth that challenges yours? How do you balance loving yourself with loving another? How can you love each other in a way that's healthy for both people?
To love the sea as she must be loved, requires change.

I think this person understands the show and David Jenkins' intention. DJ said season 2 would be about love in your 20s. Season 2 Ed and Stede are discovering their own identities. And right now they love each other, but their wants in life don't match. Who they are becoming individually is growing them apart. You can love someone, but also fall in love at the wrong time in someone's life. What happens when the person you love changes in ways that you can't keep up with? And sex isn't a cure all for nuanced interpersonal problems. I appreciate that DJ subverted that romcom trope.
it's also worth remembering, right, that ed and stede both wanted that night. ed gives stede a nod before stede kisses him. he kisses back enthusiastically. he goes to bed with stede. we see him sitting a little shyly, on stede's bed - still fully dressed, even, where stede's lost his shirt.
look at how achingly tender that face is. it's ed wanting to take care of stede the way no one took care of him; it's stede wanting to protect ed where he's failed in the past. it's a near-death situation drawing the love and need and desire out of them like bleeding a fever. it's accompanied by a romantic song. the imagery we're giving is fireworks. it's fucking fireworks for them.
the morning after, ed makes breakfast in bed. shares with stede the beautiful moment of his mermaid vision, which is an incredible show of vulnerability. you see the first sign of ed Having A Realization when stede says avoiding near-death situations isn't likely in their line of work.
then they go out to the republic of pirates, but ed takes stede out of the town and into the countryside, to a place where he feels safe. ed high-fives a child who isn't afraid of him. stede tells ed about writing him love letters. they're having a great day together, they're laughing, they're having fun.
it's not really until after ed sees stede becoming famous, until he sees stede stepping into the role of The Pirate, that he starts to pull away. jackie says he's trying to be a regular dude, and that sounds good to ed. trying something new. he wanders off to go watch fishermen and these shots are weird until you see that he's focusing on the twine the fish are caught up in - just like the twine he left stede on their breakfast tray, just like the twine he wrapped up his leathers in. and stede, who is feeling accepted and powerful and capable for the first time in his life, pulls back too.
they each want to be something the other is trying desperately to leave behind. how does anyone reconcile loving someone who loves the parts of yourself you hate the most?
when the fireworks clear, all you have left is smoke.
for ed and stede to find something real, something they can hang onto, they're going to have to put in the work. that's how you build the happily ever after. brick by brick.
#this shit got me feeling bittersweet#I wanna see my tenderoni jabronis happy together#it's gonna take work#i love the journey tho#ofmd#gentlebeard#blackbonnet#ofmd s2 spoilers

The best take on Ed's motivations that I've read.
ed throws out his leathers because the night before was the last straw. no more near-death experiences. no more watching your lover be tortured. no more strangers with grudges happening upon you in an hour of joy. no more killing. no more watching the man you love destroy himself by killing. he's tired. he's done. he wants to take it slow. he wants breakfasts in bed and chaste kisses in the moonlight and learning how to sit with himself. he wants safety, for him and stede, because it's becoming too much (it's been too much for a while now), and it was different when it was just him, when the only life he needed to concern himself with was his, which he didn't care too much about anyway, but his heart is bleeding now.
but the man he loves isn't at that same point, he's just starting, he's just gotten a taste of infamy, and ed knows what it feels like but he also knows that the high comes with a crash, and what's he meant to do? he's scared. he's just coming to terms with the fact that he wants to live, to chase the quiet, boring ideal of a normal life, but stede killed a man for the first time last night and didn't talk about it, and ed's been there, he knows what it's like, but stede wouldn't talk about it, and they made love, and maybe that was a comfort in substitute, but what now?
ed's heart is bleeding, and he can't keep being asked to stay in this limbo, in a shadow of his name, and he can't keep being asked to see stede in these situations. it hurts in a way that's different, raw, and he throws out his leathers but he still doesn't know who he is, doesn't know how to piece together the things he wants into a cohesive whole, and seeing stede settling into this new version of himself, becoming something closer to what ed is trying desperately to shed, the parts of himself he hated, it hurts. and he's thinking maybe he won't be able to have everything he wants. he throws out the leathers and it feels good, and maybe that has to be enough.

So I've been in fandom where top bottom discourse was insufferable and i still think it's weird to obsess over, which makes it so funny to me that ofmd chose to imply in subtle and unsubtle ways that stede topped ed. Like. They absolutely didn't need to weigh in, fandom's got this, but it's funny to me that like. Showrunner David Jenkins has an opinion on it and the writing team scripted it and costuming dept had stede take his rings off and Ed keep his on.

ed is absolutely panicking in 2x7 bc he’s seeing stede having the time of his life being a famous pirate and he’s genuinely happy for stede but also he wants out of this life and he’s afraid stede will choose piracy over him and so he’s leaving first before stede can leave him again, all of which is bc deep down ed still thinks he’s unlovable and he’s scared to get hurt by stede again and he’s handling everything very badly
all that being said
the fact that ed has already decided that he can’t choose piracy for stede’s sake is so important to me
piracy was slowly killing ed long before stede entered the picture. and now that ed’s decided that he wants warmth and food and orgasms and he wants to live he’s not going to force himself to do a job that makes him fucking miserable. he still might not think he’s worth love and not worth choosing, but he’s at least moved past thinking he deserves to die. he’s past making himself so miserable that he wants to die. ed still has a lot of work to do but he’s making good progress and i’m proud of him.
