Hey, I managed to save Gortash! Kind of. Sort of. Naaah, not really. I simply knocked poor baby out with non-lethal attack right before fishing the Megamind out of her swamp. Nursed him back to full health, so he did look more than alive: jerked his foot and yelped funny when I threw healing potions at him. And, even after the netherstone withdrawal, both of his hands remained intact. Declawed, but intact.

And that's it. No tragic death cutscenes like for the other members of the unholy trinity, no journal updates, no "regicide" inspirations, no reactions from the companions at all – even Karlach didn't throw a tantrum, and her "Encounter Gortash" quest kept hanging in the log. Nothing happened, the archduke just lied down to take a nap – he had a tough week after all.

Yes, I know, the game still "saw" him as dead. But at least I didn't have to watch my favorite character die in the most pathetic and anticlimactic way (pretty sure that the whole "one-shotted by the brain" thing was not originally intended and most likely was just a quick solution for wrapping the game up). Most importantly, I could imagine him waking up safe and sound, looking around and saying: "Gods below, what the hells did I get myself into? Should've sticked to arms dealing and slave trade like all normal people", and then leaving to live his best life. Probably not without Durge.
