what a great day to remember that we should not colonize mars, the whole concept is anthropocentric, imperialist, unrealistic and just weird, and the idea of establishing the same capitalistic systems that have turned out to be our downfall on another planet instead of solving problems on earth is so incredibly short-sighted and power fantasy driven that it makes me want to eat glass. the exploration of outer space should always be expressively and only for the benefit of all humankind, not to fill the pockets of some billionaires with a god complex. fuck elon musk all my homies hate elon musk

“The mind, he reflects, is like a house — thoughts which the owner no longer wishes to display, or those which arouse painful memories, are thrust out of sight, and consigned to attic or cellar; and in forgetting, as in the storage of broken furniture, there is surely an element of will at work.”
- Margaret Atwood, Alias Grace

just because this deserves its own post:
dressmakers, tailors, cosplayers, historical costumers, and generally any people who sew are artists
people who work with fiber (knitting, crocheting, etc.) are artists
embroiderers are artists
weavers are artists
lacemakers are artists
shoemakers are artists
leatherworkers are artists
textile, clothing, and fiber arts are still art forms, even though they’ve historically been devalued in many societies
credit. all. artists.

“It was love she sickened at. It was the enslavement, the self-abasement, the self-deception. That struck her. She saw the danger, all right; she read the flaw. Headlong hopefulness, readiness, need.”

- L. Charce

The thing about aesthetic is that you don’t have to ask to be a part of it or fulfill any requirements. You just have to post whatever you feel like, tag it as such, and you’re in.
Don’t have live close enough to the woods for cottagecore? Tea, books, flowers, hijabs. Don’t have the wardrobe or college for dark academia? Candles, libraries at night, computers, notebooks. Don’t want to or can’t deal with dying, piercing, or tattooing for punk? There are thousands of ways to be punk without it.
Aesthetic is what you make it. Mix, match, invent, and invite yourself in.

I feel like it’s important that we don’t constrain ourselves, and force ourselves into a narrow box in which we do not fit for the sake of the “aesthetic.” It’s fine to take inspiration from aesthetics, as well as to throw yourself completely into them, but it isn’t a requirement of you. Take part in Dark Academia if it makes you happy, but never let the constraints and limitations of an “aesthetic” change the little things about yourself that are intrinsic to your character. It’s ok to fidget and it’s ok to have trouble focusing. It’s ok to wear bright blue and listen to Panic! At the Disco, and it’s ok to do all of these things while taking part in an aesthetic movement or culture. It’s doesn’t make you any less dark academic. It makes you simply yourself, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Confession: Dark Academia and ADHD
So, I’ve been into the dark academia aesthetic for a few months know and I love it. I enjoy learning about philosophy, ancient history, and the color palette is amazing.
But sometimes, probably because my ADHD, but I find myself attracted to the very opposite of what I think of as ‘dark academia’. I love punk rock (Panic! at the Disco), bright colors (not neon, but think bright purple, royal blue, salmon, turquoise), and really sugary foods. And sometimes I hate myself for fidgeting in my chair because it does not fit with what I’ve learned/come to know as ‘dark academia.’
Then again, I’ve come to have a very rigid idea of dark academia as a ‘scholarly person wearing dark clothing and sipping black coffee while reading something they’re super passionate about.’ When I’m not medicated (which is another way of saying ‘not-caffeinated’), I feel like I don’t fit that.
Have you all ever felt like your personality contradicts the aesthetic that you wish your life could be like?

Sometimes academia is listening to podcasts and audiobooks on topics you're passionate about, because long repetitive hours of work dominate the vast majority of your waking life.
