Samantha Stepnowski and Jasmine Wiggins
Samantha Stepnowski, is a Studio Arts minor and her installation is titled, “Making Sense of Common Complexities.” She mostly focused on doing detailed sketches with a fine point pen or charcoal drawings. She conducted a studied on subjects that had lots of muscle definition or things that had crisp features. Doing this was very important to her because she expressed how she one day would like to become a Medical Illustrator. Her pieces featured a variety of different ways and techniques to conveying depth. One piece that stood out in particular was the pointillism Iguana drawing. I thought the use of the different size of the dots really highlighted the amount of time and focus she put into the piece. It is clear that she is very passionate about her craft and has an eye for noticing the subtleties in the objects or animals in the images she was recreating.
Overall I think that her art was very whimsical and relaxing to look at. It was very clean and crisp. She portrayed a variety of objects which I think showcased her versatility and her abilities to depict images with different textures.
Jasmie Wiggins is clearly very talented digital artist. Her installation was entitles “The Graphic Escape.” She explained the process of how she worked with a “client,” and listened to what they wanted and drafted up things based on what the message they wanted to get across. She explained that since she had to be a creative thinker but still maintain a level of professionalism in the piece. She worked on creating posters and flyers for “Family S.T.E.M Night.” I think that her pieces were very effective in communicating the event and are good for advertising because they are eye-catching and colorful. She included her sketches and her notes, which I thought was very unique. I think that including that element informs the viewer that designing on the computer is a process and requires lots of precision and preparation.
Overall, her project was very effective in communicating the massage that the client wanted to get across. I think that the posters were very aesthetically please and really draws in peoples attention. The colors she used were vibrant and calming, which was very eye-catching. I really enjoyed her work and how honest she was in her process, because it looked very effortless.

Joyce Yu Jean Lee-Artist Talk
Joyce Yu Jean Lee is a digital artist originally from Dallas, Texas who went on to study at The University of Pennsylvania and received a Bachelor of Arts degree. She later went on to study at MICA where she received her Masters in Fine Arts. Joyce now is a teacher at the Fashion Institute of Technology Jersey City but she continues to travel and create in addition to perusing her career. Joyce says that the way she was taught and raised has a huge influence in her work and creation process. She also draws a lot of inspiration from different cultures as well as her own. She is a social justice advocate and therefore she tries to bring awareness to current events and issues but does it in a way that she doesn't project too much of her own views or political opinions. She rather use her pieces to draw people in though aesthetics or her performances pieces and use them as vessels of communication.
In Joyce’s process, she highlights the importance of gathering information and knowing exactly what it is that you wish to create. She is a very intentional artist and it is apparent that it is important to her to be completely thorough. She likes to incorporate elements of different cultures and also wants each of her pieces to be profound and moving to those who view it.
Overall I like her work because I feel like her story is inspiring and she really makes it seem possible to follow ones dreams to become an artist. Especially when one takes into consideration that she decided that this is what she wanted to pursue after she finished her undergrad. I enjoy that she uses her pieces as a mean of communicating cultural difference while at the same time carrying out her passion for art.

Artist Research: Yayoi Kusama
Yayoi Kusama, is a Japanese artist who refers to herself as a “obsessional artist.” She was born on March 22, 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan. She began painting and creating at a very young age. She had very little formal training at the Kyōto City Specialist School of Arts, however she drew information from hallucinations that appeared to her in the form of dots. Due to family issue and her desire to pursue art, she moved to New York City. She transformed her style from Minimalistic to Pop Art, and Performance Art. Kusama uses obsessive reputation in many of her pieces, it has become almost a trademark of hers since 1960. She eventually moved back to Japan in 1973 where she lived in a mental hospital.
The piece I thought was particularly inspiring was the "Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity," which is a part of the infinity mirror rooms. This room gives the illusion that there are lanterns floating everywhere as far as the eye can see. I think that this installation relates to my projects ideas because it play on the three-dimensional aspect I was going for. It also give the illusion of depth and the lanterns are all staggered at different distances from the viewer. In my piece, I planned on creating different layers of the face so that it appeared that things were further and closer when looked at from a side angle.
I that this artist is trying to create an optical illusion. In doing that she creates the idea of “infinite space” by using the mirrors and in a way, it manipulates time through art. Her pieces are endless and go on forever. On her website, she describes how her pieces with mirror are meant to suggests a celebration of life and aftermath. I think that it is important because I think that especially in today’s world we get lost or stopped in time, but in reality, things continue to move on with or without us. This could be symbolic of the world most young people live in today, this room is a “virtual room” with mirror that make it go on forever. In a way, it is suggests that today’s youth is always on the phone or on the internet.
In think that some major take always from this piece come from its overall meaning as well as the reasons why Yayoi got into art. She used her hallucinations and turned it into something that was able to inspire and influence many people. That in itself is very genuine, raw, and cannot be recreated. I think that now I will have a whole new perspective for this project. I think that I need to be very precise, and intentional with my work.

Final project proposal
In this final project I intend to focus on the concept of how today we control our image and the way in which we choose to depict ourselves. I interpreted the digital ages the concept of self to be like a portrait. Today many portraits aren't paintings, rather are selfies. Hours are spent choosing the perfect selfie and much of its attention is gained online or through social media. This has become almost essential to todays generation and is now engrained in our culture.
In this project I plan to create a phone and simulate someone taking selfies, and depict the process of how we control our image. I want to use a few photos, and manipulate them so it appears as the action is happening in front of us. Then I hope to be able to create the photo either “escaping” screen or some other type of unexpected ending. I also plan on making the screen crack to symbolize the breaking of the old age to the new age to highlight the shifting into a world centered around technology.
I plan to build on my past processes by making this video loop, and “punching” a hole in the images to layer them on top of each other. As well as use a “flash” similar to the one I used in my “graffiti chill” video. This will hopefully create a more convincing “camera flash.” I hope to create a more intricate piece and build on my skills that I have learned through working on previous works. I also hope that this will refine my techniques and allow me to create a piece that has a bit more action in it. Which in turn make it more aesthetically pleasing for the audience, while still holding their attention.

Reading response: Identify Yourself by Krystal South
The article “Identify Yourself” by Krystal South, focuses on the relationship people have with technology. This article highlights that in today’s world people have become dependent on technology and it has been designed to assist us in our everyday lives. However, South has identified that computers and programing software are unable to express emotion and are unable to make decisions based on empathy. The idea of history is also brought to our attention in this article, and how what makes us real is the sum of our experiences, “history makes us human.” The author uses the program ELIZA as an example to highlights the differences between “choice” and “deciding”. Deciding can be computed and can be programed into a computer, where as choosing to do something is a matter of judgment beyond a computers capacity due to its complexity.
Technology is constantly progressing and changing. The more technology evolves the more we develop a dependency on it. In the next portion of the article it points out the notion that as humans we tend to view the internet as being “alive,” or “real,” rather than as stored content ready at our disposal. In generations to come, one can assume that there will be a even greater dependency on technology simply because youth today are growing up in a world where the internet has always existed. Because of this, our way of thinking has changed over time. We can consume mass amounts of information at a time, comparable to that of a machine. With the internet providing us dozens of different ways to obtain various amounts of information just by typing in a few key words, this has inevitably allowed it to become apart of our identity.
Over all I think this article does a good job of summing of the relationship between society today and the world online and how the two are colliding. The idea that “I don’t go no the internet; I am in the Internet and I am always online,” is a very real and relatable statement to anyone who owns a smartphone or a computer. Technology is a key component in our live and the more technology evolves we evolve and adapt with it.

1.Chalk street art :
2.Waterfall Sketch :
The idea for this project came from the chalk scene I saw above. I wanted to create the idea of a secret or hidden waterfall. I thin that finding extraordinary things in everyday spaces can really help to highlight the little things in life that are seldom appreciated. In doing this I hope to portray a scene that can serve as a realization to really stop and appreciate the beauty in nature and in the world around us.
I plan on using photoshop, after effects to play a video of a waterfall coming-out of a crack in the wall (as seen in the sketch above). I plan on making a looped cinema-graph because I want it to be continuous to give the feeling that it is an actual waterfall in the wall. Wall will either be brick or concrete, depending on the background that it will be projected against.
I think it would look best in the space near the outside of the theater rather than outside. Simply because there are more solid walls in that space and to project brick patter onto brick might be very difficult to line up.
Overall I hope that this project will be able to be realistic but also maintain some mysterious or dreamy qualities. I am worried that if I do draw the cracks in the wall by hand it will begin to look too messy or not evoke the feelings in intend for it to.

Jean- Michel Basquiat
Jean- Michel Basquiat was a non-traditional Graffiti artist. He was born in December 1960 and died on August 1988. He was born and raised in NY, and is of Haitian and Puerto Rican decent. He primarily focused on "suggestive dichotomies" and used his work as social commentaries. He also tended to incorporate other works of art such as poetry painting, drawing, as well as abstract images.
Basquiat incorporated elements of history into his pieces. He also tackled deeper issues within society and spoke to the public through his creations. I particularly find his work to be both interesting aesthetically as well as empowering because of the greater meaning embedded in his work.

Art:21Krzysztof Wodiczko
In the video Art:21 Krzysztof Wodiczko, He describes the unique form of art he creates. He creates 21st century art on large scales using projectors. He combines art, video technology and architecture to compose his monuments worldwide. The pieces of art he creates blend between the foreground and background. I think that his work is creative and innovative and the connection between already existing architecture create a unique piece that serves as a universal wonder. In his article he also take about returning reverence to monuments and sparking conversation because otherwise they become obsolete.

“A Time Apart” by Paul Chan
The article by Paul Chan “A Time Apart”it describes the Greeks two notions of time. Chrono’s, a sense of empty time beyond linear pressing and Kairos is time full of significance and promise. They are not opposites however, Kairos is typically associated with art, this can be attributed to Plato and his ideas. Art that is kariological, is not distinctive from other art, however it can be distinguished in the way it is explained and the feeling that are evoke that set it apart.
Chronos is describes as the the notion of time that remains static. There is often little change and it without content. Chronos lacks meaning or demotion, and therefore is characterized as lacking “fullness.” However, Chronos, can change into Kairos. Kairos occurs at the moment in which there is the most potential for change. It is the key point in which the most impact can be made, thus giving time “fullness.”
Though the two seem like opposites they really go hand in hand. the text describes the relationship between the two in saying “Chronos is that in which there is kairos and kairos is that in which there is little chronos.” Kairos can also be achieved at the right or ideal moment, it isn't kept but is unleashed.
In the connection of art , the two contribute to the symmetry of the piece. There is also an emphasis on the connection between mortality and time. This mostly resonates with the pieces that remain timeless rather than the pieces of art that are only exciting for a short amount of time. In realizing that all things come to an end it becomes evident the appreciation one must developed for the time that we are allowed. This can be characterized as Karios converting into Chronos, creating the idea that every moment is of substance until it ends and becomes static and empty again.

Reflection project 1
During the creation of the 3 Cinemagraph’s that I made, I feel as though it allowed me to learn more about what I can do on photoshop. I found I work best. in the day time, when my mind is still fresh.
The techniques I used were using the mask and punching a hole into the mask with the quick selection tool. I think that it worked really well, and was more effective than deleting and erasing everything by hand.
The concept I had was to take mundane moments and draw attention to how intricate they can be. I think that this is clearly communicated to the viewer.
I could improve this piece by making the 3rd one (Captain America) more seamless, however I think that the other than that it came out very nicely.
I think that I deserve a A-
