Here's your solution!!!!!!
Had my suspicions but I have finally confirmed it this morning: The rival Pokémon Go team I have been beefing with, whose gym's total annihilation I have incorporated into my morning routine, is actually a group of local elementary school students

I grew up with a grandma who quilted, but she’d never been interested in passing along the hobby, so when she finally kicked it I was the grandkid who got all her materials, ‘cause I was the only one who knew how to use a sewing machine. Then, in 2015, a friend had a baby and I figured I’d make her a quilt, ‘cause how hard could it be?
oh

my

god

Luckily I am the stubbornest human alive, ‘cause I never woulda finished otherwise. I didn’t know what I was doing, didn’t know the terms to look up how to do anything, I musta reinvented the wheel like eight times and it took ten months, BUT I DID IT.

Figured I’d suffered enough and would never do it again and now I’m on quilt #9 smdh
————————–
I’m hyperventilating.
Holy shit. Holy SHIT.
This is INCREDIBLE.
Oh my god.
I’ve gotta go lay down holy shit look at this how do we just walk by other human beings every day and live our separate lives when there’s a person sitting next to you on the train or in line for coffee who goes home and makes things like this what even IS being human holy shit.
GOOD FUCKING JOB.

reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics

College sports and the Civil War
A fic I was reading recently mentioned the rivalry and hatred between Missouri and Kansas, and I started thinking about it.
It certainly can be a big thing (you don't call a place "Misery" and heckle people for living there without some reason), although today it's mostly put down to the rivalry between the Kansas University Jayhawks and the Missouri University Tigers.
But that's not really why this got started.
Really it all got started way back in the 1800s, pre-Civil War.
The Kansas Territory was up to become a state. We just had one choice to make. Was slavery allowed there?
There was a vote. Abolitionists and slavery proponents came from all over to try and sway it to their side or another. As Missouri was a slave state and our only neighbor at the time, a lot of the slavers came from there. Some people tried claiming to be residents to vote fraudulently.
The different sides ended up choosing two cities to hang out in and support as the potential capitol. Lecompton and Lawrence (funnily enough, Lawrence is the home to KU. Remember that?). They came up with different constitutions, and disagreed over the results of the votes. Violently.
Historians estimate that up to 200 people died in both states as we underwent such a period of guerilla warfare and bloodshed that Kansas became known as "Bloody Kansas". John Brown was part of it, if you recognize that name.
Our state sized civil war sometimes gets called "The Tragic Prelude", because that's what it was. We survived, only to end up fighting still more for four years. That's why Kansas hates Missouri. Much like some of the other states, we've had border issues, but those are nowhere near the real reason.
As I recalled all this information, I started to wonder. How many college rivalries are just states carrying on with their drama and hatred from the American Civil War or something else over a hundred years ago? I'm pretty sure the Virginias are another example.
FUN FACT:
Remember how I mentioned Lawrence, Kansas? It was (along with Topeka, our current capitol, and Leavenworth where John Brown was) a major hotspot for antislavery and one of the potential capitols. A university got founded there, way back in 1866, shortly after the American Civil War's end. Efforts had been being made to begin work on it all the way back in 1855, after all of the hubbub had begun.
When the time came to pick a name for the sports teams and such, I'm sure that nothing suggested for KU could compete with the title of the Jayhawks, after the Jayhawkers who fought for freedom throughout Kansas University's founding efforts. Because that's one of the things people here called Free-Staters, inspired by some local myth and legend.
So in a way, when it's the Jayhawks v. the Tigers, it's a repeat of exactly what happened all those years ago.

Damian: *peaks head above dining table* Baba
Bruce: *sighs, gives Damian the rest of his incredibly juicy fruit salad* Hn
Damian: *scampers off with bowl, Titus hot on his tracks*
Bruce: *watches with a faint smile, sipping on his water*
Bruce is totally a mom the way he just lets his kids take his food, just like my mom. They give him one look and Bruce is ready to feed them himself
