Invi frowned. She had her eyes on asking either Ira or Ava, or even Luxu, but now that it seemed that they would not be choosing who they would be working with, she felt a brief moment of worry. Invi did not know all of the other apprentices that well, not yet. 

Then again, that seemed to be the very point of this lesson- to get to know their fellow apprentices better. The Master did say that they would be working with somebody outside of their comfort zones.

She looked at the others, trying to guess who she might be paired off with. Likely not Ira, but maybe Gula... or Aced?

She looked over at Aced, biting her lip, none too certain about working with him. Having not even a set opinion on the other apprentice as a person. Invi simply did not know much about him, and it made her nervous.

“Well, ready or not, I am going to start listing off the pairs now.” The Master continued. 

Invi could almost hear the implied drum roll echoing in her head. 

“Luxu and Gula. Ira with Ava Aaaaand Aced, you’re with Invi.”

Invi frowned as the Master and Luxu entered the study, finding herself very inpatient to hear what the master had to say, but also not about to ask him to get to the point. It felt rude, and it was unlike her to show in-patience so freely. She was simply going to have to wait and hear what he had to say.

“Tough crowd, eh?” The Master further teased- it seemed to amuse no one, not that Invi was paying the most attention to everyone else herself. All of her focus was on the Master and what he had to say, it was important that she be listening to him after all.

She held in a yawn, fighting the feeling of tiredness that hit her like a rather hefty bag of bricks. Maybe the early studying had been unnecessary. Well, it was too late to take any of that time spent back now. What if she had not actually stressed enough anyways? The very thought had her wide awake again as the Master began to explain the day’s lesson.

“Today you will be doing a scavenger hunt!” He gestures in the way he commonly did. “I’ll be separately giving you each clues, and then I’ll let you loose to find and bring back all of it.”

Aced’s jaw dropped. Surely the Master was joking. A scavenger hunt? What was the point of that lesson? Fortunately, the Master was quick to explain, although Aced was not pleased with the answer.

“Oh and don’t think you’ll be out doing it all ourselves! You’ll be in pairs!”

Several of the apprentices, including Aced, cast glances at each other, already picking out who they wanted to be their partner for this scavenger hunt. Only for their Master to shut down the potential partnerships.

“Ah-ah, the point of this exercise is to get you guys to work with somebody outside of your comfort zones!” He declared, “I’ll be picking the pairs.” Aced let out a groan.

Aced did not like that answer and sat back with a frown on his face. He glanced over to Ava who shook her head, indicating that she had no idea either. After a few moments Gula arrived and took his seat as well, prompting the discussion all over again. Nobody had any guesses.

Only now did Aced notice that Luxu was not present either, but he assumed that he was probably with the Master. The assumption was proven correct when the Master entered, followed by Luxu.

“I know it’s early but you guys are allowed to smile, you know!” The Master teased.

Aced did not smile and did not bother to check if anyone else did either. He just wanted the Master to get to the point.

“Huh?” Invi turns to look at over at him. To be honest, she had sort of been spacing out in her wait for the Master to give the day’s lesson. 

“Oh, Aced... Good morning.” The Master had been oddly vague about the contents of their lesson for today. Of course, that was to say that he had been just as odd and vague as she had come to expect. She hadn’t thought much of it, having hoped that at least she might be prepared if she stayed focused and on task. Whatever it was he had in mind, she tried not to worry about it. 

There was simply no use stressing over it anyway, or so she told herself, even as she had woken up extra early this morning doing exactly that.

“Well, I’m not sure...”

Aced was glad to not be the last one to arrive in the Master’s study, despite his slow morning it seemed that he had still managed to at least Gula to the day’s lesson. Odd though, the Master had said yesterday that today’s lesson was going to be different than normal.

He took his seat and leaned over to Invi and Ira, surely the two of them were just as confused as Aced.

“What do you think is going on?” He asked.
