Milo has expected anything except money to punch him in the chest that morning. By the time he had bent down to help her gather the funds, she had already collected most of it and presented them to him again.

“Don’t worry, Violet, this happens all the time,” he assured her, taking the money into his own hands. He approximately divided the money in half, holding out what he believed to be the slightly larger portion for her to accept. 

“I get 50% grace from the school on damaged textbooks. Murphy’s Law, and all…” He explained with a smile. That was a lie, an absolute untruth, but if she wouldn’t take it all back, he was fine with just giving back a portion.

        Her eyes filled with uncertainty. Something told her  -  her gut feelings most likely  -  told her that it was some sort of excuse to give her half of the payment back. After hesitating, thinking and probably gawking like a fool, she took the money back.  Violet returned the smile.

        ❝  You’re lucky. I wish I could get a 50% grace  -  but such is life, huh? Are you free lunch time. . . ? I’m having trouble understanding this part of chemistry homework. I really have to repay you somehow!  ❞ 

        Violet didn’t like feeling as if she were using him. That may not be the case but it was still a thought that nudged its way into the back of her mind. So far, this guy had been helpful and the least she could do was show him how much she appreciated his effort to help her succeed.
