Even if she couldn't trust him. Even though a part of her thought that maybe he was putting on an act it did little to ease her at seeing him so heartbroken. Maybe she should've just kept this all to herself.

It was only moments before that his touch revolted her thanks to her own thoughts. She puts all of that aside for now and bring him into a hug. One hand wrapping around his shoulders holding him close to her. The other on top of his head softly patting it. She hopes this was enough to comfort him. Even just a bit.

Despite her own hurt. She still cared for him and couldn't bring herself to be needlessly cruel. She wanted to believe him. She wanted the things he said to be true. She still loved him after all.

"I'm sorry. It's just... I can't shake this feeling that... something between us is...." She isn't sure how to put it into words, so the sentence quickly dies.

"I love you but... the thought that.... It hurts to be around you and to love you thinking this. I... I don't want to feel this way but... I don't know how to make it go away but... I'm not sure if I can be around you... for now at least."

Even as he spoke from his heart, even though he had told her how much what he felt for her was genuine, it seemed that no matter what he said, she just didn't believe him. In fact, it appeared that she just brushed off his words as if they had little meaning to her.

Had that trust really evaporated that much between them?

Had there even been any trust at all?

Shido was trying to figure out just where in the world he had gone wrong. How he could have failed this badly as a partner, that he had somehow given her the impression that his feelings were rooted in some twisted sense of selfishness.

Even if she says that it was unfair of him to try and prove himself, it did little to erase the feeling of failure that was forming within him.

He could not ease her heart of her worries, reassure her about his true feelings no matter what. It was one of the worst feelings imaginable, and all he could do was set his gaze downward.

"I....I guess it can't be helped, can it..? I suppose...it's really on me for not doing enough to be a decent partner. Even though I gave it my all and showed you that I really do love you for you, it still wasn't enough and I ended up giving you this impression anyway. I am sorry for failing you, for not doing enough, for not being enough."

All he could do in the moment was lower his head and apologize for his perceived failure. The fact that she felt like this in the first place was an indicator of his deficiencies, or his perceived deficiencies as a partner.
