How do you go about coloring your backgrounds? I manage to make linework I like but when it comes to coloring I'm usually overdoing it or doing too little, it doesn't blend with my characters well which makes me scared of full illustrations ;u;

Oh it's always the scariest part of the art for me 😂

I'm comfortable drawing backgrounds, but I'm always weary of how they merge with the actual characters present and this is very much something I'm still trying to improve on. Here's some tricks I tend to follow:

-Try to keep your light source consistent. This isn't about keeping it realistic or forbidding yourself from taking artistic liberty, but try to at least create the illusion that the light sources in the drawing are coming at the environment AND characters from the same directions and are of a similar hue.

-Unless the background is the focus, try to either match OR keep it slightly less detailed than the characters themselves. This is so both you and the viewer of the art doesn't scrutinize it too much by having their attention be overly drawn to it.

Ignore the cutouts, had a layer mishap with the text but I already merged it. Left was supposed to say "FURTHER AWAY=LESS SHADING" LOL

-Add a solid-color layer over the whole picture in either Hard Light, Overlay, or Multiply mode to harmonize your colors and create a consistent ambience.
