He hits his head.

"Ow, fuck."

"You're too tall."

Ichigo frowns down at her, "How do you take me slamming my head against a doorframe and turn it into a way to insult me?"

"One plus one, equals two."

"That makes no sense."

"Since when did anything make sense, Ichigo." Rukia mumbles as they cross the car park, "We just coast through life trying to make things make sense when they absolutely," they get to her car and she pulls the door open, throwing her books across to land unceremoniously in the back seat, "never," she slams the door shut and swings the driver's side open, "do."

Ichigo's eyebrows shoot upwards, "Uh, Ruks?"

She doesn't answer, fiercely gathering her hair into a bun at the top of her head.

"Are you," he bends at the waist to catch her attention, "okay?"

Rukia turns, a hand on her hips, the other leaning against the car, and glares up at him, "It's been weeks."

His hands clench in his pockets, the messenger bag hanging across his chest is suddenly oppressive and the back of his neck prickles with fear, definitely, but more excruciatingly, shame.

He swallows, his Adam's apple bobbing, and takes off his glasses to rub his eyes, "I know."

"If you know, Ichigo, why the hell haven't you done anything about it?"

That, Ichigo doesn't know.

But he tries, anyway.

He sighs, "We were so drunk, Rukia, I didn't know if it-" he looks up at her, "if it meant anything."

She swipes a strand of hair from her face, "We were at a stupid frat party." Rukia crosses her arms, her jumper bunching across her chest, "But I don't kiss just anyone, Ichigo."

Their eyes meet and he stares at her. 

"I thought you might've liked me, or you wanted to like me, and then the next day nothing happened and-"

Ichigo dips and presses his lips to hers, cupping her jaw and pushing her gently against the side of her car. She exhales, wrapping her arms around his neck, and kisses him back.

He grunts and lifts her thighs to come up on either side of him, her skirt riding up between them. Rukia moans when he brushes the outside seam of her underwear, his fingers dipping experimentally underneath to drag along the crease of her thigh.

Her hands flex and grip in his hair as she tries to angle her hips further into his touch. He gets closer, closer to her core when-

"Get a fucking room!"

They part, and Ichigo cuts a glare over his shoulder to see Renji flipping them the bird on his way to his car.

"What are you watching for, you weirdo?"

"Shut up."

Ichigo rolls his eyes, looking back down at Rukia and setting her back on her feet. He doesn't move, instead setting his hands firmly on her hips.

"I'm an idiot, Ruks." He says, "Have you ever seen me go after a chick without, like, her basically slamming me against a wall and having her way with me first?"

She snorts, "You're ridiculous."

He breathes a laugh, combing a hand through his choppy hair, "I like you. A lot. And drunk Ichigo is far less inhibited than," he gestures at himself, "sober Ichigo."

She chuckles, regarding him a moment or two, "Well," she says, clearing her throat, "I think drunk Ichigo is nice, but he's a little sloppy with the snogging." She glances down at his lips, "That was much, much better."

"I mean, I can definitely turn the charm on now that I know you're interested."

"Charm?"

"I'm not just good looks and uncertain romantic advances, you know."

Rukia laughs again, the sound warming him through, "Wanna come home and show me some more charm?"

He cracks a grin, "I'd love to."

As for your question, it was the phrase "he loved her, and it showed" and because I haven't shared words in awhile, here's the context:

It starts with his shoulders. Always strong, always rigid; an immovable object, gentling in the breath he takes and slumping, just so, in relief; an exhale he's been secretly holding in for months.

What follows next is the breath that shapes in a name that isn't hers, and his smile, an abstract thing, a soft smudge of pink lips and white teeth. And Orihime wishes it was enough just to see it, to know that Ichigo's gaze would be brighter than the sun, golden as honey; happy in a way the curve of his mouth could never hope to express.

She wishes it could be enough just to know what it means (that he's more alive than he's ever been these last seventeen months), but.

Hopelessly drawn, she seeks his eyes, and finds them already diverted as always.

No longer aimed at the empty spaces haunted by Rukia's ghost, but at Rukia herself.
