Round one: すいれん, suiren vs Michi

すいれん, suiren (Japanese)

Translation: Water lily

Japanese is spoken by 122 million people in Japan and around 1,5 million people outside of Japan. It used to be considered an isolate, a language related to no other languages, but not anymore. Linguists have found enough difference between Japanese and what used to be considered dialects of Japanese to classify them as their own languages. So now it’s part of the Japonic language family, together with 16 other languages spoken in Japan. Another interesting thing about Japanese is that it has three different scripts.

Motivation: I think it has a very nice pronunciation, refers to something beautiful, and just overall fits the concept it's trying to convey as well as I think it could. Also, the first character in the kanji (the 睡 in 睡蓮, pronounced 'sui' here) sounds like a possible reading of 水 - "water" - here. Reading the actual characters literally would translate to "sleep lotus".

Michi (Spanish)

Translation: Cat/kitty (a colloquial way of saying it versus gato)

Spanish is an Indo-European language belonging to the Romance branch. It’s spoken by 559 million people worldwide, 46,6 million of those in Spain and 74 million as a second language. It’s counted as the second largest language (based on number of native speakers) after Mandarin.

Motivation: It think it’s really fun to say. My Spanish teacher taught my class this word and we would not stop using it.

for complicated medical reasons I'd rather not get into, I'm having a surgery on tuesday (July 4) that's effectively means i can't ever get on testosterone again. I was on it for like 2 years before I had to come off. I'd hoped to start again one day, so this is really upsetting. but unfortunately it comes down to a choice between "being seen as I am" or "retaining the ability to see".

I normally regard such statements as platitudes, but it's be super if someone could tell me something like "trans guys who can't hormonally transition are valid". it turns out i really need to hear it right now.
