I'm 18 and from London. I've been suffering from trichotillomania, dermatophagia & onychophagia for years without knowing what they are and what they are called. I want to help others aswell as myself so feel free to ask me anything. If you have any confessions you want to share with people then submit them to me and I'll post for all to see.

TRICH SURVEY 2013 QUESTIONS: 1. Age: 18 2. Gender: Female 3. From where on your face, head, or body do you pull? My scalp, at the back of my head. 4. For how long have you had problems with hair-pulling? Since I was 11 5. When did you discover that your hair-pulling compulsion is called Trichotillomania? How did you find out? I only found out a few months ago when my mate was talking about a youtube channel that she likes. The girl who makes the channel has trich and has spoken about it. My mate was telling me about this girl and how she has a thing called trichotillomania and not knowing what it was she explained it to me. It was only after she explained it to me that I realised I have it. I never told anyone about it though, so even my mate doesn't realise I have it even though she was the one who told me about it. 6. List any triggers that you are aware of. When I'm bored, stressed or anxious. Feeling the short hairs growing back. 7. Do you know how your pulling originated? For example, did you start by simply scratching, stroking, or searching for hairs that don’t belong? Well I've noticed that my dad touches his hair a lot and I think it started when I would play with my hair out of habit. I played with it one night when I was really stressed and then ended up pulling a hair out. It was that long ago though so I don't really remember. It started when I was in year 7, so I think it was the stress of being in a new school plus a family member dealing with cancer which started it off. 8. Do you experience any other disorders or illnesses? (E.g. Dermatillomania, Trichophagia, Anxiety, Depression, Anorexia, OCD, Diabetes). Yes, I also have a dermatophagia which is worse than my trich. It seems that I always have one or the either and on bad days both. 9. Do any of your family members suffer from a disorder or illness? (If uncertain, do you think they have tendencies towards Anxiety, Depression, OCD, ICD, etc.?). Well I have a family member with schizophrenia. I would also say that I have family members that suffer with anxiety and depression. 10. Do you eat a balanced/healthy diet most of the time? Do you consume sugar and/or caffeine on a daily basis? No, my diet is quite bad. I do eat a lot of junk and consume a lot of sugar and caffeine. 11. Do you find that exercising reduces your urges to pull? I've never tried exercising to help reduce my urges to pull. When I do pull though, I'm always sitting down so maybe being active would help. 12. Do you take medication to help with Trichotillomania? No, I don't take anything for it. 13. Do you feel the need to be organised and in control? I don't feel the need to be organised and in control but there are certain things which I like to be in control of and like to have organised. 14. In what situation (or location) are you most likely to pull? (E.g. In bed, in front of the television, at work, studying, driving). It's always late at night when I'm sitting on my sofa in the living room either whilst I'm watching tv or on my laptop. 15. Do you ever pull in the presence of other people? Yes, but I'm very careful when I do this so that nobody notices. 16. Is your family aware of your Trichotillomania? If so, are they accepting or supportive? No they are not aware that I have trich and I don't plan on telling them anytime soon. 17. Do you have any friends outside of the Internet that you can confide in? I do have a friend that I feel I could talk to about my trich (the one who actually told me what trich was) but I don't really want to talk to her about it. I don't want anyone around me to know, probably because I would think that it would take up a lot more of my life and I don't want it to do that. 18. Have you spoken to a GP or a psychologist about Trichotillomania? If so, would you recommend making an appointment? No and I wouldn't go speak to a GP or psychologist. I don't feel like they would understand and feel that it's better talking to those that have trich. 19. Have you had mostly positive or negative experiences with hairdressers? I wouldn't really say that I've had a positive or negative experience at the hairdressers. 20. Do you think your hair-pulling urges will lessen in the future? Do you see yourself overcoming the disorder? Yes I do think it will lessen in the future. I hope so anyway. 21. Describe the sensations you experience leading up to and/or during a ‘pulling session’. Well pulling is just like a release. I'll be playing and/or touching my hair and will just get an urge to pull. But before I pull I feel all the hairs and pick "the right one" to pull out. When I pull the hair out I have a moment where is feels good and then afterwards I'll regret it. 22. Are there any techniques to reduce pulling, or mask damage, that you have found to be helpful? Not really :/ so if someone wants to message me with techniques to reduce pulling and/or mask damage then that would be great. 23. Do you pull quite regularly, or do you go for days, weeks, even months without any urges? Once I have a urge I will pull quite regularly and all night long and then it's hard to stop. If I haven't had an urge in a while though then I'm fine.
24. Does Trichotillomania effect the way you view yourself? Not really. 25. Are there any books or websites that you would recommend? I would say that tumblr and youtube help the most.

i have this exact thought and it scares me
Does anyone else worry that they’ll finally get their hair back the way they want it, only to lose it again as we get older?
What if, in the 20 years worth of pulling I’ve gone through, I have fast forwarded my hair growth by 20 years? So, say my body is 25 but my hair is that of a 45 year old?
Crazy thoughts. Go to bed lol

Remember
Trich isn’t what defines you. Anxiety/stress are what caused trich in the first place. Get help for your anxiety issues and I promise you the amount you pull will decrease dramatically. Don’t blame trich for the way you are feeling because you will be stuck in the rut forever. Trich is just a category, anxiety is the problem.
