Two American Psycho headcanons that have no basis in canon but are important to ME:

-Tim and Jean are siblings. Tim already has two sisters in canon and I think he deserves another one!!

-David and Patrick childhood friends. That’s it. Just think it’s funny

all i'm saying is that the story opens with establishing their friendship and relationships with evelyn, and then patrick bateman's life spirals after timothy runs off.

so from my timpat BIASED standpoint:

patrick's sense of stability left with timothy price. it completely disrupted his status quo - he couldn't use tim "the most interesting person i know" as a distraction from his suffering. price came back different ("to which something very eerie had obviously happened", the smudge, etc) and so stability doesn't return with price because price is no longer the same person and ALSO because patrick is now too far gone. he doesn't quite know where tim went and (imo PRETENDS that he-) doesn't care because he can't accept that tim would leave in the first place, let alone fathom the idea that he too can have some relief from his shitty life. to patrick, it was a betrayal - of patrick and his lifestyle/world. the connection they once had is gone and so is patrick's connection to reality; he's hallucinating park benches following him around and ATMs giving him orders.

we come full circle, and patrick is more alone than ever.

I am once again thinking about Tim Price and Patrick Bateman.

in American Psycho everyone is oblivious to Patrick's internal suffering (Price comments that he knows Patrick also hates his life, but clearly he's not aware as to just how bad things are.) So it begs the question: Just how much are the people around him suffering?

We know that Courtney, Tim and Luis are struggling, but it's not explored much. As for others, Evelyn is mentioned as being suicidal, in Another Night we find Van Patten drinking heavily, but that's it, really, and it could mean nothing at all.

Everyone is doing copious amounts of cocaine. Everyone is in relationships that they aren't satisfied with. Nobody discusses their issues. Everyone is going out and seeking out casual sex and the trendiest accessories and trying to keep up appearances.

The most honest vulnerability we get from the people around him is from Price in the first few chapters, Luis when he's repeatedly breaking down over Patrick, and Jean talking about how she feels unfulfilled. That's it.

If Patrick is hiding and ignoring his pain through his lifestyle, what are other people hiding; McDermott, for example?

Are they all really as shallow as he makes them out to be?

No way. And there's so much fanfiction potential here precisely because they're depicted so shallowly.
