I know how hard you’ve worked throughout rehearsals, and I know it takes a lot of work to prepare for the big day (or night 🤣). You were one of the first people I’ve interacted with on Tumblr besides Rainbows and Slash, and I’ll never forget how much hope you’ve given me. I can’t really provide an answer on how Toons age because it’s honestly a tricky concept to think about. However, I do have a little something to say about why human characters, such as R.K. Maroon and Eddie Valiant, would address Roger as “son” or “kid”. After doing a little research, I found out that the given terms aren’t really reflections of Roger’s age. Instead, they’re reflections of authority, condescension, and/or familiarity.

The term “son” has been said twice by Maroon (“Take comfort, son. You’re not the first man his wife played patty cake on him.”; “Now, drink this, son. It’ll make you feel better.”). It’s likely a patronizing word to reinforce his position as Roger’s boss and to make the rabbit feel smaller more dependent on him. In fact, it’s a not too unusual way for older authority figures to refer to younger or seemingly less powerful individuals, even if they’re not literally their children. It also kind of highlights the discrimination that Toons experience in the movie.

As for “kid”? Well, Eddie is significantly older than Roger as well as not having the same level of energy as him. The latter’s behavior and naïveté make him come across as younger or immature, which makes the term fitting. Now, “kid” is said in two different scenes—the part when Eddie and Maroon show Roger the pictures of Jessica and Marvin Acme playing patty-cake and the moment when Eddie manages to save Roger from falling into a barrel of DIP. In the first scene, the private detective calls the Toon “kid” in a way that suggests sarcasm, bluntness, and exaggeration. It shows how Eddie views Roger as a kid (because of his aforementioned naïveté) as well as his way of saying, “Wake up, you’re being ridiculous.” The evidence is undeniable from Eddie’s perspective, and he’s in no mood to sugarcoat anything. In the second scene, Eddie calling Roger “kid” reveals how he’s actively trying to keep him safe from Judge Doom and the Toon Patrol. This time, it suggests not just exasperation but also protection. Even if he’s reluctant to admit it, Eddie has become more concerned for Roger’s safety since he keeps getting himself into trouble. He may have been annoyed by toon rabbit’s antics. However, this change of context reinforces the dynamic between the two: an experienced world-weary adult/figure and an idealistic and naïve adult/individual.

So, in summary, the way Roger acts influences how other people address him. Whatever he’s referred to as depends on the situation he’s in, not his age.

I rewatched Who Framed Roger Rabbit last night and it made me wonder... How young is Roger? The human characters keep addressing him as "son", "boy", or "kid".

Late 20s early 30s, maybe? The weasels I assume are at least in their 40s and Baby Herman claims to be mentally 50...
