Cottonwood trees in fall golden foliage at Phantom Ranch in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona in December. Set at the bottom of the Grand Canyon on the north side of the Colorado River, this 1920s lodge can only be reached by mule, foot or raft. Rustic private cabins and dorms are heated in winter and cooled in summer. The 4 single-sex dorms have bunk beds and shared bathrooms with showers. Cabins have cold-water sinks and toilets; showers are provided at a central location. Bedding and towels are provided. A canteen serves breakfast, packed lunches and dinner for a fee. Meals must be reserved in advance. From the South Kaibab Trail, the view is looking down on the "Red & White" switchbacks descending through the redwall formation on a nice December afternoon in Grand Canyon National Park. The bottom of these switchbacks mark the half-way point between the South Rim and the Colorado River. The drop seen in the photo is around 400 feet (120 m.) Sunset view!!!! Malibu has trails that weave through canyons, amazing views, waterfalls and grasslands. LOVE the Santa Monica Mountains. To get to the trailhead: Take PCH to Winding Way in Malibu. Winding Way is a minor street, 4.5 miles west of Malibu Canyon Road (by Pepperdine University) and 1.4 miles east of Kanan Dune Road on the north side of PCH. Turn up Winding Way and into a free parking lot for the trail on the left at the bottom of Winding Way. Overflow parking is along PCH. Point Mugu State Park, One of my FAVORITE places to camp off the PCH! This photo was taken in the morning. $25 a night, Firewood is $5 a bundle and you can get it from the camp ground host. -Seagulls will eat your food.. BEWARE! Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. - Check the tide report before you set up your tent... Don't want to wake up getting soaked.. There are a ton of great hikes close by in the Santa Monica Mountains, this park features five miles of ocean shoreline, with rocky bluffs, sandy beaches, sand dunes, rugged hills and uplands, two major river canyons and wide grassy valleys dotted with sycamores, oaks and a few native walnuts. There are more than 70 miles of hiking trails. The beach also features swimming, body surfing and surf fishing. Coast Trail runs along the beach and across the street is Asilomar Dunes Natural Preserve, where a landmark stile stands at the gateway to this preserve and the Asilomar Conference Grounds. A ¼ mile boardwalk meanders through 25 acres of restored sand dune ecosystem where visitors can discover the native plant greenhouse where more than 450,000 plants, representing 25 species, have been grown and planted in the effort to preserve the dunes and coastal bluffs. Several boardwalk outlooks provide panoramic views of Asilomar State Beach and the blue Pacific Ocean. -Asilomar State Beach is within the boundary of the Asilomar Marine Reserve. All marine resources, animals and features (including shells and rocks) are protected.
