These are dancers ready for the Tanabata matsuri (Star Festival). Note that their yukata all match and that they’re the traditional indigo blue on white.

I have been told that back when yukata were first created and only came in blue and white, indigo blue patterns on white cloth yukata were for daytime wear and that white patterns on indigo blue-colored cloth yukata were for the evenings. Indigo is supposed to repel mosquitos so you would want more of it at night (when skeeters will bite the most) while white is thought to be a cool/refreshing color (to look at and also to wear).

Beer obidome (obi brooch) and edamame (a kind of freshly picked soybean) earrings. Cute!

Beer and edamame is traditional izakaya (pub/bar) fare in Japan, you lightly salt the gently steamed edamame and munch on them while drinking (easier on the stomach processing the alcohol if you have some food with the drink). 

Here in the USA we’d eat potato chips or pretzels or salted nuts with beer, but the idea is the same

Yukata season in Japan! Bet they’re on their way to a matsuri (festival)!

Finally this went on sale! 

It’s a vintage unused Mugetsu Amami Oshima silk dorozome (mud-dyed) kasuri black silk kimono shōru (shawl) from Shinei (Sou Japan’s predecessor website).

It was pricey but I paid nowhere near the 200,000 Yen ($1,883 USD) or even the 100,000 Yen ($942 USD) on the price tag in the photo (yikes!). It set me back about $250 USD. 

I think this shawl is probably a leftover from the go-go 1980s or very early 1990s (before the Japanese economic boom seriously collapsed) which is why the price tag of the shawl seems so crazy high.

It’s very Victorian (Meiji-era) looking, but I plan on wearing and using it with more than kimono (i.e. yofuku or Western style clothes)
