I like a LOT of what rottmnt introduced but I also felt that the show was overly messy and disorganized. I enjoyed it on a moment to moment basis but I never got truly invested in the characters, which is crazy since I'm a life long tmnt fan. I was really on board with all the changes, even the big ones, and think a lot of them were great choices.

Casey being a recruit? Wonderful! Magic weapons for the turtles? Great idea! Mystical stuff taking a front and center position in the story? Hell yeah, give it to me please! I was so ready for the changes and saw the potential of a younger, less experiences turtle team right from the first episode. I love the look of the show, I liked the brighter colors, I liked the kooky designs and ideas.

But to me the lack of stakes, the quickness of the episodes and the over reliance on jokes is what ended up losing me. The entire first season I kept waiting for these characters to become more than what they were introduced as.

I held onto this idea that this show was really going to go places right up until the season 1 finale. Until I literally couldn't have any hope for it anymore because the show refused to let the characters really grow and change. Having them all revert back to "let's just throw shit at the wall and have a deus ex machina fix our problems as always" at the literal finale of the season made me lose interest so quickly. I wanted just one moment of genuine growth and change but nope. Sorry, this is a comedy show and thus it can never not be funny and jokey and every single thing has to be a punchline. Even the defeat of the big bad.

Maybe that worked for others, but to me it felt like a cop out. Why should I be invested in these guys and their problems and growth when the world will just bend to their whims and let their problems be solved without any real effort or thought from them? Nevermind that the stupid action figure would have been seen by everyone and never would have worked so even their deus ex machina was a major cop out, even for a deus ex. It just tanked my enjoyment and I couldn't find it in myself to excuse it.

I acknowledge s2 tried to fix it somewhat but it was too late by then. They had a whole season to give us something deeper and they fumbled it. I've loved and still do love kids shows because often there's still depth in the comedy, still character in the clowns. But rottmnt feels shallow and empty with characters that are often one note or only as deep as the moment needs them to be before turning them into caricatures again for the sake a joke. I'm sad about it because I so desperately wanted to love it but I just couldn't.

The movie, on the other hand, is amazing and makes me so sad that we never got this amount of care in the actual show. If the show had had even a fraction of the stakes or drama or character arcs that the movie had then I genuinely think we could have had another amazing tmnt show.

Very tempted to make a podcast about all the many problems with Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. There's just so much wrong with RotTMNT. It certainly has its merits, but they are few and far between, and there are just more weaknesses than strengths. For every good quality, there are several dozen flaws.

Don't get me wrong, there have definitely been other controversial, puzzling, hotly debated, or downright reviled TMNT adaptations, but none reach the odd illustrious infamy of RotTMNT with how much of a disaster it is, one that had the potential to tank the entire franchise, and yet despite that has still garnered a very dedicated, vocal cult following. And don't even get me started on how the RotTMNT fandom is doing all the heavy lifting because fans are practically making feasts out of table scraps here.

It's such a fascinating mess of mediocre to abysmal storytelling that often seems to be insulting its audience's intelligence (yes indeedy, RotTMNT is usually too big dumb and trifling even for 7-year-olds). Despite being a part of a highly merchandisable franchise, one that thrives on toy sales, it consists of typically off-model, highly unmarketable, non-commercially viable designs. It's a miraculous specimen of epic, obnoxious, sensory overloading proportions that needs to be studied in a lab. That lab, of course, being a podcast or something.
