Cénotaphe à Newton
Architect: Étienne-Louis Boullée / Date: 1748
Boullée promoted the idea of making architecture expressive of its purpose, a doctrine that his detractors termed architecture parlante (“talking architecture”), which was an essential element in Beaux-Arts architectural training in the later 19th century. His style was most notably exemplified in his proposal for a cenotaph for the English scientist Isaac Newton, which would have taken the form of a sphere 150 m (490 ft) high embedded in a circular base topped with cypress trees. Though the structure was never built, its design was engraved and circulated widely in professional circles. Boullee’s Cenotaph for Issac Newton is a funerary monument celebrating a figure interred elsewhere; the hollow sphere foreshadows the death of Newtonian Physics. The Newton cenotaph, designed in 1748, for all its apparent originality, it actually derives from contemporary archaeology. The small sarcophagus for Newton is placed at the lower pole of the sphere. The design of the memorial creates the effect of day and night. The effect by night, when the sarcophagus is illuminated by the starlight coming through the holes in the vaulting. The effect by day is an armillary sphere hanging in the center that gives off a mysterious glow. For Boullée symmetry and variety were the golden rules of architecture.

Szabó T. Anna: A mai nap (részlet)
1. Képzeld, mi történt. Kora délelőtt, amint utaztam új lakást keresni, és azon tűnődtem, hogyan tovább, míg üres szemmel bámultam a boltok januári, kopott kirakatát, és annyi minden eszembe jutott –
hirtelen tényleg csak a semmit láttam: a házak közül épp kirobogott a villamos, a hídra ráfutott, s a megszokott szép tágasság helyett köd várt a láthatatlan víz felett – döbbenten álltam.
És most úgy érzem, megtörténhet bármi.

lyrics - Nirvana: Dumb
Kurt Cobain answered some questions about “Dumb” in an August 21, 1993 interview with Melody Maker:
MM: The lyric for “Dumb” seems peculiarly direct, a song about life’s simple, silly little pleasures. Like “I think I’m dumb/Or maybe just happy.” Is it intended to reflect that new-found optimism you’ve mentioned, or should we be reading it ironically?
KC: That’s just about people who’re easily amused, people who not only aren’t capable of progressing their intelligence but are totally happy watching 10 hours of television and really enjoy it. I’ve met a lot of dumb people. They have a shitty job, they may be totally lonely, they don’t have a girlfriend, they don’t have much of a social life, and yet, for some reason, they’re happy.
MM: Are you ever envious of them?
KC: At times. I wish I could take a pill that would allow me to be amused by television and just enjoy the simple things instead of being so judgmental and expecting real good quality instead of shit. And just using the word “Happy” I thought was a nice twist on the negative stuff we’ve done before.
MM: So this has a negative tone, too, you’ve just hidden it?
KC: Yeah (laughs)
